The small screen will get some getting used to for those coming from plus models, but trust me when I say it's worth it. One handed use is second to none and when talking on the phone it doesn't look like you are holding a brick.

I agree, one handed use has been forgotten. So many times I've had to use two hands to do a simple task or I would just skip doing the task because it turned into more steps.

From Apple.com:

If you sell or give away your Apple device, you can also transfer the ownership of your AppleCare Protection Plan or AppleCare+ in regions that allow it. You can also transfer your AppleCare coverage plan between your own devices that are the same type of product and within 30 days of your original device purchase.

Am I reading this wrong? I probably am, I only had one cup of coffee today. Lol. Either way, I do like the peace of mind I get from carrying AppleCare.

Hmm.. I'm not sure now, but the way I read it is: within the first 30 days after purchase you can transfer it to a device of the same type. I'm not sure what qualifies as "same type", but in any case sounds like the 30 day limit would stop a you from transferring it in 2018. I wouldn't mind some clarification on this, though :)

In any case, AC+ is not a bad thing to have.
[doublepost=1505765040][/doublepost]
If you get rid of a phone with AC+, you can call AC and get refunded the remaining value.

Oh interesting, thanks, did not know that.

Iphone 7 user here. Thought about the situation.

iPhone 8 is not worth the money spent on changing from 8.

iPhone X is an overpriced beta phone. I can wait.

Saved my money this year. Will be happy with 7 until next year. We will see what happens. Most important of all, I don't feel or see the need to upgrade every year anymore.

How is everyone planing on updating their SE to IOS11? Upgrade via the OTA or starting from scratch as a new phone?

I got a shipment notice this afternoon, so won't receive mine until after tomorrow I'm thinking. I'm sure it won't have iOS11 installed. I'm wondering if I'll set it up new or transfer my 7+ backup. I want to use it first as is to try performance and setup everything else from scratch.

Yeah I am thinking of just resetting my phone after downloading and installing the ios11 update. Make it exactly like a new phone.

I'm very happy to find this thread. I've read every post and find it interesting reading different perspectives. I too own an iPhone 7 Plus 256GB jet black version that is 4 months old. My previous phone was the iPhone 6 plus which I used for a couple of years. When I upgraded I was so happy to find the jet black model and thought I did the right thing to stay with the Plus models. It was hard to think of getting any other phone size and have all the bells and whistles too.

After watching the event last week I really thought I would buy the X even though it's only been 4 months with the 7+. A few of my co-workers are ready to cancel early their carrier contracts and I was pumped. We all thought the 8 model is such a tired design now. But I started thinking about the issues I have with a large phone and wondered how it would be to live with a smaller phone again. I bought the SE 128GB model in space gray and it should arrive this week.

After all these years I'm looking forward to holding and using a one handed phone again. Walking the dog, drinking coffee and more without using a second hand to touch an icon or type. To be able to slip it in my front pocket and take it with me in every season. You know how hard it is during summer with no pockets! The past year or so I've noticed my hands aching from holding and reading the plus models.

I signed up to just follow and write in this thread and looking forward to reading more around here after my experience. Not sure if I will sell the 7+ or keep it as a backup. I just can't believe I'm doing this and my friends and co-workers will be shocked too. I'm normally the guy who owns the latest tech but functionality use is more important to me. I'll use my iPad Pro 12.9" for everything else!

Haha it was this very summer that made me want the SE. i was wearing shorts, and its was a pain carrying my 6+ around in shorts pocket.

In the end i bought an 8+, because my job was willing to pay for it (so ofcourse go with the more expensive model). My plan is to buy a SE2 out of pocket, this Spring(heres hoping they release it), and use that during the warm season and use my 8+ during the cold season.

OTA update. Then after iMessage is synced, I might finally set up as new. I'm still using the same backup carried over from my 2007 iPhone.

Huh. So if I update via OTA, and then set up as new, all my current iMessage threads are saved? Guess I thought setting up as new destroyed all the current threads. Would be great if they were retained !

Every year for the past 5 years, whether I'm eligible for an upgrade or not, I buy the brand new iPhone. It's become kind of a personal Christmas-in-September for me. About 2 weeks before the new phones are unveiled, I jump over to an older phone so I can sell my current model. It was no different this year; I re-activated an old 5S and got my matte black 7 Plus boxed up and ready to sell. I love all of the hype beforehand, the Apple event, the pre-order, waiting on delivery, unboxing my new toy, and enjoying the "honeymoon phase" for the next two months. I live for this stuff.

