I guess I don't get the outrage. There are a variety of iPhones available. There are a variety of non-Apple smartphones out there. Why are we just looking at the most tricked out model? If I were to buy a new car, there's a ton of options available. I'm not going to look at the car costing $500K and be upset that it's not in my budget. I'm going to look at what features I actually need along with my budget and then pick something that aligns well. I'm sure that, for 95% of people, any of the existing iPhone options will work.

the only way i would buy it is if i get a chance to buy it while i am on vacation in the US. no way in hell am I gonna pay the Euro price for a phone. it is so much cheaper in the US

That Bokeh adjustment is already available in Dark Room! Probably in many other 3rd party apps as well. They literally had nothing new in the XS! I can't justify why they didn't drop it to $899 this year! It's repackaged X all over again.

Really?! You wonder why they didn’t drop the price to $899....... because Apple likes money! Just like everyone else.

If years of consistent responses on this forum are anything to go by then there really hasn’t been anything new since the retina screen in the iPhone 4. We’re essentially using an incremental update to the iPhone 4. Strangely, current phones are awesome by comparison. They have been for years.

I love Apple products, but these phones are pretty much the same as last years X.

If there were decent upgrades then charging the same pricing tier wouldn’t be a huge issue.

Seeing as the upgrades are very minimal, not sure how they’re charging the same premium pricing as last year.

It just goes to show that the X is still an awesome phone because Apple had to discontinue it due to the minor differences between it and the Xs.

I’ll be keeping my X with Apple Care and getting a replacement for $100 before the 2 years expire due to battery life health.

We all know Apple has been becoming progressively greedier and greedier and many people have been ok with that, but this year i think it's time that we say stop.

$999 for a phone that has literally not a single new feature besides slight improvements in water resistance and some "bokeh" crap that could literally be added as a software update. The a12 has only a 5-10% increase in performance cpu based on slides and the gpu upgrade won't be noticeable for at least the next 2 years.

the Xr could have been a success but it ended up too expensive considering it's a single camera with removed features like 3d touch. and what's with that disgusting bezel that looks worse than the iphone 8's bezel??

Maybe it's time to skip a generation and tell them that we're not gonna put up with being milked this easily?

Every word you’re saying here is true.

Odds are I’m still buying one on Friday though.

I like new phones. It’s a splurge for me, so I don’t justify it on cost. If I did I’d still be using a 5s.

But, again, every word you’re saying is true.

they could have EASILY made this a success just by releasing all their phones with a base storage of 256gb and making the xr have 3d touch + smaller bezels.

It is already basically a success. It is only a matter of how many billions they make. The storage game is what made Apple into a trillion dollar company. It has always been said your first trillion is the hardest.

Because people are slow to realize that using the cloud actually works out cheaper for many people. If you have really bad internet like Idid when I lived in Laos I would buy the highest storage. However all this talk about not being able to have access to data is nonsense and a first world problem. Oh no I went skiing and couldn't access my selfies!!!

So you buy extra storage either for personal reasons or possibly for the resale value of the phone. Otherwise you are paying the stupid tax and Apple is willing to oblige. It is funny to see so many people whine and next year they will brag about how much they sold their phones for second hand.

besides slight improvements in water resistance

Everyone was giving Apple crap for having 'only' IP67 instead of IP68. That's a nice improvement.

and some "bokeh" crap that could literally be added as a software update.

Sure. And you could theoretically run bokeh post processing on a 386 ... what's significant here is that the huge improvement in processing power on the XS allows it to be post-processed and modified real time, and smoothly. It's the increased hardware capability that allows them to introduce these kinds of software features.

The a12 has only a 5-10% increase in performance cpu based on slides and the gpu upgrade won't be noticeable for at least the next 2 years.

Where are you getting this idea that a GPU upgrade won't be noticeable for 2 years? It'll be noticeable instantly for any application that is GPU intensive.

