Sorry to hear.
I've heard that Nova doesn't play well with it. Thankfully I don't like Nova, and the Pixel launcher I'm using is causing me zero issues but it's not good that others don't work as they should.

Re notifications. Not sure what you mean. It's an Android device, so my notifications are as they are on any other Android I've owned?

At least you gave it a shot though! :)

Pixel Launcher crashed right off the bat for me.

Maybe I should just stop buying Android phones and stick with the iPhone. It never sticks.

I've just picked up a P20 and think it is awesome. I really do think this could be a keeper.

I much prefer a fingerprint scanner on the front, the fact the navigation keys are located within it is perfect.

Yes EMUI has some quirks and the aggressive app management won't be to some people's liking but for me it's ok.

I have Nova installed and couldn't have an android phone without it, the gestures are what make it a treat to use. With a bit of research I have found out some of the issues that can arise and how to negate them. For one, don't use the stock widgets with Nova otherwise it will require uninstalling and reinstalling to get working again.

When I compared the regular and pro versions I much preferred the size and screen of the former. I personally think for an LCD panel it is pretty decent.

I've just got a P20 Pro that is replacing my S8+.

First impressions are:

  • It's fast. Really fast. No lag or stutter
  • It looks really nice. I got the blue version which is my first non-black phone in years and I'm really pleased with my choice
  • The camera is amazing
  • Battery life, so far, has been excellent
  • Its nice to have the fingerprint sensor on the front again and face unlock is excellent
  • I've hidden the navi keys and simply use the gestures on the finger print sensor, which again works brilliantly
  • Bit disappointed that my S8+ has a later security patch than the P20 Pro, but I guess it's coming

Like others I have installed Nova and restored my previous Nova backup, but otherwise I set the device up as a fresh device.

Two questions:
  1. On the lock screen, how can I see the content of a notification without unlocking? I have it set to show content
  2. On the lock screen how do I swipe away a notification without unlocking? E.G. I have a ring doorbell, when I go outside I get a notification of movement but its me, so I just want to swipe it away but can't. Is it possible?

@Aneres11

On your P20, if you push slightly firmer than usual on the bottom third of your screen do you hear a clicking?

I do, I know you don't normally press that hard but it's really annoying me.

This is the first phone that’s got me excited in awhile. I don’t know why but I’m anxious to switch from my 8plus.

Ha yeah a very slight click. Well, more of a crackle than a click.
Like you say I don't ever push that hard so it won't be an issue for me but annoying for you if you do.

I'm going to force myself not to push that hard for no reason just to hear it click .

I can't really understand why I pressed so hard to find the click in the 1st place. Oh well, at least it seems its something in the design and not just my phone.

Some P20 / P20 Pro camera comparisons.
Wanted to see if there was much of a difference with the cameras outside of the zoom. From my experience so far, it seems like there's not much between them at all, with the regular P20 often taking the better looking picture.

What do you think:

For all of the talk about the triple camera, for me it seems like there's not much between them.

If I'm honest, it's the AI that tends to make the photos out to be different more often than not. I think all of these have AI off, as it was overcast and it was making the images look like there was bright sunshine due to how it was boosting the greenery. Sometimes it works, often it doesn't.

As I've said before, outside of the zoom features of the Pro, there's very very little between these cameras and for the nicer feel in hand phone, the P20 is still a fantastic choice and not to be overlooked.

Been seeing so many issues with The p20 in the xda forums. Such as lag , no HD Streaming Bluetooth issues etc. Has anyone had any problems. It’s launching this week in Canada and I really want to give it a shot but I’m starting to hesitate now.

Thanks

I think you're always going to find issues in forums like XDA. It's basically what those forums are for. No one is going to start a thread about the wonderful Bluetooth performance on their P20 but they will immediately create one if it's causing an issue.

FWIW I have had zero issues with my P20 other than a Zooper Pro widget disappearing from my home screen randomly on a number of occasions.

I have experienced zero lag and Bluetooth is working as well as it does on any other phone I've used.

Sold my P20 Pro yesterday.

- Android Auto not working
- camera: saturated colors even without AI.

where the main reasons.

Went for the Galaxy S9 Duo now and everything works as supposed to.

Yeah apparently Android Auto doesn't play nice. Sorry it didn't work out for you.
I agree with the AI still being aggressive even when turned off. It's a little jarring at times.

