Eventually an iPhone 7 will be as old as that iPhone4s
iOS 14 will eventually kill iPhone 7/7 Plus performance, just like the iPhone 4S in iOS 8 or iPhone 5/5S/6 in iOS 10. Those iPhones with 1GB Ram 5/5S/6 starts to get slower afer iOS 9 update.

Additional info: iPhone 6 is super duper close to iPhone 5 performance. in iOS 10 iPhone 5/5S/6 than iPhone 6S. The 6 piPhone 6 is only 100Mhz higher clocked than 5/5S. 64 bit is better if it has 1.8Ghz or 4Gb ram.
For iPhone 7 users, your still safe to update until iOS 12

No way buddy. Either the 5s and 6 are dropped at the same time or else the 5s will be dropped before the 6. I'm willing to bet serious dollar on that :p
Interesting, but for me iPhone 6 will be cut off first than the 5S. They will not be dropped at the same time, iPhone 6/6 Plus is only 1GB ram and has higher resolution and more pixels to push, unlike the iPhone 5S. Just like iPad 1st generation, it has 1.0Ghz but it DID NOT get iOS 6 because of bigger display but the funny thing is iPod Touch 4th gen with only 0.6Ghz still gets iOS 6 and it has WORST specs than the iPad 1.
Duh...

Please stop spreading misinformation. No way the 6 and 5 are anywhere close and the 5s will go away before the 6. Period.

I really hope people upgrade for the DND While Driving feature alone. I really hate how often I seethe drivers messing with their phones. You're not that important. Quit risking other peoples' safety so you can see how many likes your Instagram of your boring little salad got

I agreed 100% when I first brought an iPad 2 and updated, it made it a paperweight. $600 IN THE TOLIET. Same thing to my iPhone 4, for 9 months it ran slow and buggy it was a nightmare, and I could not afford another phone.

I learn its apples way (form of marketing way) to get us to upgrade on the constant but these devices are very expensive and aren't worth the pain and loss, its the reason I will never buy an iPad again, the phone when purchase will not be upgraded to the next ios ever, i'll upgrade to the next ios when I buy a new phone. And to those that say "oh its ok it will work itself out" is FULL OF IT. try spending $950 on a device and have it slow down drastically when you NEED IT FOR RELIABILTY

Quit defending apple when it comes to software updates because its basically throwing your phone in a pool.
Thank Apple for water resistance!

Every upgrade I've made to iphone or iPad has increased performance and function. Every company wants people to buy new models every time and companies wouldn't exist it this didn't happen.

Every time I upgrade to a new version of IOS, it usually ends up introducing a bunch of features I never use and slows down my phone. Since IOS 10 does everything I need, I won't be upgrading to IOS 11. This will be the first year where I don't upgrade. Will you be upgrading?

Of course. Great release, great features. One of the best advantages of an iPhone is having regular updates. And there's no way iOS 11 works bad on iPhone 7. I'm sorry, but not upgrading an iPhone 7 to iOS 11 is just silly, IMO.

You have no idea what you're talking about. Thanks to automatic updates, you will mostly be updated to iOS 11 without even realizing, thankfully.

Yes, and you shouldn't expect a phone from 2011 to perform well using 2015 software. The iPhone 6s, released in 2015, has a processor that is eight times as powerful as the one in the 4S, not to mention the significantly more powerful GPU, increased amount of RAM, and much faster storage. At some point, you have to start taking advantage of the increased headroom you have and leave the older devices in the dust.

And anyways, the person you replied to is referring to iOS 11 on the iPhone 7, which will only be one year old when iOS 11 comes out. iOS 11 will obviously run perfectly fine on it.

Automatic updates don't apply here... it may eventually download the update, but to install a system update YOU have to initiate.

If anything ruined Apple and I think they are great - probably the best technology company - is that people's expectations are unrealistic. However, when they report, like on this forum what they want they want different ICONS. Each IOS release has been huge but people don't want to realize that - the look is so old.

I'm going to keep my 7 on the last version of iOS 10 as long as possible. I've learned from experience since my iPhone 4 on iOS 4 it truly is best to keep your phone on the iOS version it ships with to have the best performance.

