It's probably easier to install friggin adb on your computer and learn how to sideload the OTAs rather than messing around with resetting

Normally this is required if you are too impatient to wait for the OTA to hit your device, sad that it now seems required to get the OTA at all for att/Verizon on nexus 6 (well until whenever the carrier decides to give their blessing)

So then if that is not the case then how are people here saying its the SIM that dictates the updates? I have an unlocked version of the nexus 6. If I remove my SIM that means its not tied to any network at all. No carrier could stop that update, but it does not work like that. Or at least I don't know of anyone here who has seen it work that way.

I know it sounds ridiculous but this has all been well.documented. just head over to XDA and check for yourselves.

I've had my nexus since November, for the record.

----------

I think you will get the option after factory restoring to restore from your previous Android Backup in Lollipop and it should bring back everything including app settings, homescreen layout / folders etc... In theory it should bring back the 360 data. Theory ;)

Does not bring back the 360 data unfortunately. I don't know why but I always have to go through the process of resetting my 360 to repair after a wipe

----------

I take it back. I went to download 5.0.1, and it was about to restart. It counted down to 0 and never restarted. It then said the phone was update with 5.0. At&t has a hold on this thing.

Did you pop the Sim back in? You have to wait til the ota is completely installed and then when its done it'll prompt for 5.1. Then after that's done you can reinstall the Sim

----------

Well I just read an article that says once you put the At&t back in, it throws it back to 5.0. I have no idea if that is true or not. Like I said I am not resetting this thing again. Android wear is a pain to try to set up again

Article is false

----------

i bought this phone from the play store but am using it with Verizon. i'm stuck on 5.0.1 and would like to update to 5.1 but i don't want to go through the whole process of resetting and starting over from scratch. should i just wait? is the update really worth it?

The update is very much worth. Say good bye to stutters and redraws and then dialer is snappy

Changes are generally of the fix variety. If you aren't suffering any problems wait, of you do have the memory leak 5.1 improved this.

I understand you have had your nexus for awhile. I just thought the way you talked you never got the update. Also you kept telling me I would have bloat and that would be the sign that I At&t still has some control. I never had bloat even when I put my Sim in before setting up the phone. I don't know, but Google really messed up letting carriers do this.

Honestly why? Did they really think the carriers could offer exposer that selling on the Google play store could not offer? Was it really worth it? Like I said before, At&t does not even offer it in there shops. You have to order it online.

I still love the phone, but I am extremely disappointed with Google. It stinks to be stuck on the first version of a new update of Android. They always need a little work, and now I am stuck for who knows how long.

Well at least in this go around the carrier shens are relegated to a carrier partition. They aren't supposed to mess with the others. Makes it easier to get rid of changes made.

I wonder if Google did this to get the perceived (US) price point down to 250. Lots of folks balked at paying 650 for the device...

Unless I'm missing it, there is no carrier bloat on the T-mobile variant I got.

The update for 5.1 took about a week after I bought the device. Runs great!

Yea T-Mobile is the good guy carrier as far as this stuff goes, bootloader usually unlockable on other phones too
Yep I don't think they ever mess with updates. They let Google handle it.

Be thankful you have T-Mobile right now. It seems they are the only carrier that doesn't mess with updates.

I wish Google could take the same stance as Apple. If you want our phone, you have to go by our rules.

I wish TMO had better coverage in my area. I would hop over to them in a heartbeat just for unlocked BLs.

So the more I use the phone, the more I love the design. I am really starting to like it better than the iPhone 6+. The feel in hand is amazing. The white band, metal band, and black front just look so good together. Just wish At&t would keep their a** out of updates. They have no business doing that. They have no idea what updates need to be pushed through.

I'm still finding the size in hand much bigger than I expected or would have thought. The blue back on mine is driving me nuts because it attracts so much oil. Why they chose this back rather than the matte black on my Moto X which doesn't get so smudgy. Thankfully I have Spigen cases coming which should alleviate that.

It really feels a lot larger than the 6+ to you? I don't see that much difference.

For you, maybe. I have work pants and it fits rather nicely. Same was true with the 6+ and 1520. Maybe with skinny jeans or women's pants, sure.

Describe work pants.

This?

Then i'd agree with you...:D

It doesn't appear that much different but in the hand the extra width is certainly noticeable to me. Plus I'm so used to its smaller brother as well (Moto X 2014).

It actually feels closer to the Lumia 1520 than anything else I have owned or still own.

My friend who also owns the N6 was able to update to 5.1 successfully with our link we have been talking about the past 2 pages or so.

He said it worked perfect outside of the apps not instantly loading up and he had to go download them from the store again. Everything else came over fine once he picked his profile.

The fact that it is doable puts me back in the market for one once I sell my 6+.

Not sure I understand? By activiting the phone with no Sim inside? Wouldn't that require a reset for every subsequent update? I dont think I'm understanding :)

Yea I've been testing T-Mobiles promo tablet plan in my iPad and i m still afraid to switch in my area too. When it has lte it is great, but in lesser areas where atts hspa is still great, T-Mobile is not

Man I really want to try it again, but its a pain in the put. If you get the phone it will be a breeze for you. The issue is every time there is an update will we have reset out phones.

Yeah I am just so use to the 6+ the size does not bother me at all. How do you like the camera? Can you give us some of your awesome photos?

I have owned 5 Nexus phones, my Wife currently has the Nexus 6 me the OnePlus One.

My point is, I always thought of the Nexus line as the geeks phone the developers phone. Meaning it's meant to be rooted and custom Recovery installed the minute you take it out of the box with the plastic still over the screen LOL.

Waiting for updates on a Nexus ? Just flash it, end of story.

If you're waiting for Verizon or ATT to send you the update, you'll be waiting awhile.

And Sprint.

Just for Clarity, the updates still come from Google but the ATT likes playing god. :/

Drove me insane as well and I don't use cases. I wound up going through different skins before settling on a clear skin; added a little grip too.

I'm 36 and sorry but if i'm using normal jeans then introduce an iphone 6+ on the front pocket and then i sit....that will end in a mess for sure...a bend mess.

Never had the 6+ without a case, but my Nexus 6 sits in my pocket no problem.
