good you get what i mean then. what i'm saying is it's finally time to stop buying until the prices go from "absolutely insane" to "expensive" again

Well I totally agree with that - that's the best thing about a free market and laws against monopolies.

I moved to Android several years ago when I realised they're just as good (some, like me, may argue better) for less cash. Why anyone would spend $1,500 on a phone is beyond me. I didn't even spend that on my Mac which I would expect me to last at least 5 years.

I don’t see as being Apple greedy. You have the choice of purchasing their products or not. If you don’t like what you see, then simply move on to something else that fits your budget and your preferences. Everybody will find value in different things, I think iPhone X offers a lot, and more so for those who are possibly holding out to see what version two of the iPhone X would hold this year. We all have choices to make.

It was apple that started asking more and more with the last few years, it's greedy not even giving a fast charger and now not giving a dongle and the 64gb base storage, it's sicking and even the true hardcore apple users that upgrade every year are saying enough is enough, not that long ago the iPhone was €600, with trump and his tariffs and trying to get apple to repatriate, prices will go up more to the extent of only tech sites and the wealthy will be able to afford the iPhone
I’m also disappointed with no fast charger, but the lack of a dongle for headphones is standard Apple removing ports and telling everyone to move on. Something they’ve done forever. As for price, an iPhone (7) can be purchased for $450. Except for the original iPhone, Apple has always tried to keep a more affordable model or models available. The iPhone 7 has most of the capabilities of their premium model for less than half the cost.

They have become a trillion dollar company - they are publicly traded - of course they are greedy!
It is really interesting when people keep referring to choice of purchasing. Not applicable to all but what about things like peer pressure when it comes to real choice?
Apple have in the past created desirable products accessible to a large segment of population - the direction they are now consciously taking is one where there is top-tier accessible to a limited group of people -
It is reasonable to rant about it :)

Greedy is debatable, but I’m not interested in that. However, you have options, you don’t have to purchase their products simply because you don’t want to. No one is forcing anyone to pay Apples prices, you have options in the smart phone market if their prices are not appealing to you. It’s that easy. Personally, as long as Apple customer service and product quality is superb, I support that. But that’s my stance.

With regard to peer pressure, I don’t think we want to go down a path where companies are responsible if the people you associate with are jerks.

And I don’t agree Apple only wants to sell to the top tier of the world. They have affordable models and expensive models. Buy what you can afford and need, not what you want because of peer pressure or celebrities.

No point dismissing people as jerks for wanting what others have. Apple have it in them to create desirable products at affordable price points. Instead they consistently set the tone for price increases in the industry. Others happily follow

"Affordable". Sorry, the XR costs 1000 USD here. And they offer NO compact model anymore… I'll probably have to buy some SE until they are gone.
I believe they are selling the iPhone 7 for $450. Still a great phone. Over half the capabilities of the iPhone Xs for less than half the price.

I called those putting peer pressure on others the jerks, not the victims of peer pressure. And again with regard to price, Apple provides affordable models.

Wait until they “sell out” of their stock for some models – on the first day (The Xs max comes to mind) like they always do. Some people and some “on the fencers” will be going bat $#it crazy to throw your money at Apple! Just like they always do. Better get in there and buy early or be left out of the jealousy frenzy! You DONT want to be THAT guy!

That tactic always works!

I think quite a few people have stopped upgrading every year. Upgrading every year isn’t really a need thing it’s a want thing. Either stay mainline or just get s phones.
It has never been a "need" thing. Buying an iPhone has always been a "want" thing. Medication, food, water,.. Those are "need" products.

UK PRICES are insane I did purchase a iPhone 4 back then 16gb base model for £499 I was like wtf I'm doing spending £499.
Contract prices back then was £30 all u can eat everything on three uk packages free handset no upfront.

Now base model iPhone XS Max 64gb is £1099
contract prices now over £100 with all u can eat everything on three uk you still need to pay upfront cost.
bloody over £2400 for a mobile phone 24 months. lol

$999 for a phone that has literally not a single new feature besides slight improvements in water resistance and some "bokeh" crap that could literally be added as a software update.
The solution is simple, if the new generation of phones doesn't interest you, then simply don't buy it.

For me, the camera is pretty sweet. That's one feature that is a must have for me, and the camera upgrade has me thinking about trading in my X for an Xs

What camera upgrades? You mean those software gimmicks? I have news for you: they’re already available in 3rd party apps. Dark Room offers great Bokeh adjustment. Last time I checked it was $8, way cheaper than $999 lol

Its not gimmicks, and its pretty nice that you don't need to use third party apps. Hey, like I said, if the phone doesn't interest you, no one is forcing you.

I like what it has to offer, simple as that

I don't think Apple really intends on people upgrading every year. I am sticking with my X and not upgrading after a year for the first time, ever, since the 3GS (my first iPhone.)

I actually really like the XR - if it was an option last year I think I might have went for it, if only for the Product RED option.

The Xs is a nice option for those upgrading from a 7/7 Plus and waiting for a refined X. For those coming from the X you really aren't getting much - faster Face ID, slightly improved camera, and improved performance. To be honest, I have no issues with my X's performance at all, and Face ID is fast enough - I was hoping they would have added landscape Face ID, for the Max.

To me the only reason you should upgrade from a X right now is if you really want the Max size upgrade, otherwise hold out.

+1000000000000000000 totally agree, this is absolutely ridiculous, does the world think we're rich or something? We're getting poorer and poorer and the cost of everything is going up.

If you can't afford the top of the line gadget, you shouldn't even be thinking about it even if it magically goes on a 20% discount tomorrow. It's not for you. Get an iPhone 7 at $450. I have a 7 right now and plan to hang onto it. It's still a very serviceable device that'll still be relevant for years to come or you can even go retro and pick up a flip phone with a minutes plan so you don't have to pay a monthly charge. My wife's cell phone costs her around $40/year and she uses my old iPhone 4s as a mobile device over WiFi. Cell phones and wireless service is actually cheaper than ever unless you want to bling out.

I’m coming from an 8+ and I’ll likely preorder a XS Max tomorrow. Getting an optically stabilized telephoto lense is a big deal for me. I also take a lot of HDR shots, so I’m interested to see how good Smart HDR is.

Yes, other apps do the f-stop stuff for adjustable bokeh shots, but most people don’t want to use a third party camera app. They just want to pull their phone out, swipe from the lock screen and shoot.

As others have said, if you don't like it, don't buy it. I personally have just become a bit bored with it so thinking I'll skip this year. Not a big deal.

I’m missing something... there’s optical image stabilization in the iPhone XS?
Yep.