Still to this day the best iOS iPhone combo for me was my iPhone 5 on iOS 6. Man that thing was slick. The current iOS 10.3.2 is pretty close on my 7.

It's true though. Every major version year after year slows the phone down a little bit. Not quite as much in recent years because the chips are getting pretty powerful but it's there. And every time I've upgraded I've felt it right away and have downgraded.

Watch iapplebytes videos on YouTube. He does pretty good comparison videos. With the first version of iOS 11 of course it's laggy and glitchy but I bet by time the final comes it will perform not a whole lot better than it does now!

Apple has a great system in place to get people to upgrade every year or 2.

iOS 11 doesn't look like it does much new that I care about either. I'll stick with my lighting quick performance on my 7 with iOS 10.

I'll upgrade to iOS 11 as soon as it's stable enough to be my daily driver (probably public beta 2 or 3, maybe 4). There are far too many features in this update to ignore.

It's one of the largest updates to iOS in a long time.

I feel that if your device is 2 OR MORE generations behind the latest hardware release, it is at that time that you need to be weary of upgrading the OS, lest you suffer a performance hit. I wouldn't worry about the iPhone 7.

I saw someone on another thread (I cannot confirm the validity of the claim) say that iOS 11 on the iPhone 6 is "unusable."
Heard the same thing from people using iPad Pro's so I think its more it being a beta rather then legitimate issues, from a majority of what i have seen iOS 11 will perform better then iOS 10 did.

Fully agree. I am also a fan of the iPhone 5 + iOS 6 combo - the last legacy of the Steve Jobs + Scott Forstall's work. iOS 6 had no unnecessary animations and a software that has relatively fewer bugs/glitches compared to what we have today. Furthermore, a great design that the team doesn't update for the sake of updating like some of the controversial changes we have seen in the last few years of iOS (multiple changes of control center over the years, new notification center deprovement, giant, ugly fonts that get in the way of usability, a convoluted music app for those that only wants to play their own music etc.)

I just saw this video earlier this morning, which I think is a great comparison of the speed of the old operating system on an iPhone 5:

I guess the conclusion is that an iPhone 5 would've been as fast as an iPhone 7 on iOS 10 if its software had remained on iOS 6, the version it ships with. Yes, less features and less security fixes than iOS 10 - but if you can work with everything an older software offers and don't foresee yourself using the new features, why force an irreversible update? I've never heard of anyone around me having their iPhones 'hacked' due to running an older software as well.

First off, it's a beta, and many things can change. It wouldn't be logical to assume the performance of a beta will be the performance of the final product.

When it comes to iOS updates to iPhones, yes, it would be correct to assume your device will begin lagging after a few major updates. Consider the advancements in processor power when comparing desktops to mobile devices. While desktop processors gain a small percentage in speed with each new iteration (as well as other features), mobile processors experience dramatic changes with each new release. The new software that is released, then, is built with that principle in mind. This is necessary in a highly competitive market.

That reason is also why Apple & mobile carriers have created plans that give customers the easy ability to trade their current iPhones for newer ones. Ideally, we'd all like to get a good lifespan from our devices and get our money's worth, but with so much innovation surrounding mobile devices, it's getting more and more difficult to do so. Emerging technology, like ARKit for example, will only continue to develop and create new experiences for us. We need powerful hardware, coupled with modern software that utilizes that hardware, in order for those experiences to be fluid and meaningful.

From what I can tell, this is the path Apple, along with many other phone manufacturers, are following. However, this doesn't mean they are purposely ditching users with older models in the dust. As other users have said, iOS updates are especially meaningful when it comes to security and optimization. You may find that after a few years, your device will lag after installing a brand new iOS version. You, the user, must decide if you want to continue using that iPhone with the new iOS version, return to a backup made before the upgrade, or get a new iPhone.

iOS 11 is in beta stages. It is too early to judge its performance. Either get the beta and accept that it's a beta, or don't get it and wait until it's finally released before you do research on its performance.

Will absolutely be upgrading.

No I will not

Jailbreak.

When iOS 11 can be JAILBROKEN I may be on an iPhone 8 potentially

If not I'll upgrade the OS then on my 7Plus

NEVER upgrade your iOS version a full step, unless you like having your phone run slower and feeling obsolete faster. Some do.
