I can definitely replicate this issue, and I must add that it took me few tries to finally notice and see the change happening. I just got my ipad 4 a week ago.

I have the same problem on my brand new iPad 4 128GB, very noticeable when watching videos on Plex - but it seems to me this super annoying brightness shifting is present in any video playback. :(

I truly hope this is some software issue, not screen defect...

WilliamG would be the one to consult about that but I'm pretty sure their response is "we're looking into it.." With no update

I wouldn't waste time trying to get Apple to fix this issue. It will be fixed with the ipad 5.The 4 is going to be replaced soon so why would they waste time and resources seeing that only a handful of people complain about it.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 1 had a more severe display issue and it was never resolved. The fault was gone in the Note 2.

I have seen this thread for months and didn't bother reading it because I figured it was BS.

I Haven't read the whole thread as i'm sure if I did I would want to throw the iPad out the window :D. Just the same ol OCD crap.

I watch movies on the iPad exclusively for exactly the reasons you are saying this screen is flawed.

It's a software device to enhance video.

For example, the Sling player app (Slingbox) does this on the iPad. When you come out of the the player the screen is distorted as hell but pops back in a few seconds.

Now, I can't use the Sling Box on a regular computer as it's too dark. This is because it's a Web plug -in and so therefore it's not optimized for 'a specific device like the iPad, etc' . On the iPad it's perfect. Same goes for movies.

I really suggest you read the first post... The distortion of the icons is not the problem-actual. It's the byproduct of the problem.

Hard to say. Some people, absolutely. I'm certainly not the only one.

I've tested this on a few iPads myself and i agree with previous posts in that it seems that the problem exists slightly differently on every ipad. It's doesnt seem to be as bad on some iPads compared to others.

I can only speak from my experience which is that I was able to replicate the issue with the exact same severity on each iPad 4 I tested.

How did you get a refund just out of interest? Did you return yours within 14 days of purchase?

I just bought my iPad 4 yesterday at the Apple Store and read this thread just a minute ago. I was terrified I, too, had a lemon and checked my iPad on full brightness in a dark closet.

Used the Dark Knight trailer #4 on safari and THANK GOODNESS it's flawless.

Whew!

Edit:
When I look up my serial number online, it says it was made in week 9 of 2013, which is March. Must have gotten it really hot off the press.

Maybe they've fixed the issue?

Did you try pausing it at the very end of the trailer, when there's 1 second left of the video? Then paused on that frame full screen, making sure there's no bars at the top and bttom, leaving it for 3 seconds then returning it to the home screen?

I will try this when I have some time today and report back.

But how will I know there is one second left if its supposed to be on full screen with no visible tools?

You can have the controls on to see when theres 1 second left but then after you've paused the video at that point, take the controls off by tapping the screen. Then leave it for a few seconds and try going to the home screen.

Okay I did just as you said and found no flaw at all. No brightness shifts in any of the dark scenes, and I paused it with 1 second left, waited 3 seconds, no bars in top visible, no tools visible, in full screen mode, then hit the home button.

Just my normal home screen.

Given that mine was manufactured in March 2013, I suspect they quietly fixed the problem.

Wow, it looks like yours doesn't have the problem then. I might try changing mine and see what I get.
