I just edited a video in iMovie on my M1 iPad the other day. iMovie kept having hiccups, especially when scrubbing through the timeline. On top of that, it wouldn't let me edit titles for a while, and I had to kill the app and go back in to it. Wasn't really a "pro" experience.

how do you even edit video on an ipad? with your finger trying to cut the timeline? sounds annoying. I have the 16" M1P and unless Apple gives me a 12" M2 MacBook to be productive on the go, Im not interested in any additional products. the Air is just not right. I would say the iPad mini is probably their best mobile product because you can put it in your pocket and type with both thumbs vertically. Come on Apple give me a reason to buy an additional MacBook to supplement the 16"
when I was selling my 2017 12" with hopes for an M1 release, it felt like im selling the jewelry my parents gave me as a child. But I knew it was time to let go and move on. That money can be used for future practical use. Apple give me the 12" M2. I'll pay $2,000 for it jsut give it to me.
Why isn’t the M1 MacBook Air not right? Too big? I find it ultra portable. I prefer to take it with me vs my M1 12.9 iPad/Magic Keyboard combo due to weight and battery life.

I use the Apple Pencil when editing video using LumaFusion on my iPad. Works great.

I thought it was a "closed" experiment for you.

trade in value 256gb cellular pro is $500.. a new lowend ipad is $309. so yeah the experiment of it doing much more than the lowend is over. but I will stilll use it as I was dumb enough to buy it. Im not giving apple any more ipad money for a long while

Well, your device has lots of new features coming for it. Might I suggest you wait till then to finally pass judgement?

thinking of the future is what got me into this mess 😀

I don't really need a Weather app or overlapped obscured windows on my 11 inch device..

What about Stage Manager? Normally I'd say don't buy a product for what it could be as we don't know what software updates can happen, but right now we have an idea of what's coming.

I view "tablets will eventually replace PCs/laptops" the same way as "Apple is doomed!"

It's never going to happen. The ergonomics and software are just too different. Moreover, not everyone is rich enough to buy both a tablet and laptop. If they have to choose one, it would most likely be a laptop.
No, it’s more like “Laptops will replace desktops” which, across the broader market, they have. There are still places where desktops remain a desired option, but laptops have been outselling desktops for years and that trend looks to continue. Just like Apple’s iPads outsell Apple’s computers 2 to 1.

True, then again, the iPad was never meant for laptop replacement, but as an aide.
Well, i have no needs for a macbook in my life away from work. So i got an ipad pro m1. It covers all my needs like emails, browsing, shopping and social media. I use it as a central controller for roon and tidal, watching videos, gaming on stadia, and for drawing with the pencil, editing pictures…ect. It would be even a cooler soin with ipad os16. I hope…

What can a laptop do that an iPad can't?
What can an iPad do that a laptop can't?

Not arguing so please feel free to correct me. But if you ask these two basic questions then, isn't a fully accessorized iPad capable of doing more than a laptop?

I used to say that the iPad works best if viewed as a Mac accessory/companion. But now the iPad has similar laptop keyboard, mouse, thunderbolt, high end screen, M1, RAM and external drive support. So when you add in unique features like touch, pencil support and a modular design then what exactly is it that would designate the iPad to NOT be equal or greater than most laptops? (My answer would be the lack of Apple effort and first party software.)

Really like my iPad Pro but it can't -

Have full-up MS Office
Have full-up Lightroom & Photoshop
Format drives
Update data & f/w on USB devices
Read/write DVDs & CDs (Yes, I still need this)
Manage my tens of thousands of photos on my NAS

My laptop can do all of these.

And to that I add mine:
Have background Dropbox and Onedrive Sync.
Be able to run some Chrome extensions I need for work
Be able to support more than 1 external monitor (wired or wirelessly)
Run the desktop version of Whatsapp
And last but not list, run some Windows-only software I need for work.
All my Windows and MacOS devices can do that (Macs can do the last via Parallels)

You can have more than one cloud storage.

