Runcore installed!!!!!!

After a near meltdown, I recovered by finding a local MacWorks Consultant to do the swap. As you can imagine it was a simple procedure for him. Cost was very fair and he turned it around in an hour. The Sata interface was damaged so I got an RMA from MyDigitalDiscount and will return it. I agree with the consultant that the provided external enclosure is "cheap". Also, as stated, the screwdrivers in the package were less than adequate. My xBench scores are very similar to Scottsdale's. I am pleased and relieved. Can't wait to use the Runcore! Special thanks to: Scottsdale, bugout and Runcore.

So are peoples screwdrivers just crappy or are they the wrong size? Also, has anyone had a good experience with the included enclosure?

Also, MajorTCS, how much did that consultant charge you for the install?

It would be great if someone could answer these because I have the same questions.

I don't know...it just seems so expensive just to upgrade the hard drive. 459.99$??? I'd rather sell my Rev A and spend the 3-400 on a new refurb with an ssd included...

Keeping my Rev. B and spending $412 (after Bing) is worth it to me. :D

For me the included screwdriver did not work. It was too large, but I had one that worked fine. And I never did get the enclosure to work with my original drive. The RunCore SSD is working fine and very quick in the Air.

One of my screwdrivers was too big. The other was just not proper fitting for the small screws and felt like I would strip the screws. I would just say use the right tool for the right job. Anyone opening a Mac should have the right screwdrivers. I always use my own tools anyways, so I wouldn't expect the screwdrivers from Runcore.

Back to the pricing. I feel like the price is dirt cheap to make the MBA feel like a completely faster/different Mac. It really changes the entire user experience to a much faster Mac than the MBA. Upgrading from Rev A to Rev C isn't the same as upgrading the drive. Figure that the Nvidia GPU is critical for normal performance from the MBA. The Runcore SSD makes the MBA feel extraordinarily fast. I don't know how anyone who spent $3099, $2499, or even $1799 wouldn't want to completely upgrade it for $450. And that doesn't even take into account how much you could sell the stock SSD for on eBay which seems like over 75% of the cost.

For me, this is a no brainer! The Runcore SSD makes the MBA feel like an extremely fast Mac at the system level... not just read/write speed.

going from non-SSD to SSD is worth the $450,
BUT is it worth it to go from the oem SSD to the Runcore?

I'd like to ask the RunCore representative if the drives have features such as Garbage Collection or similar that will keep them running faster than other SSDs.

I think so as I upgraded from stock 128 GB SSD to a Runcore 128 GB SSD. The performance of the drive is 3X over the stock SSD. That's a big jump, and the whole system feels fast... no, really fast.

I guess one of the factors could be selling your stock SSD. I have been offered over $400 for my stock SSD by three people already. Some people don't know about Runcore on eBay, or some people want stock for whatever reason. I think it would be ridiculous to pay $400 for a drive that performs at 1/3 the speed of a Runcore SSD that costs $50 more.

If you just want to keep the original SSD, it becomes a little harder to justify until you have used the Runcore SSD. Once you use it, you will not be going back to the stock SSD. The difference feels nearly as great as the bump from HDD to stock SSD from the factory. It's a gigantic leap forward for speed.

My findings

Here are some random findings with the runcore for a Rev. A:

- The screwdriver is the right size for the external enclosure screws. For the MacBook Air, you need a philipshead #0.
- The enclosed (white/paper) ZIF "cable" was very hard to get into the runcore as it was very thick. I thought ZIF stood for "Zero Insertion Force" but that sure doesn't apply to these "cables".
- You don't need to remove the audio connector, just flip the black plastic bracket to the left.
- The enclosed ZIF "cables" were too long to use int he external enclosure. I had to fold it badly.

All in all, VERY impressed with the runcore. The speed increase over the 4200rpm 80GB HD is massive, especially with VMWare.

Let me know if everything works correctly. I know there have been some issues in the past with the Rev. A and the Runcore.

I replaced my HDD (Rev. A) with the original Samsung SSD and it kept crashing on me... I am not sure if it is because I copied the old HDD over to the SSD, or if it had some other issue. Is it possible for half of an SSD to die? because when it's about 32gb (half full) it tells me there is no more space left... even though finder says I have 32gb left on it, as does disk utility. I can't figure it out.

PS. If someone has an extra ZIF enclosure laying around, I would greatly appreciate it! thanks.

The RunCore rep that was posting here was talking about a firmware update.

Can someone give them a tap on Twitter for an update on it?

Just won a bid on a used MBA 2.13GHz Rev.C (6 month old). Also ordered Runcore 128GB from Rapid-Disk for 439.99 (or 449.99). They should both arrive late next week. Can't wait to build my own "ultimate" MBA!

I will post some updates once I get to play with them. Hope everything works out like Scottsdale sir recommended!!