As a point and shoot camera you will not get good results all the time with either P20's. S9, X and Pixel 2 are kings for that.

Glad you're satisfied with the S9. :)

Looks like the Pro pics are just a little better to me.

But really Huawei has nailed it in smartphone cameras!

My bro picked up P20 Pro today. I should be checking it out (& helping him transfer data from his old Windows phone) next week...

Any issues transferring old phone data to the P20 Pro? Best way to go about it?

Carphonewarehouse have a bank holiday sale here in the UK with the regular P20 being reduced by £100.

That means it is £499 new in either blue or black. Crazy good deal if you ask me. Comparing it to other flagships like S9 and iPhone X etc, it's fantastic value as it's just as capable as those with a better camera IMO.

Setup from a Windows phone was a chore, but the P20 Pro is a slick device for sure, & the form factor (so long as it's bezel-less) is ideal. Any bigger than a 6.1" screen would be too much for me.

I have had my P20 / Pro since launch date now (so 2 months almost) so I feel like I am able to give a bit of a better impression than when I first got hold of them.

Long story short, I love these phones. I ended up selling my Pro to go for the regular P20 which I much prefer the size of.
Both phones are virtually the same from my experience outside of the size. Even though the specs sheet would have you think they were worlds apart, in reality they really are not.

The screen is better on the Pro due to the OLED panel, and it gets much brighter than the P20 screen. But in turn the P20 gets much lower in brightness which helps me of a nighttime.

Battery life is only slightly better on the Pro but both have great battery life. It's becoming a real bonus in most Android phones these days is battery life. Probably due to the chipsets being used now and Oreo perhaps. But good times!

The camera on these phones is where they shine. But as I have said before, for point and shoot these phones are not the best. The Pixel 2, S9 and iPhone X are all better for that than these are. But the P20's have a plethora of options which can allow you to take better photos overall. And that's really important.

Sometimes, the P20's do some very very strange things and the sharpening goes crazy. To the point where photos are ruined.
What I don't understand, is that when it does oversharpen, it isn't due to any AI that I can see. I've tried disabling Master AI and it does the same. Unfortunately, even when turned off it can sometimes so a bit too much.
Here's an example.

tsOIPkt.jpg

I mean, what's going on with my dogs face here? It's like I've used some cartoon filter.
It happens randomly and can be quite frustrating.

I've added a Pixel launcher onto my phone and had zero problems until I added a widget. I added a Zooper Pro date / time widget which for whaterver reason, disappears off my homescreen every morning when I pick my phone up.
It's there when I plug my phone in at bed time, but it's gone when I take it off charge in the morning.
Every. Single. Day.

Give me strength!

Another annoyance is the night light / blue light filter. It's almost pointless. I turn it on (it's set to max) and it looks less yellow than my iPad screen naturally looks! And that's without the iPad having night mode on.
It's one of the worst I've used on a phone and I generally rely on night mode with my screens. This was the same on both the reg P20 and Pro.

I've only had one update so far in the time I've had the phone. It fixed an Instagram video bug which was happening which I was grateful for, but seemed like updates are on the slow side.

No always on display on the P20 is a bummer. Sometimes it's good to just see the time. The Pro had the option due to the OLED, but third party notifications have apparently never been supported with Huawei's AOD.

Other quirks - my AirPods connected really well to my P20, but once connected the volume would randomly max out as soon as connection was established. Nearly burst my ear drums twice pressing play on a song and not realising it did that...

All in all I really like the phone. I'm beginning to get that familiar itch again now for something else and I don't really know why. I have been eyeing up the XZ2 with it's £100 price drop here but I'm not sure why I've suddenly vested an interest in it when I was really put off it on launch.
The BB KEYtwo is right round the corner too, which I know I will definitely be getting, but who knows when it will actually launch after the announcement. The KEYone took ages after the unveil, but BB in the past have announced phones and they've been available the same day.

Ahh the life of a phone junkie.

But yeah, the P20 is an amazing phone with an amazing camera (most of the time), and can now be had for a pretty remarkable price. (£499).
I would recommend it to anyone, but am now on the hunt for something else despite being satisfied haha.

Can't believe that photo! It really is as if a filter's been enabled. Is there a filter within the camera App that's meant to have that effect on photos?? Maybe it switches itself on without the user knowing?
