Just claimed my free Bose headphones for pre-ordering the P20 Pro.
Apparently, they're worth over £300 so I'm pretty pleased I'm getting them for free.
I'll be selling them on eBay straight away as I have no need for them so can recoup some money there!

Thanks for your contribution.
A P20 would ruin your list of devices in your signature though so it's prob a good idea to pass...
Not sure how it would ruin a Macbook - still astonished why
Seriously?!

THE ONLY reason their "evil" is because the United States of America's Trillion dollar debt is OWNED by Chinese! Plain and simple. No substantial evidential proof of all the fears or claims that Huawei is doing anything more than that the FBI, CIA, etc in the USA are already and HAVE been doing for almost a decade through AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile USA, etc etc with all of their citizens. Do you know anything about Snowden and what he actually brought to the entire worlds attention??!?! Really?

Of all the global players for creating, building, upgrading mobile networks how many are USA company's and strong enough on a global scale to compete? Motorola? LMAO ...

Huawei,
Ericsson - used to be THE emininent top player until the last 2yrs when upgrades where held off by so many global players and Huawei was eating their lunch with better details (cost effective) and up to date equipment delivered faster.
Nokia Siemens,
Motorola

In the USA alone I'm only are of Motorola that will benefit from the Trump administrations fear of any technology advances from China. This simply is the "America first" plan ... it's all about the money my friend.

Always remember ...

"HE who has the gold, makes the rules" in your land.
Umm you forgot Facebook and Google, especially the latter that has made android the dominant mobile OS. Anyway Apple is the only company that makes any serious effort at protecting the privacy of its users.

Nice phone though, strange I didn't read any whines about the lack of a headphone jack.

Zuckerberg was an iOS fan and user up until the Obama administration ended. He’s fully android now. ;) plenty of pictures online him using iOS.

My post had nothing to do with Facebook nor google itself but other matters.

@Aneres11 just curious your thoughts after using the p20 pro now for awhile?

A few specific questions: How’s the battery life and how’s the fluidity compared to iPhone X and Pixel 2?

Hey, sure. :)

Thoughts are extremely positive. Pretty much like everything about the phone. The battery life is stellar, easily gets through the day and never has to be charged before bed fine, which is all I look for in a phone really. Phone never gets warm, I’ve never experienced heat coming off it which is a welcome change compared to some previous devices...! :p

Fluidity is an interesting one. Day to day I would say it’s extremely fast and fluid. I don’t have any problems or issues with how the phone performs / runs with lots of apps open or even just one app open. I actually think it is more fluid than the S9 I recently tried which I did find ever so slightly laggy. Until I put the Pixel launcher on the S9 and that stopped.

The only app that there is a noticeable lag on, is Google Photos. Swiping between photos and there’s a visible stutter. It’s odd, as Huawei’s own gallery app doesn’t have that issue. I’ve mentioned the lag on other forums but had the usual “My device is perfect yours is defective” response..
It is completely useable but just noticeable and the only app I see it in. But I’m fine with it.

Everywhere else the phone flies round. I couldn’t really ask for more from it in terms of performance.

The camera hasn’t been properly tested - I’ve done a few shots which I’ve uploaded but the camera is obviously amazing. And the biggest selling point to me. It is sometimes tricky to know which mode you should shoot in, outside of the obvious night mode for low light shots etc, as sometimes the AI does too much. It’s usually better to knock it off which is easily done by hitting settings and disabling Master AI.
For everyday point and shoot, it’s great but I still think the Pixel 2 and even S9 might be better choices for that. I’d maybe throw the X in that mix but I honestly think the iPhone camera is just not up to par in anything other than bright daylight.

For full on variety of shots and incredible low light / zoom, the P20 is untouchable.

I’ve added a Pixel skin to my P20 Pro and it looks great. Disabled / removed what I can from Huawei’s own app offerings and it’s now much more to my tastes as an everyday phone. Bluetooth connectivity strangely seems better on this than any other Android I’ve had, with my AirPods connecting to it almost as quickly as they do to an iPhone.. It’s insane.

