So I was thinking about this SIM thing. So in theory if you take your At&t SIM out, and just use the phone on WiFi, you should get the update right? That is if you believe its the SIM that dictates the update. I for one don't understand why my unlocked Nexus 6 is bound to the same rules as a nexus 6 under contract with At&t. That is the point in buying unlocked right? You don't have to deal with a lot of the carrier bull crap.

That's what I assumed in theory too.

This is what I was hoping to hear as well but it doesnt seem like that is the case.

So then if that is not the case then how are people here saying its the SIM that dictates the updates? I have an unlocked version of the nexus 6. If I remove my SIM that means its not tied to any network at all. No carrier could stop that update, but it does not work like that. Or at least I don't know of anyone here who has seen it work that way.

I think what was said was that if you have an unbranded N6. Reset it and go through setup without inserting a carrier sim and it should get the latest update? This way it should get the update straight from Google itself and bypass carriers. But once you insert a carrier sim then the device can be controlled through the carriers update cycle/process.

Weird. So I wonder why I did not get the At&t bloatware if I set it up with the At&t installed?

Did you set yours up with the AT&T Sim inserted? I didn't insert my SIM until after I had logged into the device for the first time. I also noticed that AT&T didn't recognize my Nexus 6, which broke tethering, I had to call to get it working.

I did have it installed when I started the phone. I have not had any issues other than not getting the update to 5.1.

Can anyone confirm that if you start the phone up without the SIM installed it will get the 5.1 update? It just seems weird that would work.

Oh I totally side loaded 5.1. I waited a week and a half an never got 5.0.1 so I didn't bother waiting to see this time if AT&T would block the update. Especially one that would correct the kernel panics I was experiencing.

So would it do me any good to wipe my device and start it up with the SIM not in the phone, and then put it back in after setup?

That is true. Only issue is I don't know if I will have to completely setup my Moto 360 again. Never dealt with android wear in that regard

I think you will get the option after factory restoring to restore from your previous Android Backup in Lollipop and it should bring back everything including app settings, homescreen layout / folders etc... In theory it should bring back the 360 data. Theory ;)

Do it please and be our guinea pig as this is the only thing stopping me from buying this phone. :)

It worked. Got a notification that 5.0.1 was available right when I started it up. Also durning startup it says put a sim in, but I just skipped it. Haha AT&T I got past your crap.

5.0.1 or 5.1? I assume you mean 5.1 but still YAY :D

Wow AT&T was that behind?

Yep they sure were. Man I hate them. Oh and the backup only half worked. It backed up my apps, but I am having to login into everything again, and it appears it did not save all the data in the apps. Oh well worth having a real nexus

I take it back. I went to download 5.0.1, and it was about to restart. It counted down to 0 and never restarted. It then said the phone was update with 5.0. At&t has a hold on this thing.

It seems restoring your device and not having the Sim in will do the trick, but you can't put the Sim in until the phone is updated. I did not do that, and I am not restarting the phone again. I guess I will be stuck on 5.0 unless I want to sideload 5.1

So it does work just need to get past a certain point before placing the sim back in and then it works.

Promising trick at least

Well I just read an article that says once you put the At&t back in, it throws it back to 5.0. I have no idea if that is true or not. Like I said I am not resetting this thing again. Android wear is a pain to try to set up again

i bought this phone from the play store but am using it with Verizon. i'm stuck on 5.0.1 and would like to update to 5.1 but i don't want to go through the whole process of resetting and starting over from scratch. should i just wait? is the update really worth it?