Until this year. Everything was on pace to unfold like any other year. I followed along with the rumor mill and patiently awaited for the Apple event...but before I knew it, the event was over and I was left feeling completely underwhelmed. Of the lineup they announced, there is not one device that I'm yearning for.

Where should I begin? I guess I'll start with the price tag of the base model iPhone X: $1000. For that price, you can buy a MacBook! Maybe I could look past the price tag if it weren't for the ugly black notch at the top of the device, the lack of home button/Touch ID (which, in my opinion, is the most natural and efficient form of device security), and the lack of 128GB option. 64GB isn't enough for me, so I'd have to spend $1149 on 256GB. (Sidebar: this might be what aggravates me the most. It's a sales tactic that Apple has deployed for years: take away the middle-of-the-road storage option and force those buyers to either upgrade their storage or downgrade their storage. Most will choose to upgrade and spend the extra cash. Ironically, it hasn't really bothered me until this year - the year Apple priced their flagship phone at and above $1000.)

Having said all of the above, maybe I should just go for the iPhone 8 or 8 Plus. Well, not the 8 Plus...I really wanted to downsize this year. Okay - so the iPhone 8! What new features will I get?? A glass back...a faster chip...a slightly nicer screen...and wireless charging. Well, I'll get wireless charging if I want to spend the extra cash on a Qi charger. I won't get portrait mode since that's still only dedicated to the Plus model phones. And, lest we forget, in order for me to get the appropriate amount of storage, looks like I'll have to drop $849 on the 256GB model.

Although, I have kind of been enjoying the use of my old iPhone 5S. Speed aside, it's a great little phone (keyword: little). Man, if they offered this with an upgraded camera and some faster hardware, I might actually consider it. ***DING, DING, DING!*** The iPhone SE. I almost forgot about the iPhone SE. A souped up iPhone 5S! Feels great in the hand, fits right in my pocket, easy to handle, and...COMES IN 128GB?! Wait, am I about to go COMPLETELY rogue???

YUP. I went rogue. As of an hour ago, I ordered a 128GB Space Grey iPhone SE. It arrives tomorrow and I'm actually quite excited about it. While most of you may think that I took a major step back, I kind of feel the opposite. The iPhone SE feels like 'ol trusty. It's the last of what was a great breed of iPhone - the last sign of Steve Jobs. It's fast enough to compete with today's standards, it embodies the ergonomic form factor, it packs a 12MP camera, has Touch ID, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. As much as I didn't want to admit it, the annoyance of not being able to charge AND be plugged into a speaker or have wired headphones in posed an issue more than I had hoped. The iPhone SE will do exactly what I need it to do...and it'll do it for $449. I'm going back to the basics for a while and I'm hoping Apple will do the same.
Yeah it's a great little phone. I just purchase a new SE for $139 from best buy in 32gb size for my Autistic brother for his first phone. Great deal and great phone. Added it to my att plan. It's hard to type on compared to the larger phones. But it's so compact. Hehe

I’ve been thinking about tracking down an SE on Craigslist to see how I like it (currently using an iPhone 7, so I wanna make sure the smaller screen isn’t a dealbreaker).

Found a 64GB “like new” SE for $250 and I got them down to $200. Real close to pulling the trigger...

Just to be clear about one small thing: the iPhone SE doesn’t show contact photos in the Messages app, correct? On the larger phones, your contact’s photo is displayed on the left next to each message thread.

Sounds silly, but one of the reasons i want a smaller iPhone is because i will not check my phone that often, so i will have more time for important things.

The 4.7 and 5.5 screen sizes are just too comfortable for checking videos, pictures etc. I didn't have that need when i was rocking the 3gs till 5s.

OTA update doesn't erase anything. It just installs on top of existing iOS. To be more accurate, my plan is:
  1. iTunes backup
  2. OTA update
  3. allow iMessage to sync to iCloud (new feature in iOS 11)
  4. erase content and settings
  5. setup as new

@rui no onna Wow 2007, maybe time to start fresh this time. :)
I'd like to have select message history preserved so setup as new is pretty much only as a last resort until now.

Bit late to this thread, but totally agree with you OP. Really good post.

