Given the choice between a notch or chin, I would always pick the notch.

Given the reality of the alternative solution currently available, a chin and a curved display versus a notch and a flat display, I would pick the notch and a flat display every time.

Yes, the poll says that. What is your point?

And what do you mean an "unpolished phone"? And what do you mean based on a breakable camera.

Your premise is wrong. You conclude the notch is a terrible terrible thing and no one likes it and it should die. But the poll should most people will deal with it. I’m personally notch agnostic. I don’t care it’s there or not. Most people are at the same place.
The only thing I’m not a fan of is the fact I can’t see the battery percentage without doing the drop down.

The camera pops out, that’s very breakable. Not to mention just wait till dirt and sand and lint starts collecting in the mechanism. I’ve had several phones with sliding features, none turned out good after a few month of being pocketed.

I 100% agree. Take the notch away and the small sections of screen on each side of the notch are gone. And more then likely, the bottom of the phone will be thickened to match the top so it’s symmetrical. We can debate if Samsung hold punch solution is a good idea or not, but having a physical camera that goes in an out is just lazy engineering that is a sign of not caring about the consumer. They purposely included a camera that can and will break and fail.

You opened the thread with a poll and your first post basically says the notch is terrible and needs to die quickly - what do you think?

I’d say you pretty unequivocally asked whether people like the notch.

I don’t and can’t answer for anyone but myself.

Exactly.
Not only that but iPhone users only have the notch.
Galaxy users have to contend with a hole punch, a chin and curved displays, one plus 7 pro users have to compromise with a chin, a pop up camera and curved displays.

Btw the pop up camera is already malfunctioning, it seems to be popping up while in users pockets. Sounds incredibly annoying to go through.

Not exactly a direct one-for-one comparison with regards to mechanisms, but look at what's become of the Galaxy Fold, and that hasn't even made it into anyone's pockets or purses yet. The potential of *something* happening because of a moving part is what is of concern, even if the chance were miniscule. No moving part means there's absolutely no concern.

I wouldn't necessarily agree with a pop up module, but if Apple did eventually go that route, I would still probably buy it for two reasons. One, it's an iPhone, and I love the seamless usability across their products. Two, if anyone could "perfect" a pop up module, I would hope it would be them. Then again they can't seem to get a keyboard right so who knows :D

I didn’t say you did or could. You claimed not to have asked whether others like or dislike the notch, but you clearly did in your opening post.

Strawman. The poll stands, and the poll does not ask whether a person likes or dislikes the notch.

Strawman. The chin on the One Plus 7 Pro is a small bezel and not much bigger than the top bezel. This is not a compromise. A compromise is a notch that disrupts the entire top portion of the iPhone.

And as for a malfunctioning popup camera: what is the percentage of popup cameras that have failed vs. units sold? How many people per 1000 does the popup camera pop out on in their pocket? What is the cause of the popup camera popping up in affected Users' pockets?

straw man? How does that apply here? I don’t believe your using that term correctly.

Yes exactly the chin is rather distracting on the OnePlus 7 and good point the chin is larger than the top bezel which does make it look uneven. In addition, the annoying curved display, with its false touches and glare, and lopsided bezels on each side of the phone, the one plus 7 is just a terribly designed phone and overpriced.

That’s a compromise a lot of iPhone owners aren’t willing to make, especially since one plus has increased prices as well, what are they $900 now?

The chin and the curved display is too much of a compromise compared to the notch with a flat display and No chin on the iPhone.

I’m sure one plus is trying to figure that out.

There are so many issues going on with the one plus 7.
Ghost Touch Issue on 3rd party Applications, battery drain and Heating issue, the camera pops up even if the Device is the pocket, call issues on the Verizon network.

Maybe one plus will get it right next year.

I can't believe we have PAGES of talk about a popup camera. Show me the popup camera that houses ALL the technology currently housed in the notch and we can have a conversation. Otherwise this is just a bunch of fantasy talk. Even if they did manage to cram it all into a popup camera, no thanks. That would be hideous in my opinion and I wouldn't own one. I'd take the notch every day of the week over a popup camera.

The notch looks hideous taking up fully viewable display.
I won’t be purchasing another Apple device until removed.
I’m hopeful it will be removed in 12 release & they scrap ugly 11 camera design.

I went from the 8+ to the XR and I don't even notice the notch.
much rather have the notch than a chin or bezel.

I went from Galaxy S9 to XR.
Apple Notch pretty much wipes out status bar indicators.
Lossing track of notifications etc @ glance on home screen & during app open is a major step back reminding me of old Palm Smart devices from many years ago.
Other then that , I’m XR happy but was pretty envious of brothers new galaxy S 10 E this weekend.
Fully viewable display has zero negative & S10 wireless share charge feature is very cool.
The Fix - Cram iOS & its support in S10 hardware.

Why should anyone "show you ALL the technology currently housed in the notch"?

And what is so "hideous".

I swear 9/10 people who use the term "Strawman" don't know what it means

Why swear?

First, I know what a strawman is, and you, along with others, constantly erect them.

A strawman is a form of argument and an informal fallacy based on giving the impression of refuting an opponent's argument, while actually refuting an argument that was not presented by that opponent.

