As per vote, a third of members aren’t concerned, as any sensible person shouldn’t be.

Yet, as per the internet, the highly vocal minority must have their ignoRANT views spammed again & again, despite the fact they & we know minds won’t be changed.

In comparison to the pop camera. Thicker I guess? But is that really the argument we are going with why a notch is better?
[doublepost=1558901674][/doublepost]
Makes plenty of sense as the electronics are in the notch and not in the bezels. But it's still not a good enough answer as the oneplus "face id" is not as advanced as "face id".

How does a pop-up camera prevent spyware intrusions? That makes no sense and is not even accurate. Once spyware hits your phone (if in fact it does), microphone and every camera is vulnerable. And how do you know when the pop-up camera is in use, the spyware isn't siphoning the bits somewhere else.

Citation please for the end-to-end timings.

Do you have a citation for this subjective opinion? Or is it just that...an opinion. Additionally, I invite anyone who thinks apple is technically incompetent, to design and release an "airpower" type of device. I mean, it must be a piece of cake for a technically competent engineer or (engineering department) to tackle.
1. Not sure how it makes sense since the OP7 andcthe XS max are close in dimensions...a wash when you consider the op7 pro has a slightly bigger screen.

2. You are the one that claimed the op7 pro pop up cam makes it easier to covertly spy...how? If the camera is on while it's not popped up it's just going to be seeing pitch black, vs the iPhone you would have no idea if it's on or not...so please do explain.

More of a host of unfounded statements. Empty rhetoric.

  • "Makes plenty of sense as the electronics are in the notch and not in the bezels. But it's still not a good enough answer as the oneplus "face id" is not as advanced as "face id"." Huh?
  • The popup camera is retracted when not in use, and sits within metal and plastic housing along with behind the screen housing. The camera is therefore blocked. When it's in use, you'll see it popped up. The fact that this is still a discussion point with you is telling...
  • In relation to a smartphone with an edge-to-edge screen and popup camera: "Vivo is currently at the peak of its innovation. The Chinese smartphone company recently launched the Vivo NEX, which is one of the first smartphones to feature a truly bezel less display and a pop-up camera module. Now, the company has developed a new face identification technology that can scan up to 10 times more sensor points than FaceID on the Apple iPhone X."
  • Airpower:
  • Apple said in an emailed statement that AirPower just didn't meet its high standards:

"After much effort, we’ve concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have cancelled the project. We apologize to those customers who were looking forward to this launch. We continue to believe that the future is wireless and are committed to push the wireless experience forward,” said Dan Riccio, Apple's senior vice president of hardware engineering, in a statement." https://www.pocket-lint.com/phones/news/apple/142203-apple-airpower

Overall, Apple has locked itself into a notch design pattern and at this point, there doesn't seem to be much going on there (no new interesting patents I'm aware of). If Apple really liked the notch and thought it was necessary and a good design, you'd see it on its watch, MacBook Pros, MacBooks, MacBook Airs, and iPads. But you don't, and you won't. The newly redesigned iPad Pro launched not long after the first notch product (iPhone X). Apple had every opportunity to put a notch on it, but didn't need to because the bezels were big enough to place the sensors in. The notch is nothing more than a superfluous wart that is a consequence of Apple being unable to innovate a solution otherwise.

All I am Seeing is a couple of people that don’t want to buy an iPhone with a notch. No problem with that.
However the poll you included indicates most people don’t care if the notch is there or not.
You all are arguing about spyware on the front facing camera (lol, something that hasn’t actually happened to an iPhone) and FaceID sensors.

Well you both forget the big thing the notch includes, the SPEAKER. It’s to big to be in the bezel so where else can it go? That’s right, that notch is the perfect place for it.

Now, I’m sure one day the notch will be gone, but for now it’s fine.

Most of this is hyperbole and opinions given your own poll shows the notch way ahead; despite your opinions to the contrary.

