after reading the "support" page for iWeb, I have found the following.

"Publishing a site to a server instead of to .Mac

Instead of publishing your site to .Mac, you can publish your site locally (to a folder) so that you can upload it to the server of your choice."

This means no FTP. You will have to manually upload. This sucks. Maybe someone can write a program to go along with this to upload and sync your machine to your web space....

This is deffinetly a turn off.

Does anyone know how to point my domain name to my .mac space? An auto link?

I got iLife from my local Apple store as well yesterday, but there is one seriously lame piece to iWeb that not many people have picked up on yet....

You can only publish your site from ONE Mac/User......

Yes, you heard that correctly....it even points this out in the support section of apple.com.....

At home, I want to use my "outdated" iSight iMac to create my site but if say I take a trip and want to update my blog via my Powerbook I can't, SOL.....

Or if I just want to work on my site on my PB downstairs and don't want to head up to my Office....SOL

This is so ridiculous that at first I thought I MUST be missing something, but when I went to apple.com I found this........it provides a work-around if I'm heading out of town, but still seems utterly ridiculous

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303045

I'm sure this will be fixed soon, but stil beyond lame

Wow. Now that's pretty lame. I hope they fix that.

Are there new Automator actions for iWeb? Seems like you can easily make a workflow to publish the site to a folder and then FTP it to a non .Mac server.

RapidWeaver definitely trumps this application currently. Maybe in rev. 2 or 3 iWeb may become something worthwhile, but as it stands right now RW still has my money...

This will be harder than it looks I suspect, because iWeb saves its native files locally and then converts them into html and images for upload to the server. The trick I mentioned above, where iWeb converts text fields to a graphics image, wouldn't work if the Mac doing the editing didn't have access to the original iWeb files. So I don't think it's a lame limitation -- it's apparently inherent to the way iWeb works.

All of that completely went over my head. :eek:

If I do get it... the tough call to make: use my love, the computer I put all of my photos on (the iMac) or use the iBook (so I can access and update anywhere/anytime)? Hmm.

Could you have iWeb store the native files somewhere in the .Mac repository?

Just let .mac syncing sync the iWeb repository... problem solved.

So exactly how customizable are the iWeb templates? Can you choose a blank page, like Pages, and drag and drop the elements you want onto the page? Or you forced into a template?

As far as only having 8-10 templates, I'm sure Apple could release more templates in the future right? In some form of software update or maybe even via .Mac.

I suspect there will also be plenty of third-party templates available in the coming months as well... just like the all of the third-party Keynote themes that are out there.

iLife -> Applications -> Pro Applications

iPhoto -> Aperture
iMovie -> Final Cut Express -> Final Cut Pro
iDVD -> DVD Studio Pro
GarageBand -> Logic Express -> Logic Pro
iWeb -> ????

Anyone noticed iTunes is strangely not part of iLife anymore? It is still part of the digital lifestyle even if it is free and sits uncomfortably as a second music application.

Speaking of which, Final Cut Express didn't get an update this year, and FCEHD wasn't a universal binary. I was hoping a new version would include a (very) chopped down Motion or Soundtrack Pro, although I guess both of these apps are already priced very affordably for the prosumer market. Still, I wonder what Apple has up it's sleeve for a universal binary FCE? A "crossgrade" ala the Pro apps at the end of March, or do they have a whole new version to bring out soon?

Funny you mention that, I was just thinking about it this morning. A cool pro web design app from Apple would be really nice. From what I've been reading seems that iWeb as simple as it looks is really much more powerful then say Sandvox or Rapidweaver which are basically just heres a template fill in the blanks, then change the template (just switching out CSS & images). Seems like iWeb has done WYSIWYG right, valid XHTML/CSS and all. The code could be human readable, and they could use more external css; but these are minner compared to be able to give the power to move things around freely, easily convert text to images and make pages that work in the top browsers.

Of course a pro product would have more features, code editor, full code completetion, custom templates, etc... But just having a WYSIWYG editor that creates CSS that looks the same in the enviroment as the browser would be great. I open up "clean" css and XHTML files that work in all the browsers but some how DreamWeavers editing enviroment always seems to display it wrong.

Question: does iWeb allow you to upload to non-.Mac websites?

My guess is no. Which is too bad for people like my parents, who might like to put up pictures and things, but are too frugal to pay for .Mac.

I skipped the iLife '05 upgrade, but I'm seriously considering getting '06 because of the new photo sharing features. It would be cool to buy my parents a copy so they can subscribe to my "photocasts" (what a silly word :rolleyes: ), and even better if they could upload their own stuff to their own webspace.

Yes and no. It supports non-.Mac sites, you just have to manually upload yourself.

Ah, ok, thanks. Which means it's out of the question for someone like my mom. I fully understand that they want to make money with .Mac, it's just too bad they couldn't make the software just as easy to use with other websites.

Someone will most likely make a plug in for this one. I really want to figure this one ASAP.

How much faster is iPhoto?

My copy of iPhoto 5 seems to scroll much faster than before since 10.4.4 but I'd pay the $90 bucks just for faster iPhoto opening/closing and the new editing features.

I thought it was $ 79...$99 for a family pack.
