If Hans solo's doesn't have the issue, then it's hardware?

Ok so I tried example 4 and twice there IS a very slight weird brightness amplification. So I guess mine isn't immune after all. It's very slight though, and no weird home screen icons thing.

Regardless, I'm pretty anal retentive about screen quality. It's probably a good thing I don't use Apple apps to watch videos. I'm jailbroken and use Rush Player + since it plays everything and uses hardware acceleration.

But yeah, I'd be pissed if I used nothing but Apple's videos app!

If you watch a long movie, it can get annoying after a while especially if its relatively dark because it keeps getting brighter and darker.

Yeah, I can definitely see that being annoying. Is it confirmed that it only happens on apple apps?

I think it happens on some other apps as well. Various people have reported finding this problem on different apps throughout this thread.

Ok. I'm downloading the same example video I used so I can test it with Rushplayer+.

Like I said, I'm pretty anal about screen quality; if I get the same results on Rushplayer+, this iPad is going back!

Regardless, I'm glad I read this thread so soon after purchasing.

Ok wow. That is incredibly annoying, playing it on Apple's video app! I feel like I would get a migraine watching a whole movie like that!

Thankfully Rushplayer+ has no problem whatsoever, so if you are jailbroken, I would definitely recommend getting this free Cydia app. Not only does it not have this incredibly irritating problem, but it also has smoother playback.

However, I've noticed that during videos where there are dark scenes, the iPad 4 contrast is constantly "pumping" itself up, and then dimming back down. It's unbelievably distracting. Even stranger, if the contrast pumps itself up and at that point you close the app/Safari, the entire home screen looks completely over-saturated until it, too, gradually brings its contrast level back down.

My 27" iMac also 'blinks' at times... It's faster, but is like it is constantly over reacting to the ambient light in the room, and constantly over and under correcting... It's not annoying, just odd...

The annoying part even for JB'ers is if you watch a YouTube video (say while browsing reddit on safari or alien blue.. as there are lots of redditors out there myself included), it triggers the dynamic contrast issue. Having to respring every time it comes up is ANNOYING

Not to mention you lose battery usage stats in the process of respringing if you're trying to monitor that.

If it is a software issue that gets ironed out in iOS 7 you'll wait for next wave of JB and by then, of course newer faster and likely lighter/thinner hardware that can also be JB'en will be out. Worst case scenario, that happens inevitably except they skip fixing it on the ipad 4 since its an in between model (ipad 3 you could argue was an in between model too since they stopped selling them new after 7 months and have slower internals... Luckily it doesn't have the issue)

Not to be a bummer but I think about these things.

All this uncertainty and my 3 having no IR or yellowing and much better detail in dark scenes is why I returned to it (and lost some money in the process, but I've come to appreciate my near perfect ipad 3 screen even more. The glass on my ipad 4 had a bit of a creepy flex to it as well and I didn't want to find out if it was gonna crack over time or what)

Turn the ambient light sensor off, then? My 2012 iMac doesn't do that...

Have you tried ProTube HD from Cydia? Maybe that would help?

Just looking at Apples history of problems you can see that display problems have been a repeated problem for them.

1st generation iPod Touch "inverted blacks"
the current retina Macbook Pro with image retention issues
Powerbook G4 defects (inconsistant back lighting)
iPad 2 back light bleeding
iPad 3 inconsistent colors
2008 Macbook Pro screen defects
2007 iMac gradient display issues

If Apple wasn't so easy to deal with I wonder if the company would have as good of a rep as they do because apparently around 2007 they decided to fire their quality control team.

I remember the inverted blacks except on 1G iPhone.

It was soooo annoying.

I returned it to Best Buy. Since I'm a reward zone member I had 60-days to return :D

But I sent it back after a little over a week

That blows. I am a reward zone member too and I've been blacklisted from returning anything for the next 3 months because I returned a monitor a few times!