For me, it comes down to what do I value most in an iPhone. In no particular order - battery life, physical ease of use (device size), smoothness of software and a reasonable enough camera for everyday use.

The SE absolutely hits all of those points. Anything else, I literally don't care about.

It has fantastic battery life (better than the 6 and 7 from what I have experienced), is buttery smooth and the 12MP camera is more than sufficient for 99.9% of people. The best part of all - one handed usage and not "feeling" the bulk of a phone in your pocket.

Since the 6 came out I basically haven't been able to wear jeans and have a phone in my pocket. Going back to the SE just made life easier in a lot of practical ways.

Would love Apple to bring out an SE 2 - maybe a phone with the form factor of the iPhone 6, but a device size the same as the current SE. Would be challenging, but would buy it in a heartbeat.

I'm thinking this as well. In my case, I'm often sitting at home using my phone when I could be using one of many more appropriate devices that I have (iMac, 15" MBP, ChromeBook) and doing what I'm doing more effectively.
[doublepost=1505828627][/doublepost]One thing I've noticed is that I type faster with the smaller screens (at least when I have autocorrect). I was trying this out on my 5S vs my 6S. I typed much faster on my 5S, and slower on my 6S though a bit more accurate (less relying on autocorrect). I attribute this to finger travel distance. My technique in either case is to use the thumb from my left finger and index finger from my right finger, and I generally don't look at the keyboard but instead look at the content I'm typing (basically touch typing).

I noticed the speed difference when I first got my 6 (coming from a 4S), and thought it was just something I'd get used to, but years later I still haven't caught up to my smaller-screen speed. And this is with me not using the smaller screen for typing for years; I imagine once I'm using it daily I'll be even faster.

OTA update. Then after iMessage is synced, I might finally set up as new. I'm still using the same backup carried over from my 2007 iPhone.

The iMessages syncing feature is NOT coming in iOS 11.0. Maybe it'll arrive in 11.1. I just learned this reading the Ars Technica review ( https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017/09/ios-11-thoroughly-reviewed/13/ ). So you'll have to wait longer to do this.

I've also been carrying backups all the way from the original iPhone, though I bought mine in early 2008. I don't plan on doing a clean install unless I'm having major problems, though (and even then I'd be reluctant). I wouldn't want to lose data from apps that don't store their data in iCloud.

Thanks for the info. That kinda sucks. I guess Apple was just having issues with it. I don't recall it working on the beta.

I only have one app that I care about that doesn't store data in iCloud. However, it does allow a manual backup and restore to/from Dropbox. iMessages was the only hold out.

Ok did a fresh install of iOS11 on my SE. So far so good. Feel pretty snappy and I've already tested out some AR demos, measuring space in my office!

Fancy. Good to hear. I know 6S was the oldest model to do AR and nice to see that the SE can too. Of course, this is simple AR and doesn't require alot of hardware. I was doing this stuff with similar measuring tools with the iPad3 for work.

@PBz Can't wait for mine to arrive. Canada Post states today, so big day with a new phone and iOS11 for me.

Finished setting up my 128GB SE. I upgraded it to iOS 11 and then restored from my 6S backup.

The only issue I've noticed is that I occasionally get no service in my house, but it eventually gets signal again. That's actually not unusual where I live, and used to happen with other iPhones, I just don't recall it happening with the 6S. So this may end up being a downgrade in cellular connectivity (maybe because of lack of LTE Advanced, or maybe not as good of an antenna design?), but we'll have to see. My wife will be on the 6S soon, so we'll be able to compare. I use Wifi calling at my house, so I don't depend on cellular connectivity there anyway.

Other than that, it's very smooth, and I immediately appreciate the smaller size and one-handed usability. I have no complaints in performance so far. Even the 1st gen Touch ID is not a problem, it's just about as fast as I expect it.

Caseless feels really great and easy to reach everything. I threw on my wife's old Otterbox case that she used from her 5S, and it's still quite usable one-handed; I may just keep using that even though I originally thought I'd either go for a thinner case or go caseless.

Starting my usage of this phone in iOS 11 makes a some comparisons to the 6S (running 10.3.3) a little difficult, because I'm not sure if some of the differences are SE-specific, or iOS 11-specific. I still have a 5S running 10.3.3, so I could clarify some of that of course.
