They didn't have ilife 06 or iwork on any of the computers :(

Even the San Francisco Apple Store didn't have them until Wednesday afternoon and they were on the verge of selling out by the time I got back there (for the third time!) late in the afternoon.

Good. You showed the power of iWeb. I even redid my welcome page with a song and graphic based on what you did. http://web.mac.com/jlenkiewicz/iWeb/Site/Welcome.html

It does open up what is fair use though. Can we post a like you and I did a song that means something? That adds to the value of what we are trying to say? Can we post a favorite cartoon strip like the one floated this week the day before the keynote? Just what is allowed?

Well - I got the message that I will go to hell cause I used 'music that I do not own' - but since I paid for the original CD and I'm not selling it and no one should be taking it off the site... I may still make it to heaven - but for now I was just clicking buttons to see how much I could do in 5 minutes....

Life goes on and in the long run.... I can live with myself since I PAID for the song... but if I get B*tched slapped for being a kid with a new toy - I'll sue apple for allowing me to upload that song.

hahahahahahahah

just kidding I'll deletet it and send Stevie J a donation to further support the mother ship!

Hey, I wasn't trying to cause problems. Hell I posted a a site that worked off of what you showed what was possible.

I was asking from a sincere standpoint. Just what is "fair use". In particular in light of iWeb. Sure it asks us if we are the copyright holder for materials. But do most understand the complete meaning of that? I sure don't. So many laws re being passed wit out our knowing the true ramifications of them in the last few years.

More directly, under my sample page; is it fair use (if I provided more explanation perhaps). And just when in my example does my posting benefit the copyright holder for brand recognition and future sales?

So I havent heard if you can only upload these sites to .mac? Or, can you export them and upload them to any old site?

There is an option to save them to a folder. That could then be up loaded to another site. Not sure of any content limitations.

my bad

No I never meant to say you were causing a problem - I was just joking about the message iWeb gave me.

and as for the true 'rules' I bet even a lawyer's lawyer does not truely understand them. But Like a burgler falling through a skylight sueing the home owner succssfully - if APPLE feared this - they would have not made it so easy.:p

That is my opinion - however - I will not take it to court and will not 'fight "THE MAN" - not worht the effort.

STUPID: but using go Live - I made the 'Made on a Mac' appear upside down!

No, not without permission :(
That adds to the value of what we are trying to say? Can we post a favorite cartoon strip like the one floated this week the day before the keynote?
Technically? Can't even do that.

In real life, little uses like that are usually ignored. Most personal pages don't get enough hits for it to really matter, and it's too much hassle to go after something like that. If your page got zillions of hits, or contained a whole collection of songs, you would be more likely to be hit with a takedown notice. It's a risky thing to do, but in the examples posted here the risk is pretty low.

You can change the name of each of the pages

Chip NoVaMac said:
My main issue is not being able to rename lets say the "photo albums" to other than Photos, Photos 2, and the such. Very bad IMO.

You change the name of the photo pages in iWeb. All you have to do is click on the name of the page you want to rename in the left hand column in the iWeb program, just as if you were going to rename a file in the finder. After the name is highlighted, rename it and call it whatever you want. :)

Is it me or is iLife '06 using up a lot more hard drive space? I mean I realise it's going to be bigger due to iWeb and Garageband update, but it seems a gig or so hefty??

When I was installing iLife '06 I noticed during the iWeb portion of the installation there was a mention of "installing templates" in various languages including Japanese, German and so forth. Exactly where are these templates for iWeb being stored? I can't see them anywhere.

I purchased iLife '06 just as it got off the delivery truck at my local Apple retail store. They had three delivery trucks with a full load. Apple must sell a ton of products at that location alone.

iPhoto was worth the upgrade alone for me with the speed and seeing the album names as you scroll. The one button filter effects seems to be weak, I wanted more. I briefly looked at iWeb, I can't comment more until I put together something real. Garageband still has the wood interface. One feature I wish Garageband had would be able to view sounds / loops by install. I purchased the addon packs and I can't verify what was installed or just view only the sounds available by the pack. Also it took awhile to find the new loops that comes with iLife '06. I was impressed with the sounds / loops provided.