You said Apple was incompetent https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...e-notch-is-gone.2178645/page-14#post-27393484 So I asked for a citation. And got an answer that said the airpower didn't meet apples high standards. That's a deflection.

In the conspiracy theory case about spyware, the back-camera nor the mic are not blocked. Enough for the determined hacker to get some information.

As far as face id, you gonna cite every manufacturer? Because no one has a complete package like Apple because Android is so fragmented? And no one knows about face id 2. Although I can see the handwriting on the wall about Apple copying face id 2, when another manufacturer finally after a two year lead releases a viable package. You think apple is standing still?

You're right, the iPhone xs only has a dual lens vs triple lens on the op7 pro. So yeah IRS a waah considering the xs max does less.

Still waiting on your explanation how the pop up camera makes it easier to covertly spy.

Lol excuses when you see the evidence. How unfortunate. So you're wrong about the pop up camera being slower.

Not to mention the op7 is faster in every speed test...but you're going to find an excuse..."but benchmarks". You can continue running benchmarks while op7 users get daily tasks done faster.

  • No, it is not hyperbole and opinions. You have now erected a massive strawman. You have failed to address literally every single thing that has been discussed that is objective about this topic.
  • Yes, I said Apple was and is incompetent regarding the notch. And I'll say it again: they're incompetent. The AirPower mat is one example of their incompetence. It's a rare situation and one where Apple has publicly admitted they couldn't get it done. The AirPower mat may actually ship, at some point. The fact that they announced it, even printed it on AirPod boxes, etc. and then failed to ship shows their incompetence. Then there's the new MBP butterfly keyboards. The Mac Pros that aren't upgraded for years. The multiple products that shipped significantly late or had significant stock shortages that missed holiday seasons under Cook. Apple does many things well, but not this.
  • You have failed to address spyware in the front-facing camera. Period. Failed. The notch-based camera does nothing for such spyware and you have erected yet another strawman talking about back-facing cameras and microphones. The popup camera solves the problem of spyware accessing the front-facing camera and recording you. No argument. No further discussion needed. Stop.
  • FaceID: Another strawman. You fail to address the innovation with other phones (e.g., VIVO NEX) that have advanced FaceID with popup cameras and edge-to-edge screens. And this isn't about the HTC One Plus Pro 7. That is one of many phones. The VIVO NEX, according to some press, has better FaceID than the iPhone. And there will be more edge-to-edge phones with popup cameras and FaceID coming.

The XS max does take better pictures most of the time, can't argue there.

You said "Problems the notch solves that the pop-up creates:
- no moving parts that can get jammed/broken and have debris in the mechanism
- smaller form factor
- distinctive stylish, look
- able to covertly spy
- don't have to wait for pop up"

Still waiting on your explanation how the pop up create the problem of covertly spying.

Continue with your benchmarks while the op7 crush the xs max in daily task. You remind me of those guys with their 1200 hp hellcat boasting when they get spanked by the McLaren 720s. You can have all the horsepower. I'll continue to beat you in real world instead of the dyno.

The thread poll disagrees with you "opinions". Poll voters would rather have the notch. That's not a straw-man, that is a fact. But okay, "extreme hyperbole" vs "massive strawman". You dislike the notch, I dislike pop-up cameras and pop-up bezels. But okay Vivo nex has better facial recognition, they should be as apple is working with a gen 1 product.

The answer is in the same realm as the poster who suggested the notch aids spyware hacked phones, because you can't tell if the front camera is active. That response was in the "hyperbole zone".

At any rate enjoy your theoretical o7. Must be hard without wireless charging and sd cards. /s

This whole thread seems like another "Android phone vs iPhone" opinion thread. The notch doesn't get in the way of any app, website, or videos I watch on my phone. That's just me of course. This being said it's literally impossible to make something that everyone likes. Apple can only make a product that will be accepted by the majority of its customer base.

