I do find it amusing that almost every implementation of widgets on the home screen can be completely trashed from a usability standpoint.

but you can also make the home screen looks as beautiful as you want. the user decides what the user wants. if the user like trash-look/usability home screen, it is the user choice.

i used Nova launcher, Zooper Widgets and customized icons to create the home screen(s, 3-4 differend home screen for home, excercising and work) i needed and liked.

nowadays i have iphone so im looking at icons and folders in front of the static wallpaper and actually never use so called widgets in ios.

Android has indeed many advantages, but somehow there is something missing. In the last four years I have been using Android phones, mostly from HTC and then Samsung. Samsung offers many features, but the deep integration with the OS is missing. It somehow feels incomplete. Also the performance is not on par with iOS. iOS might be boring, or even limited, but the user experience is one of a kind and cannot be found anywhere else. The quality of the apps is also another thing that bothered me on Android.
My last Android phone was a Note 9 and as you know, it has an Iris scanner. It worked pretty well (but not as good as Face ID), but 99% of the apps didn't use the iris scanner at all. Android doesn't have an API for this, so developers cannot take advantage of this feature. All of my apps used the fingerprint sensor. Now imagine how it is, using the fingerprint sensor all the time to authenticate. It is much easier to use Face ID. It is also very secure and makes the experience great. I log in to my internet banking and other apps, and I just have to look at the phone. This is just an example of how great Apple integrates everything in a way that benefits the user.
Overall, I understand why people would think about switching to Android, but at least for me, the overall experience is much better with the Apple ecosystem. The quality is just better.

It's all about how you organize. Personally, I find this screen much more pleasing and exciting to look at than the iOS widgets screen.

That's Google News, which is amazing, by the way.
Installed! Thank you, very nice indeed. Is there a way to change the order of apps shown when I hit the share icon for a story? I'd like to have Pocket appear as the first alternative but right now I always have to scroll until I find it in the list.

Umm that I'm not sure of as I've always give with the default setting!

Yeah i wanted something similar to apple news that i really liked on my iPhone and this is it...and the widget i have for it on many home screen is ideal for me.
I actually like it better than Apple News because it includes local news as well. I have feeds from all 4 of my local news stations in the app.

Yeah it works well

One thing i do love is when my google hubs aren’t around that is is saying ok google when in my car and my assistant actually knows what i’m On about and does it with no issue. Like finding the nearest bank even though I realised of crap it’s Sunday!

The google assistant is the only one who knows when it’s a bank holiday or other holiday and opening hours have changed! Siri and Alexa will just say the normal opening times but google will say because today is a bank holiday and then give you the adjusted opening times.

So I really tried to find a way but it seems that of all apps, Google News is the one where share menu customisation simply isn't possible. Bummer as it's the one where I now want it the most  In all other apps so far I've been able to just drag and pin Pocket to the first position in the menu. Meanwhile on iOS I can easily set this choice system wide and be done with it.

Ironically then, that's 2-0 to Google apps on iOS over Google apps on Android (in my personal use case): share menu customisation unavailable in Google News and the Transit Departures widget for Google Maps not existing on Android.

And before anyone gets defensive (@mjschabow this is not directed at you): no I am not an Apple fanboy out to bash Android. I'm just a smartphone geek who wants all platforms to be equal so I can get my preferred workflow happening on any device that stirs my gadget lust :D

Yeah it's amazing that iOS widgets have surpassed Android widgets. At this same time 3 or 4 years ago I was most likely ranting against iOS mainly because of widgets. It's a shame Google abandons stuff so much, from what I understand developing Android widgets is difficult and they break easily, which is why more and more devs are choosing just not to make them. Honestly what widgets are good these days other than weather widgets, and even then. Even Google sucks at them, the google voice widget got dumbed down, you can't scroll inside it anymore and half of it is taken up by the huge titlebar, number verification and do not disturb blocks, although of course there isn't even a widget for iOS but in either case I'm just going to open the app anyway.

iOS widgets seem much more elegant, refined and not eyesores. I wish I could get a single vertically scrolling page of widgets on Android, but due to the haphazard way they fit onto home pages and the lack of being able to stretch them out all the way to the edges of the screen, means I have to have 3 or 4 home pages just for widgets.

PS: How do you like the 6T? I almost grabbed one, it seems like a phenomenal phone, especially for the price. Almost instant OS updates as well. If it wasn't for the Pixel camera I would have picked up a 6T instead.
Hey sorry about this slow azz reply. You asked about the 6T - hilariously I've had such trouble making my mind up about this phone that I ended up not being able to say anything at all. But now, after using it side by side with my 7 Plus for a month, I feel like my opinion on it is finally settling. And my quick summary would be basically this: I like the 6T fine but I still prefer to keep my main SIM in the iPhone. I still haven't given up on it completely, but my gut feeling tells me I should sell it before the price dives too much, and then wait until September to go for either the Note 10 or the next gen iPhone Max.

I started writing down some specific points but stopped myself as it was getting too long, might pop into the 6T thread for that though. Basically what irks me the most is the actual outline of the 6T display which frames the content in such a way that it often looks messy or glitched out, which really disturbs me in the long run. Other than that I have no issues with it really, it's fast, on screen fp reader works fine, hasn't crashed a single time in a month, battery life great with fast charging being freaking wonderful, etc. Sadly I have little to say about the camera as I'm such a bad photographer and don't use very seriously. But yeah...basically mega bang for your buck if you can live with the shape of the display.

And Android itself of course, that's where I really haven't made up my mind yet...

It’s your money end of the day and you need to use what you like.

Apple is still great as it type this on my iPad Pro but the phone has become just a basic phone for me while my S10 plus what i can do on it is endless. I have my max near me and going back to it just feels so basic. (Not that’s bad) just different.

Still think people need at least a month personally when moving OS to know if it’s for them or not but I know with returns e.t.c that’s not always possible.

What’s interesting is that in the end, it wasn’t of the ecosystem that hold me back. I definitely found a way to survive without it and actually found other cool options. It was the OS that brought me back. I just had a certain comfort with it that android just couldn’t match. It doesn’t mean that iOS is better than android as far as an operating system, it’s just that I have become so used to and comfortable with the operating system that it just makes the most sense for me to stay on iPhone.

I can completely understand that. I've been on iOS for so long that I'm comfortable with it, just bored. But when I've messed around with my wife's S9, I like it, but it's also a lot to take in. It's a little overwhelming. But then again, I'd probably get used to that and comfortable with it too.

Haha. Very cryptic of you! I'm torn on it all. I think an S10/Galaxy Watch/iPad combo would be the best for me, but still haven't pulled the trigger.
That’s my combo now and it’s working great.

I still use my iPad Pro and will never get rid of it. Doesn’t mean i won’t be tempted to get the tab S4 as a tablet for the sofa or to watch high quailty video in bed. My 12.9 works great for sitting at a desk, table or on the sofa sitting up. It’s a combo which i think works well.

I think my next nine phone device will be a MacBook air. I just need to find one at a decent deal. I have the iPad Pro but it didn’t fully replace a computer for me. And my Windows laptop is on the fritz.

I was thinking of doing the same thing. I have a IPP 11 and it has not lived up to what I thought it would be....might sell it and get a MBA instead and run Windows on it.
