Whats your problem people have upgrade plans so dont pay for the whole phone and upgrading yearly is cheaper, and all specs are upgraded and max is a huge update to me if u dont want it then don't buy it
How is upgrading every year cheaper?

i mean no one is forcing you to upgrade.

could you say that louder for the folks in the back.

folks also need to remember that this update isn't really for those that have a Ten but rather for those still on the 7 or that got the 8 last year. same as every S release over the years.

Something called a job?
Cute

When nearly 80% of the US population is living paycheck to paycheck and when the median earnings are 31k/year, it’s fair to question how people in the US can afford a phone that has nearly doubled from an already insusbstantial sum.

I’ll repeat, how do people afford these phones? Or do most, sadly, put it on a cc and live in perpetual debt?

It sounds like that situation isnt you but it is for many....

Apple has changed its strategy as far as wanting you to upgrade every year. The major changes to the iPhone are every 2-3 years It’s unfortunate but true
People don’t want to spend a $1000 on an iPhone but Apple makes that up with selling you services etc

My biggest disappointment, and I only have myself to blame, is that I wanted the max last year, it never came, so I caved. I'm certainly not stopped $1100 this year for the larger screen. But lesson learned. If it doesn't check off all your needs and wants, especially at the new flagship pricepoints, it's a no buy.

I'm having trouble imagining what I'd need to upgrade next year though. Size alone likely won't win me over especially after how sweet iOS 12 is treating me (genuine thanks to Apple there). Maybe a vastly improved Face ID that "sees" me in all angles including flat on a desk? Really, I don't even know.

My mother in law is by no means broke, they just pid off their $750k house in Southern California, and she's still using a 5c. She's looking to get an se but I'm talking her into a refurbished 6s, since I legitimately feel the experience is better, and it's only $250.

I say all of this because I feel like people's list for the brand new overcomes their judegement a lot of times. If you can't afford the phone and you buy it anyway, that's your own fault. The things you mention about low wages and living around the poverty line are tragic, and deserve looking into, but iPhone affordability should be close to last on the priority list. My mom is still using the 6s she bought three years ago and it's a solid performer, particularly with ios12. In typically "the guy" people come to with recommendations on devices and I honestly not longer feel the flagships are the best bag for your bucks.

Forgive me if I've somehow taken your words out of context. I didn't go back to see the back and forth, if there was any.

It's still called a job... that's how some people afford these things. Their financial situation is different than yours.

I mean, there's a whole lot to be discussed about why people are living paycheck to paycheck and how to resolve it - but these problems aren't going to be solved by Apple making their top-of-the-line phones cheaper so that everyone can afford them.

I don't know... I mean... it's pretty obvious how people afford these things - they're either falling into that 20% who is less concerned about living paycheck to paycheck (which is still tens of millions of people) or they're people who fall more into the "living paycheck to paycheck" category, but have decided this is a luxury worth fitting into their budget - which, to be honest, as far as luxury goods good is relatively affordable, especially if you can effectively get a 0% loan on it. Totally depriving yourself of "little luxuries" altogether because you would be better off putting that money elsewhere on paper is not necessarily the best thing for happiness.

Personally, I would never purchase a phone I couldn't afford outright... but I'm also not going to fault anyone for doing otherwise unless I know their financial outlook is especially grim... which, as best I know, these loans aren't really being handed out to people with poor credit?

I would never buy the X or XS, ever. It's a bad value and not worth the money. The XR on the other hand has its allure. Apple has the best LCD screens in the business and I find Stainless Steel to be a nightmare with scratching, and it's kind of tacky in my opinion. You can have the Apple lifestyle without paying an arm and a leg. I'm probably going to buy the 256GB Black XR. I'll keep it for at least 3 years.

I have a job. My wife has a job. We make very good $ and I think these phones are very expensive.

Never said they weren’t. I don’t smoke and I don’t drink. I feel like I can splurge yearly to get the latest and greatest.

Everyone makes their own personal decisions. My point is some people make $1K a week and some make it in under a day. It’s likely not a wise decision for the former.