Could they have made a pop up camera with added thickness and mechanical complications? Sure it's possible. Could they have cut a hole in the screen like the S10? Maybe they could have removed the selfie camera altogether. From this very poll an overwhelming majority stated they would buy an iPhone with a notch.

Perhaps a better question for a future poll would be would you prefer the notch, a lager bezel on top like the old iPhones, a hole without FaceID like the S10, or mechanical pop up (like the OnePlus 7 Pro).

It was probably inevitable that this thread would devolve into comparing minutia. However the way the poll was structured, the majority said they would buy a phone with a notch. Love the notch, hate the notch. All good. No manufacturer will please everybody.

You really are trolling. No, the poll does not imply people would rather have the notch. Once again erroneous. Almost everything you say is factually incorrect and erroneous.

Now, you say the Vivo NEX may have as good or better FaceID than the iPhone, and that they should because Apple’s is gen 1? I mean you are something. You realize Apple is on gen 2, and Vivo is on gen 1 in relation to the popup camera. LOL.

The notch actually does get in the way of some apps, websites, or videos watched on the phone. Primarily in landscape: websites have large white banding deadspace imposed on each side; full bleed videos will have the notch cover content; apps like games in landscape will also have content covered.

And, just in some Apps like maps in portrait, the top of the screen will be blurred creating deadspace because the notch is in the way and they don’t want it to cover content. I could go on...

You're right, the poll discusses purchases not preferences. However, if the poll were to read the same except substitute pop-up camera, my answer would be no. Polling is an art however, you have to ask the right question and you are arguing preferences in the thread vs purchases in the poll.

Now I encourage to re-read some of the past threads, so there is an understanding of who said what. LOL is right.

edit: I personally have no issues with the notch. Some of the negatives you listed against the notch while may be technically accurate, none of them are issues for me as others have stated as well no issues for them. Which is why I say what is a fact is a fact, but there are opinions above and beyond those facts.

Lol. You continually have stated erroneous things, and continue to argue about nothing. You add no value.

The poll does not show that "most people don't care if the notch is there or not". That is your own erroneous claim.

The notch is also gone: that day is here with devices like the VIVO NEX, OnePlus 7 Pro, etc. Just not for Apple.

The poll that you posted says 73% of respondents literally would buy the next phone even if it still has a notch.

Vivo Nex, a unpolished phone, the OnePlus Pro7 with facial recognition based on a breakable camera. Facial recognition that isn’t good enough for payments, but the fingerprint reader is easily fooled.
Those phone may have no notch, but they have major sacrifices.

Yes, the poll says that. What is your point?

And what do you mean an "unpolished phone"? And what do you mean based on a breakable camera.

The poll is just two answers and people seem to assume it means hate the notch or love the notch which it doesn’t. I voted to buy an iPhone with it despite thinking it looks rather crap. Aesthetics aren’t the top priority for me though and I find it amusing why so many of you here are arguing with the assumption your own opinion is the correct answer. Does it really make any difference to anybody else?

Useless post. Did you know water is wet?

You realize this is an open forum on the Internet that is about a large technology company? You also realize that this forum is broken out into different subtopics associated with products. You also realize that this forum area is about all things iPhone.

We’re here to troubleshoot. To talk about what we like and not like. About Apple’s design and engineering decisions. About the future. Some of us are even software professionals.

You realize that you simply don’t have to post useless things and hijack threads: case closed.

Hilarious. You actually kind of get it. That’s the point. We really don’t know what people think when they buy a product. My suspicion is that many people actually don’t like the notch but accept it because 1. They’re bought into Apple’s ecosystem. 2. There are several other aspects of the iPhone that are good. 3. The alternative is horrible: Android.

At any rate, the poll neither asks nor concludes as to liking or disliking the notch.

IMHO, as long as nobody forces to buy something they don't want, don't buy, case closed

Yup. That’s how consumer products work, they can’t be ‘forcing’ anyone for anything, not when you have selective choice, but it doesn’t change the success the iPhone is today and what it will continue to be in the future because of what one thread says.
