I’ve heard that the EU is preventing Apple from releasing calculator apps.

Apart from the one in iOS? If that were a real story there would be hundreds of comments attached to a dedicated write up article on this site.

Seems to me that Apple is slowly paving the way here for true desktop-grade apps to appear in the iPad. Anyone who thinks it would happen all at once though in a big bang is in dreamland, Apple don't do it that way.

90% of all calculator requirements can be completed via spotlight

Agree, however the same logic applies to app icons on the Home Screen and App Library. People just like to have dedicated interfaces for their computing tasks.

Or to phrase it another way, Apple knows how to play the long game.
When you look at some of the iPad evangelists on here you can see why they do that. Dare to change it too much too quickly from the simple device their technologically-inept gran is happy to use so that it actually has the performance and abilities befitting its M-series chip, and they threaten to throw a fit. IMO, it can be both. I believe Apple think so too.

The CPU is not the limiting factor here but the OS limitations imposed for applications running on the system. The form factor also might be great for many different scenarios, but for classic desktop usage an iPad will always be inferior. Yes, theoretically you could connect an iPad to an external monitor, plug in a mouse and a keyboard and have a desktop kind of system, but that wouldn't solve the OS issues. The iPad has a long way to go and in the meantime people are buying more Macs again..
Meaning you stated ipad won’t be because of efficiency’s and battery life yet a MacBook Air has a a battery. It’s the same imo. They don’t want to do it because they want to separate products plain and simple greed

how do you even edit video on an ipad? with your finger trying to cut the timeline? sounds annoying. I have the 16" M1P and unless Apple gives me a 12" M2 MacBook to be productive on the go, Im not interested in any additional products. the Air is just not right. I would say the iPad mini is probably their best mobile product because you can put it in your pocket and type with both thumbs vertically. Come on Apple give me a reason to buy an additional MacBook to supplement the 16"
when I was selling my 2017 12" with hopes for an M1 release, it felt like im selling the jewelry my parents gave me as a child. But I knew it was time to let go and move on. That money can be used for future practical use. Apple give me the 12" M2. I'll pay $2,000 for it jsut give it to me.

If we don't get Final Cut for the M1 iPad Pro at WWDC, I am closing the book on this experiment. I do not need an M1 to read comic books and magazines or run lowend apps that are fine on the iPhone. The $300 iPad will suffice. The iPad "Pro" will have been a failed opportunity with no pro apps. I would never recommend an iPad Pro over the M1 Macbook Air. Apple has even lost Vitticci at this point, which is amazing.
Do you selling your iPad Pro. I’ll buy it for 10 dollars seeing as you don’t want it.

For folks that have used touch devices almost as long as they’ve been alive, it’s second nature. It’s similar to those that grew up using the command line but where then introduced to the mouse. Some made the switch quickly with no issues. Some never felt comfortable working away from a command line.

I remember the first CRT I saw (and then used) - "What the heck do you do with that?". Same with the mouse. And a keyboard used for other than creating punch cards or paper tapes. Times change ...

Not really. The "iPad Evangelists" dont actually believe in what they say because the moment Apple brings in that "unecessary" feature then they go straight to praising it. Pencil. Mouse Support. Magic Keyboard. Multitasking. More RAM. M1. They change their tune every time so once we start seeing Pro Apps then they'll be right on board.

That said, it really is pretty frustrating to see the slow evolution of the iPad running alongside the M1/M2 Macs. Everything has been in place for "Pro" iPads but at this point (and pricepoint) then a Macbook is a steal.

I don't think the lack of pro app support is purposely chosen to be delayed. I would assume they would have loved to announce it this year or even last year after the introduction of M1 iPads but are just developmentally constrained for whatever reason.

well, the M1 may be useless for pro video or music but it still makes the page turns of my comics and magazines snappier. So I will keep it and use it for what it is, just an iPad.. I will probably sell it just before AppleCare expires, so check with me then.

Everyone has their taste and preference. I’ve edited 4K videos on the iPad Pro using the MK and LumaFusion.

Keyboard/Mouse. Just like any other computer.

- Keyboard (with same keyboard shortcuts)
- Mouse/Trackpad
- Touch/Pencil OPTIONS (youre not forced to use them)
- Color accurate XDR screen
- Great speakers
- USB-C
- M1 Processor
- 1lb weight
- External monitor support (iPadOS16)

Im not sure why the iPad Pro is viewed as inferior to a computer but these things EXCEED the systems most people edit on. And with upcoming improvements to the file system and external monitor support then this could very easily be a solid portable video editing Powerhouse. (Pending Apple actually taps into its Pro Video/Photo roots and gives us a iPad versions of Final Cut and Aperture. Its just embarrassing for Apple to allow Photos and iMovie to be their first party examples of iPad Editing Software)

Exactly! I feel the majority still have in their head that tablet=media consumption, since sure that is what the majority uses it fore because the barrier of tablets need to finally be broken. Many people do not even use laptops anymore, my wife doesn't own one (she may use mine rarely to print something because I have a old printer with no airprint) as she can do everything she needs on the phone which if we needed to print more we would get a new printer with the ability to easily print from the iPhone. I feel the majority of people still own laptops because well why would they just toss them and just in case scenarios, but daily or even weekly use (I know Covid kind of changed that) is minimal.

The tablet can eventually be what the PC market used to be for the majority, I am not saying that will be the case for everyone of course designers, programmers, video editors, etc. will need larger builds and Macs/PCs to handle, but the iPad having the M1 and effective cooling and battery life proves that these slabs of tech are more than just Netflix watching devices. Tablets can replace the the common laptop the biggest hurdle is the handling of multitasking and some "pro" apps which really just needs to be somewhat stripped down versions of the desktop one. Just look at what Adobe did with Lightroom and Photoshop for the iPad, it started out bare bones and now you can do so much just on a tablet and it did take a few years, but it started bare and I think that is what the majority of us is asking for the iPad

They MUST think that way. Otherwise there’s this new big thing happening that they’re not a part of. They feel like AppleII folks that were clueless about the Mac and are assuring themselves that the new thing is nothing but a toy.

I view "tablets will eventually replace PCs/laptops" the same way as "Apple is doomed!"

It's never going to happen. The ergonomics and software are just too different. Moreover, not everyone is rich enough to buy both a tablet and laptop. If they have to choose one, it would most likely be a laptop.

Apple themselves don't help the case of the iPad when they have such fantastic laptops.

This statement is very true

I thought it was a "closed" experiment for you.

That is what I am talking about, tablets need to make a slight switch the power in the iPads obviously have the power and they are limited by software. It wasn't long ago our cell phones were limited to calls/text and now look at what we can do and all that was from software/hardware changes. Tablets have the hardware because of detachable keyboards/trackpads, mice, external display so now we are just missing the software.

and I do not understand the "not everyone is rich enough to buy both a tablet and laptop" the point I was trying to make is that tablets should/need to replace the common PC and you can get a brand new capable tablet/iPad for a few hundred dollars or a plenty capable one that is used just as you would a PC the only thing that is probably cheaper is a dirt cheap Chromebook that any recent iPad would probably blow it out performance wise