All in all I’m majorly impressed. Whenever I’ve picked up a Huawei phone before I’ve never been inclined to want to use it as my daily. Or even as a secondary. This is my first Huawei phone. And it’s left an amazing impression. I’d recommend it to anyone who is happy tinkering with the camera to get the best shots. As when used correctly the results are unbelievable.
It also looks gorgeous. I am not really into my black model, but the blue and twilight colours, as we all know are sublime. Same with the pink / gold regular P20. I’d rock that pearl goodness no problem haha. They nailed the design.

I’m rambling now but I keep thinking of good things haha. Can’t emphasise enough how much I love that front FPS. Whilst I prefer the look of the Mate 10 Pro chin with the logo on, I love having that FPS. Purely because it’s (this feels weird saying) nostalgic, lol and throws it back to that good old front FPS time ha. And because it allows the removal of the on screen nav buttons which just gives you so much more screen. Very immersive. A lot of people are so used to the on screen nav that they keep them on but for me this has made me question them entirely. I’m ready for gesture based goodness now I’ve used this!

But yeah all in all, super impressed and really happy with it. Originally I said it couldn’t replace my iPhone X, but I think it could. I’m not going to do that, as the X is the closest phone to perfection for me compared to everything else (at the moment), but this P20 Pro has really won me over with its unique ways and different take on Android, which I actually find refreshing - and not bothersome.

Yeah, this makes a second Chinese company the US is going after. And I'm sure it will end just as well as the first. :/
Maybe they have more intel than you or i do.......
Or maybe they just made they whole thing for no reason at all /s

Maybe they do. I can only look from the outside and see the tariffs followed by nonsensical sanctions and come to a conclusion.

I'm sure there is a bigger picture here. I think historically the overseas tariffs have not been in the US favor.
It's all politics....

Absolutely not.

In my short time with it, I much prefer my iPhone X.

As a second device though, it's really good for me.

Some more thoughts.

Today I have been looking after my friends dog as he's been working a long shift all day and his GF is at a friends who she went to uni with or something.

Anyway, seemed like a good opportunity to test the camera.
It's good day to day. But it could be better.
As some reviewers have said in their vid / site reviews, the AI is really annoying. Whilst it's this magical AI that gives the fantastic quality to low light shots, it's extremely frustrating and not particularly accurate the majority of the time.

For instance, it kept thinking that the dog was a cat. There's both a cat and dog AI option (no idea what they do differently), but the dog we were looking after is not cat like in the slightest lol, so that was odd. :D

I also encountered similar issues when snapping some leaves just up the road when taking her for a walk. It applied a 'food filter'. There was no food in site. Very frustrating. It also sometimes tries to make your photo a portrait style photo, despite not being in the portrait mode within the camera.
Why would it do that?!

When it comes to actually pointing and shooting a photo, the P20 Pro falls way behind the X, the S9 and the Pixel 2.

Its results though, do often come out pretty great when the AI isn't driving you insane. Or, when it gets it right.

Tired lol.

The leaf pics are not the most interesting, but the detail is pretty great.

I discovered an always on display tucked away in the settings.
It isn't as good as that found in the Pixel 2 or S9 though. There doesn't seem to be any notification of apps outside of Huawei's own like phone, messages etc.

eAhO7Pu.jpg

Still, it's good that I can see the time at the very least but this could definitely be better.

One thing that I absolutely HATE and do not understand, is this weird screen issue which appears to be a 'Huawei thing'.

When I set the phone up and it was all ready yesterday, I noticed that when I went into some apps, the brightness would flick down. I just rolled my eyes and thought, must turn auto brightness off! I never have auto on with my phones. I hate the screen changing depending on where I am, I always tend to keep it pretty bright and just knock it down or up manually as I see fit.

