hi

i received the exact same calendar spam the OP received.
since Accepting or Declining the request lets the spammer know they have connected with an actual live address, I had to create a calendar and change the spam appointment to that calendar and delete the calendar.
hope apple gives a better way to simply delete it.

I wish I knew that two weeks ago lol. Now I have no calendar app until I hear a fix or update from Apple goes out.

I actually spoke to a few people I know with iPhones and it seems 2 out of the 3 people I asked got one like this. So the send out must have been HUGE.

Is this on Apple or is this just normal unavoidable spam?

Go to iCloud.com
click calendar
go to calendar preferences
select to receive email notifications rather than push

Thanks going to do this tonight.

Yeah but you shouldn't have to do that. The spam thing should just be eliminated all together.
There probably needs to be some better filtering and meachanisms for it all, but it doesn't seem that something like spam can really be just eliminated. Email spam has been around forever essentially (in the sense of email/internet) and while there are better and better ways to filter/deal with it as things progress, spam hasn't been stopped/eliminated.

Just to try and make it easier noticed a few steps were missed out.

Go to iCloud
select Calendar
Select Wheel at bottom left
Select preferences
Select advanced
Under Invitations change from inapp to email notification.

If Apple were a USA university athletic department it would have received the death penalty from the NCAA already for lack of institutional control.
For spam? Seems like petty much all email providers would have been god by now based on that kind of approach.

Just out of curiosity, if one does this, does the app no longer send you reminders about appointments, or is only for those pesky invites?

all reminders will be via email.. but personally this doesn't affect me because i don't use calendar invites, but if you do, the email wouldn't be that much of an issue anyways.

Ech, more hassle for me. I'll just do the calendar trick.

I have never, ever, ever received a spam invite to my Google or Office 365 calendars. I think I would have if they could have.
I'm sure plenty of people haven't received it via iCloud even now, let alone before (given that all the people posting questions about it recently were surprised by it, meaning they've never seen or even heard about it until just when it happened to them recently).

Well, don't I feel special. Of all the "widespread" bugs and whatnot this is the first that affects me personally.

Fairly easy to take care of this as of now, let's see how it goes from here.

It always seems to happen to me when I open the app Calendar 5... I religiously use Fantastical and have no problems. I occasionally open Calendar 5 and it is then when I see it infiltrate my iCloud calendar where I see it in Fantastical too. I decline the invitations in Fantastical and it goes away.

Right. I don't use iCloud calendars but I do keep them around for testing. Spam hasn't popped up on mine.

But if I have to start deleting SPAM from my calendar(!) it will take me about an hour to change providers.

Got the same one, twice, this morning. Super annoying.

Besides the clandestine spam, messages is turning into another problem on its own. I haven't had any problems as of yet, but I heard from many others on Black Friday they were receiving all sorts of spam messages.

In a moment of weakness, I made the mistake of declining a few of these -- now it's open season on my email address. This sucks. Clearly there needs to be an option for "Accept invitations only from contacts in my address book" (and/or an even better solution).

This is a problem and a severe security issue that's appears only hitting apple because of their implementation.

With Google or office calendars, all calendar invites are based on email. Yes you might get spam, but nothing goes into your calendar without accepting. Deleting the emails, delete the invite.

Apple has decided to allow calendars to receive invites directly with no email correspondence. But also limits the response by the user to only accept, maybe or decline.

This becomes a security issue because a forced response means the phishing attempts will confirm the existence of an active Icloud account.

Google calendar can automatically add events sent via email. There are options to disable that of course, just as there seem to be for iCloud as well.

You Can set calender invites to go to your email in calender settings on iCloud.com, and that way you can delete spam invites whiteout replying.