We all know Apple has been becoming progressively greedier and greedier and many people have been ok with that, but this year i think it's time that we say stop.

$999 for a phone that has literally not a single new feature besides slight improvements in water resistance and some "bokeh" crap that could literally be added as a software update. The a12 has only a 5-10% increase in performance cpu based on slides and the gpu upgrade won't be noticeable for at least the next 2 years.

the Xr could have been a success but it ended up too expensive considering it's a single camera with removed features like 3d touch. and what's with that disgusting bezel that looks worse than the iphone 8's bezel??

Maybe it's time to skip a generation and tell them that we're not gonna put up with being milked this easily?
iPhone Xs, $999, will be supported for 5 years at a minimum.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9, only a slightly larger S9+ with a yellow stylus, $999, will only be supported for ~2 years (without timely OS updates).
Pixel 2 XL, $850, will only be supported for 3 years.

Who's greedy again?

All the talk is that smartphones have peaked. Just incremental upgrades now. Cheaper highly capable Chinese phones selling like hot cakes. Last year's iPhone X broke the £1000 mark for ths first time. Sales not so great. Surely Apple will have to start lowering their prices?

Sept 2018 Apple announce the £1449 512GB iPhone XS Max.

This is getting ridiculous folks.

Are people disgruntled the XS has more features than the X?

How is it "greedy" when Apple kept the $999 price?
Because $999 is an outrageous amount of money for a phone. Last year was defensible somewhat because the X was such a leap forward and this was supposedly getting you next years phone today for $999.
It turns out they’re just increasing the price permanently.

I don't think people are saying these phones are not expensive. They are. But for some, it is worth the money (just look at how many people posting their pre-orders). For some, it may not. Apple is still selling the iPhone 7 for $450, a perfectly good phone. I myself is still using my 6S, and actually thinking about keeping it (and just replace its battery) as it is still (and will) be supported for years to come (at least 2 to 3 years more),

On the flip side, Samsung is selling the Galaxy Note 9 for $999 as well. Is that expensive? Yes, and imo hugely overpriced for what you're getting (and Samsung will barely support it with OS updates for just ~2 years). and yet I don't see people complaining about it excessively.

Someone just posted a post here https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...esults-show-2x-faster-download-speed.2138871/ about how the XS and XS Max are up to 3 times faster than the X when downloading/streaming plus better radio reception. To me that alone is worth the upgrade for 4x4 MIMO and 256 QAM and the LTE-U/LAA. IF that doesnt spin your prop then theres also the machine learning and physically bigger screen that was missing last year. It isnt a iphone3 to iphone4 upgrade, but it isnt as little as a 7-7s upgrade either.

If you can afford it you buy it, if you can’t you don’t. Like the other poster said, you know you are allowed to not upgrade and ALSO not be indignant about it? There can’t be a single person on Earth who was surprised by what Apple presented, so people have to stop acting like Apple somehow totally broke their heart and let them down - everyone knew it was an incremental year. I mean, manage your expectations.

Does Apple only sell one single SKU for $999? No. Apple still sells the iPhone 7 for $450, and the XR (with the same tech as the Xs) for $800. There are iPhones for almost everyone at different price points.

And considering how many people getting the X last year, and the Xs Max this year, obviously the consumer are still willing to pay. Apple themselves was surprised. If you were a business, and found out your customers are willing to pay more for your stuff, you will do your best to satisfy those demand.

but we're not talking about last year's old crap. we're talking about the new iphone.
Once upon a time not too long ago actually a brand new new model iphone was $649.

and yes, if i were a business and found out customers are willing to pay more for your stuff of course id be inclined to raise prices.

what's outrageous here is that consumers like you are actually glorifying it.
this is apple simply raising their pound of flesh from you. you shouldnt be happy about it. it's insanity.

Me glorifying it? Where? Heck, I'm going to just keep using my 6S. On the flip side, is your constant ranting will change anything?

iPhone 7 is crap? LOL. Clearly you are a troll.