So I went in and turned it off. Then noticed it was still doing it. So I checked some more settings, seen I had this 'natural tone' turned on which I thought might do it. So turned that off. Still doing it.
So I googled it, expecting to find nothing but there was loads of returns. Apparently this has been going on since the P9 and EMUI 5.
Someone said to go into developer options and turn off something to do with sun levels and the screen. Then to restart the phone.
So I did that. Rebooted. Still doing it.

As far as I've read, Huawei acknowledged it was an error in EMUI 5, but this is still happening. It is infuriating.
Truly don't understand why it is doing it. The actual brightness level doesn't seem to change when it does it - even when I go out of the app and back to the home screen when it flicks back up. So it doesn't seem like it's display setting related.

Moving on, I've struggled a bit with the stock launcher. After trying to get the Pixel launcher on, which took some time, I finally managed it this afternoon.
Feels much better now and the app draw finally looks clean again haha.

B92qmjD.jpg

I had read that battery life was really good on the phone, and I can confirm it has been absolutely fantastic. I do not know how they've done it, but this is one of the best (if not the best) phones for battery life I have ever used.
Can't fault that at all.

Still gutted I didn't get a case in the box, but I'll get over it.

Will post more thoughts next week after a bit more time with it, but I do like the phone. It's obvious that the zoom and the low light camera are where it shines, although it does do a decent job when the AI gets it right with everyday snaps too.
Nice photos & comparison with the iPhone X. It's just too tall for me. If the bottom bezel was cut off, then I think it would be the largest form factor I could tolerate.

For now, like you, the iPhone X is my preferred, all-round smart phone.

Yeah I know what you mean. The regular P20 is godly in terms of size and feel. I do wish that it had the triple camera of the Pro in it too as I’d be all over that if it did.

I still love the Pro and would happily use it as my daily. But the X is honestly one of my favourite phones. I could go on all day about all the things I like about it, but it’s the P20 thread so I won’t haha.

Hopefully taking the P20 to the beach tomorrow for the dogs birthday party. (Yes, really...!) so will take some snaps and give it a proper test with some challenging conditions.

Okay. Still feels weird to have an Android phone that starts off with no app drawer. Kind of feels comfortable coming from an iPhone, though.

I think thats the idea. You can tell that Huawei have tried to borrow a lot of things from iOS for a while.
For Android though, it just doesn't work.

______

In other Huawei news, I've just ordered a regular P20.
I am really keen to test both of these cameras out (normal P20 and Pro) as a lot of reviews I've read have said that there's not much between them. Well, some say that and I've seen it on YouTube videos, but then others say it can't compete, so who knows!
Also, it's night mode that blows me away the most and that's all present and correct in the regular P20 too.

The only trade off over the Pro is the zoom. Which I may miss. But I wont know unless I give this a try. However, the gains from the regular P20 for me will be the smaller, more preferred size, still a great camera, it will be blue and not black (yay) and it'll be unlocked unlike this current Pro.

I'll be sure to post when I've got it and spent some time with it. :)

5x Optical Zoom is it (Pro)? That's amazing.

I don’t think it’s optical. It is at 3x. But 5x it does some magic to give you a zoomed in function that loses some quality but retains so much more detail than any other phone that zooms in at that level.
It’s pretty remarkable.

Ok thanks. 3x optical, then 2x digital. Still, 3x is great progression & with a camera that doesn't protrude as much as the iPhone X (so it seems?).

I think it protrudes ever so slightly more than the X. Looking at them both side by side, the X juts out but is totally flat. The P20 Pro is flat but then has further raised areas so does stick out more. Both wobble without a case on a flat surface, which is extremely annoying. But I can forgive the P20 as it shoots fantastic photos. The X, not so much all the time :p , but video is top notch!

P20 not arrived yet.
But managed to get out with my Pro to my dogs beach birthday party. He's 4 today!
My sister organised a beach part for all his friends haha, it was a good opportunity to test the camera.