Now, onto your comments:

  • Chin, distracting, bigger size than top on the OnePlus 7 Pro. First, this thread is NOT about this phone. Period. Stop. Second, your comments are absurd. The "chin" on the OnePlus 7 Pro is a small bezel. The first question for you is, what is the size difference of this bezel in terms of thickness compared to the iPhone X series? I am 99.9% certain you don't know the answer.

  • Defeating yourself: you said "The chin and the curved display is too much of a compromise compared to the notch with a flat display and No chin on the iPhone." If the "chin" on the above phone is itself too much of a compromise, then the notch surely must, logically, drive you crazy because of its size and asymmetrical design. And look at the thickness of the bezel all around the iPhone! That must be too much of a compromise!

I think we should be thankful companies are still trying to innovate in a fairly stale market. Apparently 22 million less smartphones were sold in Q1 2019 compared to 2018 and its putting pressure on manufacturers to find compelling reasons to upgrade for consumers and work on being competitive on price. It’s only a good thing otherwise we’ll see more people keeping phones for 3+ years and the likes of Apple/Samsung just conceding and offering the bare minimum.

With current top-tier models having virtually no bezel at all, I think just holding the phone in your hand during use would likely block off as much of the screen as the notch does.

My work phone is a Pixel 3 XL, which also has a notch. I’m not pleased that it’s there, however I’ve found that after a week or two of use I barely noticed it.

Why should anyone "show you ALL the technology currently housed in the notch"?

Well you answered your own question.

Because of all the technology that is housed in the notch.

First, I know what a strawman is, and you, along with others, constantly erect them.

A strawman is a form of argument and an informal fallacy based on giving the impression of refuting an opponent's argument, while actually refuting an argument that was not presented by that opponent.

It’s highly inaccurate for you to label the only alternative to your argument as a strawman fallacy.

In fact your posts contains confirmation bias fallacies and observation selection fallacies, as well as others but not really the time or place .

You also keep incorrectly using the straw man fallacy. It doesn’t look like you really understand how to identify it properly.

Now, onto your comments:

  • If this thread isn’t about the phone why do you keep talking about it and bringing it up?

Once more you openly admit to the one plus having a chin and the iPhone XS does not, which is the point.

I don’t really understand what you are asking?

But that is a classic example of a strawman fallacy instead of refuting the compromises from a chin and curved display you want to talk about thickness of the bezels.

At least you can admit the one plus 7 has chin or bezel at the bottom, I guess that’s a step.

You can see for yourself its quite thick.
    53776dfaa4f54ed95cde199fda5690c2.jpg

And all that glare from the curved display in a dark room, you don’t consider glare a compromise?

    • Defeating yourself: you said "The chin and the curved display is too much of a compromise compared to the notch with a flat display and No chin on the iPhone." If the "chin" on the above phone is itself too much of a compromise, then the notch surely must, logically, drive you crazy because of its size and asymmetrical design.

    • What does defeating yourself have to do with my post. Your not making much sense.

This should be pretty simple to understand.

A flat display with a notch instead of a chin > a curved display with a chin instead of a notch

Yes a curved display has terrible glare issues and false touches, that’s the compromise.

A chin takes up more bezel compared to a notch, which allows more screen on either side of the notch, where a chin does not. That is a comprise.

      Can’t make it any simpler.

If the notch caused glare or false touches it wouldn’t drive me crazy, I just wouldn’t buy the iPhone, I wouldn’t compromise.

If your saying the notch drives you crazy by just looking at it, you might have to get some help. That’s not normal.

And look at the thickness of the bezel all around the iPhone! That must be too much of a compromise!

Sure we can talk about the thickness of the bezel if you want.

Actually all the bezels on the iPhone look uniform around the entire phone and around the notch.

That’s a great picture but your illustrating my point for me.

The one plus with all its bezels being a different size with a fat chin is quite ugly, not very uniform and visually jarring from a symmetrical or design point of view.

But it’s a cheap phone from a budget brand and currently severely overpriced. I never had high expectations from them to begin with.

Actually a compromise would be a notch AND a chin, pixel 3xl, notched Huawei phones with a chin. Etc etc.

[*]"There are so many issues going on with the one plus 7." Post all of your facts and figures to support this.

I did in the one plus thread where it belongs.
Ghost touches on third party applications, over heating and battery drain, camera popping out in people’s pocket, high pitched sound during phone calls.

If you want more details it’s all over the one plus 7 forums. Enjoy.

I don’t even see the notch anymore. Not an issue but I know it is catastrophic to others.

Apple will remove one day but not on the next run in September.

I just got my XS max recently and am debating returning. Not because the notch bothers me but I’m kinda thinking if they remove the notch in 2020 then my phone would be like a year old but be very identifiably outdated by the presence of the notch when 2020 models sport a full display. The notch doesn’t bother me or intrude “currently” however it will likely bother me a lot more when full display iPhones are hot. If that is only a year from now then I feel my max will be a significantly costly eyesore in a short space of time.

Sorry but I do not buy any phone to impress or worry about what others think.

I don’t either. I do however succumb to my inner dialogue that reinforces the worries I had before purchase that the notch and that particular design of iPhone are likely coming to the end of their lifecycle. No one wants to pay £1100+ for an end generation smartphone when the new generation is round the corner..which is exactly where I find myself. My dilemma is wether to return & use the cash for next years model. I have a few devices that would tide me over till then