Also, your numbers are wrong. It was 15% faster CPU, 50% faster GPU (wow!), and a hugely faster neural engine (nearly 10x the computational power ... even more wow!)

Maybe it's time to skip a generation and tell them that we're not gonna put up with being milked this easily?

You're forgetting the better stereo, the Smart HDR capabilities, faster FaceID, larger camera sensor that's 2x the speed and with bigger/deeper pixels,

Do what makes you happy. If you don't see value in this year's offerings, then by all means don't upgrade.

For me, I'm upgrading my X to a 512GB Max. :D Can't wait until the 21st!

The A11 is still the fastest mobile chip on the market. Why are you complaining that the A12 is "only" 5-10% faster?

Don't upgrade this year. A lot of people that are coming from 6 and 6s will more more than thrilled with today's announcements.
6s user checking in. Awesome phone, horrendous price

This year doesn’t feel like a massive improvement, at least visually. Other than a new gold color.

I’m not sure why I should upgrade tbh.

Are you still using the iPhones in your signature? If you haven't already upgraded from an iPhone 5, when will you? The 5 was a great phone. I upgraded to a 6 and that felt like a huge upgrade. I'm gonna upgrade this year to the Xs, so it should feel like an even bigger upgrade.

I should probably update that. I’m using the X. I had the 8, and the 6S before that. Skipped the 7.

You are not a victim ( read: mindless robot) unless you allow yourself to be used as such.

Step back and put the phone in it’s proper perspective, and you will find there was no real need to complain in the first place. So what if the phone is more than you want to pay. Buy a cheaper model, keep what you have, or buy Android.

There are a lot more things in this life more important than a iPhone.

It's ruthless to think that everybody uses iPhone for Facebook, Instagram & Twitter.

There are lots of people who use iPhones for business e-mails, browsing, presentations and cloud data. Bigger screen is not only for games.

There is an increasing number of bloggers day by day. These young people are able to not only click sharper images but also record videos at 4K for their fashion/travel blogs. They even edit on their iPhones. Unfortunately, it requires faster processor.

These are just 2 examples. There are so many industries where people literally use iPhone at it's best. Smartphones have evolved. You can't carry a MacBook and do videography or photography. Don't compare the price with it. MacBook/Pro too has serious limitations. It can only be used for business, editing etc.

If you just want to use Social Media apps or play games, iPhone XS not the right product. Those things even an Android smartphone can do and I guess that's the best bet.

I'm coming from iPhone 7 so it's still worth the upgrade for me this year but the truth is that people will upgrade regardless of price or features, and Apple knows that, so they take advantage.

I consider myself an average consumer, and I think Apple made 2 marketing mistakes:
1. 64 Gigabyte memory as base, especially on the Max, I would not think twice to buy 128 gig for $1,099. The cost for Apple for larger memory is low.
https://www.engadget.com/2018/09/12/the-iphone-xs-max-vs-the-competition-a-huge-step-up-in-size/
2. No double camera on LCD, I would buy XR if it had double lens camera.

I can afford the Max with upgraded memory but I will most likely pass and keep mu 7 plus litttle longer, as I am not really excited about Face ID.

And I don’t want to use cloud... streaming is not very reliable for me.

I agree with you regarding the 64GB for the base XS Max. I would pay $1099 in a heart beat. I didn’t upgrade last year to the X because I didn’t want to lose my home button and also I like the size of my phone.

If it wasn’t for my speaker starting to malfunction I would consider keeping my phone another year. Also I don’t see Apple bringing back the home button.

I was very excited about the new releases and was preparing to give away my money to apple for my iPhone X upgrade to some newer device. But since the XR is a downgrade, XS and XS Max adds no innovation as such (I don’t care about just spec bumps).. my money stays with me this year.

Sorry to be the boring sheep.. I had been upgrading every year post 6 plus (got the biggest spec’d one whatever available)

How are we sheep? No one forced anyone to do anything. If you don’t want to pay for a new phone..get nothing. Otherwise just get the one that fits your need.
