So I have struck again. I had the S6 but found it being boring in an iOS like feel. So I went and picked up a Unlocked Nexus 6 a little while ago.

When I booted the phone up, it said I had an update to Android to 5.0.1 and when I put my sim card in, the update went away and now it says my system is up to date. I am currently on 5.0. I have tried to take the sim out and connect with wifi and see if it will push the update to my phone but that has not happened yet. Any input?

I guess it doesnt matter because as soon as I get home today I will be unlocking the bootloader, rooting, and installing Chroma ROM and then it will be on the latest.

So I installed CyanogenMod on it recently, and it's smoother than it used to be. Also, it's on 5.1.1 as opposed to 5.1. That first part seems weird to me, since I'd have assumed Stock Android would be the smoothest. >_>

yea you sound like you are on ATT, ATT is blocking OTA updates on the Nexus 6 for some godforsaken reason. They can be installed prior to inserting the sim, after a factory reset. They can also be sideloaded via ADB at any time. Or take the rom method as you said

Thanks! I thought it would still pick up the OTA since its an unlocked device but I guess once it recognized that it was an AT&T sim card I guess it stopped the update right then. SMH good ole AT&T for you. I will just keep it updated with installing the latest ROMs when they drop after a OTA.

It kind of irks me that Google is letting carriers take away one of the biggest benefits of the Nexus devices. :\

My wife and I have been on ATT a few years, mainly for their great network service in my area, and pretty good prices lately. But Jesus Christ they have become the worst NAZI like carrier, even far worse than Verizon, whom I used to think of as the most evil carrier, but man ATT has trum[ped them for being the worst.

Too bad T-Mobile has spotty service, as they are the most developer friendly, with unlocked bootloaders, and their phones can be rooted right away out of the box.

ATT stopped allowing unlocked bootloaders and no root back on the Galaxy Note 3, and have stuck with that firm stance ever since, two years later on every phone.

I just don't understand why can't carriers just be the pipeline they're supposed to be. They are just the network and data for my phone, that's all I need. I don't want their *****ty bloat apps, and crappy locked down attitude on my smartphone.

I agree, their saving grace for me is that fact that you can bring your own unlocked phone. That alone makes them better than verizon if you are an android user, from a 'let me do what i want with my phone' standpoint

I really doubt I will ever buy a phone from a carrier again, but if I do, it will be a tmobile phone (or sprint if the compatibility happens to be there) for use on ATT. Or maybe one day I will actually switch to tmobile service, we shall see. Wont tolerate locked bootloader or delayed updates due to carrier. Too many cooks in the kitchen

The Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus had the same problem.

I wonder if they (AT&T and Verizon) are using it as leverage to offer the N6 at a 'cheaper' rate.

Yeah, Google seems to have almost no willpower when it comes to carriers. :\

How do you deal with not having an iMessage equivalent? I mean, having a program that can message without it being Google Voice is nice.

I need to buy a skin. Not digging the bulk that cases add to this beast.

Which brand is better ? Slickwraps or Dbrands ?

I have the midnight Blue Nexus 6, and thinking the carbon black might look best ?

I have continued to just use regular texting, and use the pushbullet extension/or app to text from PC. Not sure if that is what you are looking for :)

MAGIC!

Nah, just a way to text from my tablet/MacBook Pro that doesn't involve a browser. And a winning lottery ticket, but that's another issue.

I thought pushbullet had a mac app now, so you dont need to use browser, but not sure on this.

Cant help you on the tablet though, if you are talking iOS tablet. I've sent feedback to pushbullet urging them to let me reply to my android phone texts from my ipad, that's the last piece of the puzzle for me. ;)

Turns out it does.

It's a shame about the iOS tablet.

I caved and bought a Nexus 6

Greetings from the UK! Been on holiday since last Friday; brought both devices, N6 and iP6+ but only been using the latter. I hate to say it but it's been a delight using iMessage/FaceTime to contact family in the states. And the camera on the iPhone is just much better IMO. I still love my N6 but unfortunately it's still in my luggage . Maybe I'll use it in Paris or Amsterdam.

WhatsApp to the rescue. Most of my friends have adapted to this app because between BB, iOS, and Android.. group texting/chatting became a mess...

Honestly, I haven't used iMessage in a while.. Skype has replaced FaceTime, and WhatsApp, and regular texting, have taken over iMessage.

Most of the people I talk to do SMS, and none of them want to move over to another platform. :\

The people that matter have all migrated to Hangouts with circles setup so whenever it comes to sharing video we just use G+.

I've been saying this forever now, but I wish Google would put some love into Hangouts and make it a true iMessage competitor.

  • Quick Reply
  • Video over IM
  • Attach multiple photos

That's all I ask for. :(

I had thought Hangouts was going to be their iMessage competitor, but it's starting to look like it's not going to be. I'm starting to think it's about the different Android/Google philosophy.

Dbrand is the best IMO after using both. Amazing quality and precision cuts and selection. I have the carbon fiber white one on my White N6 and it adds a great level of gripability and looks fantastic.

I posted it about 2-3 pages back so you can see pics.

Agreed. With a dbrand skin and simple screen protector I don't feel like I need anything else on the nexus 6.

I'm currently using the matte from bestskinsever and it is my preference atm. I've had SW, Armorsuit and DBrand but I like the fact that the matte adds nice grip, has no fingerprints (outside of the obvious greasy fingers scenario) and just plains looks good to me.

Looks like Google Messenger now has Quick Reply. Maybe that's where Google is going?