How did you get it so soon? Do they have them for sale at MWSF?

If so, I really really gotta get there, pronto. I'm getting awfully interested in iWeb and .Mac since I'm utterly clueless when it comes to um... technology overall.

The local Apple Store by my house had iLife.
To answer a few questions, iPhoto is ALOT faster. I have 3000+ photos in my PB g4 1.4 with 1.5 gig of RAM and it takes 1 dock bounce to open and then a couple more seconds to load all the pics. And the new editing features look good, but I will still use aperture.

iWeb is OK its very basic program for those who know nothing of web design. It has some pretty cool templates but there are only 8 or 10.

Havent messes with iMovie or iDVD yet. I just hope they fixed the widescreen issues in iDVD

Two questions...

When ordering cards in iPhoto, can you order multiples of different cards at the same time (as you do with prints)? Or, like books, do you have to order them individually?

Just curious about the postage - when I buy prints, it's a single charge if I buy them altogether. When I buy books (or at least hardcovers), it charges for each individual one. So which is this?

Second question - for anyone in the UK who has got iLife yet: Any idea on the UK pricing for the new print options? The equivalent page on Apple's UK site can't be found - and the 05 one has vanished.

Problems with iLife 06 and LaCie 16x FireWire DVD Drive

I picked up iLife 06 primarily for the support in iDVD for 3rd party DVD burners. I have the LaCie 16x DL Lightscribe burner and was really hoping to be able to burn directly to it via iDVD. So last night I stopped by the local Apple store and picked up iLife 06 and ran a test DVD through it. No good. Same exact problem as before just an unspecified error while burning DVD. Has anyone else tried this and had any luck? I was unable to find an actual list of supported burners anywhere on Apple's site, so if anyone has seen this and can provide a pointer that would be great.

About the only other thing I spent any time with was iPhoto and I can say without a doubt this is a huge improvement in performance on my Mac Mini (1GB RAM 1.42Ghz CPU).

Can you save as a disc image and burn in toast or disk utility?

Does iDVD even have DL support?

My standard account say 10GB data/transfer a month

Chip NoVaMac said:
Thanks. I corrected my original post.

I think the narrow templates is a long term solution. I think this plays well for a future MacTV that was rumored for this past show.

I used to sell computer hardware, and there was no profit there. It was in services. For Apple services in the the past meant AppleCare. To a lesser degree it meant .Mac, until this week. With the greater storage, and greater bandwidth - .Mac has come to be something worth while.

But with iWeb, I can see a very near future of .Mac members (myself included), that can find themselves maxing the 1gb transfer rate with the new capabilities (all depending on their popularity). Apple is allowing .Mac members 1gb transfer a month. The next jump is 25gb a month for about $50US a year.

I hate to say it, but vanity does have its price. For if my future iWeb blog was a hit, I might be willing to pay the piper in order to keep it going.

My account has 1gb of webspace and 10gb of bandwidth a month (broken up into 5gb bimonthy limits). Are you referring to the webspace or the transfer bandwidth? Maybe they increased in recently, but if you check in your accounts page, you should see the upgrade.

first error message

uploaded my web pages with iweb last night. 15 pages with 256 MB. since i knew it would take hours, i went to bed. when i woke up i had an error message that said there was a problem with the table of contents and it didn't upload. didn't tell me on what page though. will try again tonight.

That would be I. I don't know the least bit about web stuff.

As far as only having 8-10 templates, I'm sure Apple could release more templates in the future right? In some form of software update or maybe even via .Mac.

The lamest part

I got iLife from my local Apple store as well yesterday, but there is one seriously lame piece to iWeb that not many people have picked up on yet....

You can only publish your site from ONE Mac/User......

Yes, you heard that correctly....it even points this out in the support section of apple.com.....

At home, I want to use my "outdated" iSight iMac to create my site but if say I take a trip and want to update my blog via my Powerbook I can't, SOL.....

Or if I just want to work on my site on my PB downstairs and don't want to head up to my Office....SOL

This is so ridiculous that at first I thought I MUST be missing something, but when I went to apple.com I found this........it provides a work-around if I'm heading out of town, but still seems utterly ridiculous

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303045

I'm sure this will be fixed soon, but stil beyond lame