And Safari supports extensions now.

Blame Chrome and Firefox for not supporting extensions.

Like I said, it's not a laptop and you figured it out it works wonders as a companion device.

Cloud storage: it does not work on iPad with the file app. When I want to attach files to my email from my dropbox it does not work (it hangs). The link between Dropbox and the file app is still half broken. Maybe it works with iCloud but I am not in the Apple ecosystem.
Safari does not have the extensions that I need (it's not even close to Chrome in terms of extensions).
I don't care who is to blame.
I couldn't care less about either Apple, Chrome, Google, Samsung or Microsoft.
I need my tools to work, and while I can and do many things on iPad, some important things are not possible

With the listed starting specs (M2 SoC, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD) for the rumored 14.1" iPad Pro tablet, it really seems an indicator of Apple bringing their Pro apps to iPadOS (Mn-series SoCs only, thx...) in the near(ish) future...?

Honestly Final cut and Logic (with a subscription model, something like $99 per year per app) is not a big deal for most people. And if it's a Lite version of those apps à la Microsoft/Adobe it's every a worse deal. I don't think it will change much. But a 14.1 does not need pro apps to sell. Many people are waiting for such a device, just like they were waiting for the 12.9 before it came out in 2015

Here's a list of the things I did yesterday on MacOS that a £2500 range-topping iPad Pro and keyboard cannot do:
  • Chilled out watching a restoration YT video on silent while listening to Apple Music.
  • Formatted an attached hard drive: you know, that basic thing you could do in MS DOS 40 years ago.
  • Linked the Music, iMovie and Photos apps to libraries on a client's external drive and updated them.
  • Configured its audio input and output to use multiple devices (one for input, another for output).
  • Burned a CD for one of my clients.
  • Updated the songs on another client's iPod Classic upon which she stores all her backing tracks (club singer).

For me it is in the really simple things:

1. Typing in bed. Typing on screen keyboard is slow and inefficient. As iPad is top heavy using it with keyboard in the bed is very uncomfortable for me. Laptop on the other hand - far more stable.
2. Adding second display and watching movie on the second display while chatting with friends.
3. Listening to Youtube music while browsing site (with adds and audio that does not stop the youtube music) without paying youtube subscription

There are of course things that the iPad can do and the laptop can't - everything around the pencil. So yes for me the iPad is a companion to my laptop, but it won't replace it anytime soon. Frankly I enjoy more to type and browse on my laptop.

Windows laptops can do basically everything an iPad can do (how well or how much people like/dislike Windows here on Macrumors is another story...)

Will you get one @Digitalguy?

I’d be interested but that does mean getting the magic keyboard and such again too. May wait for Gen 2 for that device.
Absolutely, on launch, just like I did with the 2015 iPad pro and with the 2022 Tab S8 Ultra. Both were sizes / form factors I had been waiting for a while so I got them as soon as I could. Instead I got the 2018 pro and 2021 pro later, either on sale or refurbished, since they were an improvements (a huge one for the 2018 one, much bigger than from 2018 to M1) on an existing size.
I might not buy the MK immediately just like I didn't for all my iPads (I generally wait for sales for accessories).
The question is more which storage/RAM configuration will I pick (I think I'll go with 16GB RAM or maybe even 24 if the option is offered, unless the price difference is huge)
This time I am tempted to go with the white keyboard, so I'll probably get the silver iPad.
I might save on the Pencil instead, I already have 3 (one for each, 2018 12.9, 2018 11in and M1 12.), so I think I have enough pencils 2.
Ah and I'll get the 5G version (man, I am going to beat my record of how much money I'll have spend on a single device 😅 for now the record is a 2006 laptop bought for $2500....)
By the way I have no intention of selling any of my pros (I have different uses for all of them, including as monitors, and the older ones are not worth selling anyway), so this one will add to the team... 😁

I'm curious... how do you balance your usages with the 2022 Tab S8 Ultra and 2021 iPad Pro? Is it a matter of which one that needs to be charged?
