BTW, this is what I have done today alone:

1. Erase and install of OS X via disks included with computer for HDD installed in the lower “B” slot. The HDD installed in the “A” slot at this time had all of my software and 10.4.6 with all software updates installed. Install crashed at the end of second DVD and computer had to be shut down via the power button.
2. Removed primary HDD from the upper “A” slot and replaced it with the newly formatted (erase and install) drive that previously occupied the lower “B” slot.
3. Started computer, entered basic information and allowed wireless keyboard and mouse to pair. Did not set up AirPort at this time.
4. Attempted sleep with DVI connected only. Left machine sleep automatically for one hour, and then restarted successfully.
5. Plugged in USB 2.0 cable from Apple Cinema Display into main I/O in the back of the computer. Let machine sleep automatically for one hour, and then restarted successfully.
6. Plugged in FireWire cable from Apple Cinema Display into main I/O in the back of the computer. Let machine sleep automatically for one hour, and then restarted successfully.
7. Plugged in iSight cable and Mighty Mouse into Apple Cinema Display. Let machine sleep automatically for one hour, and then restarted successfully.
8. Plugged in FireWire 800 cable from external HDD (powered on) into main I/O in the back of the computer. Let machine sleep automatically for one hour, and then restarted successfully.
9. Plugged in USB 2.0 cable from iPod nano into main I/O in the back of the computer. Let machine sleep automatically for one hour, and then restarted successfully.
10. Plugged in FireWire cable attached to iPod photo and FireWire cable from CompactFlash card reader into FireWire PCI card. Let machine sleep automatically for one hour, and then restarted successfully.
11. Computer not making POST “gong” on restart. Reset PRAM successfully.
12. Shut down computer and reset SMU. Removed all RAM except innermost two slots.
13. Restarted computer and allowed it to sleep automatically for 45 minutes. Woke from sleep successfully.
14. Shut down and remove first pair of DIMMS and replace with next pair. Let computer sleep automatically and wake after 45 minutes.
15. Shut down and remove first pair of DIMMS and replace with next pair. Let computer sleep automatically and wake after 45 minutes.
16. Shut down and remove first pair of DIMMS and replace with next pair. Let computer sleep automatically and wake after 45 minutes.
17. Reinstalled all RAM and ran Memory Test.

I'll continue bright and earfly tomorrow.

Thanks for letting me bitch. :D

I went over to the Apple Forums tonight and it is LITTERED with similar complaints.

Ok another stupid random thing.

Was this happening when you had the two 20" ACDs connected instead of the 30"?

Sorry for all the stupid questions.

Also have you tried to use regular keyboard and mouse?

Hey iGary, if you are looking for a 6800 to replace the x800 with, I have a PCIe 6800 Ultra 256 mb card laying around.

Crucial RAM

iGary,

Don't rule out the possibility of the Crucial RAM being bad. Even though they have a great reputation, they still ship bad RAM. I added some crucial RAM to my iBook and had trouble with periodic freezes and kernel panics. Pain in the as? to diagnose!

The Apple Hardware Diagnostic disc didn't find the problem. I ran it looping for 24 hours+ and it still said my memory passed. Don't put much stock into the Apple Hardware Test. My iBook was in the Apple Certified repair shop for over a week and they couldn't find the problem. They replaced the hard drive, etc.

It turns out that I read on a forum to remove all aftermarket RAM before you take it in for repair. I called up the Repair shop and told them to remove the Crucial RAM, and the iBook stopped freezing. It was the Crucial RAM after all.

The good part of this situation was that Crucial took back the RAM without question. They sent me a new stick in the mail quickly, so at least their customer service is good.

Best of luck!

Yep it was a Belkin.

Easiest way to is to do a clean install on a Firewire external drive and boot it from that. Even then if they say it is a software issue ... i guess you can ask them to fix the software as ...software help is also covered in the darn warranty!

Yeah, the problem is I have 8 gigs of it. There is no real way to isolate it. I am sleepign each matched pair for 45 minutes as we speak to try and isolate that.

I call up Crucial and tell them I have 8 gigs of bad RAM, they'll tell me to fly a kite.

I am trying it with Apple RAM tomorrow.

Oh, an awesome new discovery!!!

Since they had me play Chinese fire drill with 8GB of RAM, I noticed that they forgot to install a screw on top of the cooling unit and several of the cooling fins on the radiator are bent (the new radiator is part ofthe processor repair).

Oh joy, more AppleCare talk today.

Wow, iGary. This is truly within the realm of lunacy now. I think you should start talking replacement.

Me too. I got my very first Mac, a Performa 630, and my second, a PM7100/66, replaced after AppleCare screwed up the repairs. I even got an upgrade the second time to a 7100/80. I'd go for it.

Oh believe me, I am on the phone at 9 a.m. shape with AppleCare about their repair.

I'm resolving this today. Period. If that means they take the unit and replace the logic board and PMU on speculation, then fine. i wan't something that works.

And I'm not taking this "software issue" BS, either.

Haha I'm sorry, but your run around with AppleCare just reminds me of my MBP stuff I had to deal with. Maybe we all seem to be getting connected to the same idiot or something?

Anywho, good luck iGary! You should get a major replacement for that garbage.

Dont leave with out a quad

Trouble is, he's got 8gb ram invested in the dual 2.7 that won't work in a quad. Ooops. :(

On the upside, you could put 16gb in a quad if you got one, iGary. :)

OK - Honest opinion...

Is it fair for Apple to say that a "third-party" software is to blame?

I mean my iBook runs the same stuff perfectly...

No, I think it's got past that point. On the basis of your (very good) letter, you have every right to demand a new machine. You said that the Apple Store guy did get it to misbehave after leaving it on all day, so you do have some evidence. I'd say Apple should take it on the chin at this point, and do the right thing.

Absolutely not. Truth be told, Apple's technicians likely have no clue what the trouble is with your PM, or even a remote idea. So of course they give you the standard "it's somebody else's fault."

Ah yes, how could I have forgotten. The place where people like to go and pay above-retail prices. ;)

It's a pity. I used to really like that place.
