I know this is a little off topic, but are the fans audibly noticeable when just doing general productivity things like web browsing and emailing on the iMac 2020 with 5700XT?

I can perfectly understand they would kick in during intensive work like video editing and even gaming but I'm hoping not so for lighter productivity work.

To me, the fan noise has been similar to that of my old iMac. If I'm rendering some complex 3d, yeah, the fans spin up to cool things down and keep it around 100ºF.

Hello guys, i’m on the fence between ordering the 5700XT and the regular 5700 (Thanks to the glitch reported here) I’ve been looking online to find a benchmark test between these 2 graphics cards with no luck.. i figured if the differences are not severe, i would opt for the regular 5700 just to be safe.

I mainly use after effects and c4d, zbrush, blender.. if anyone has any advice please let me know!

5700XT and don’t look back. The ’glitch’ is so minor it doesnt even bother me and I’m OCD about everything. I would guess it will be fixed in software anyways. I was working on a 500MB photoshop file, rendering a 200MB vectorworks file in 3D, screen sharing, using side car, iTunes, mail, messages, safari multiple tabs and the fans didnt even kick in. This machine rocks. It’s the best performing Mac I’ve owned. A couple times a day for the briefest of milliseconds i notice what might be a flash of a 4“ white line near the cursor. Flash is too aggressive a word. It’s more like a blip.

The “glitch” is minor and this iMac is a beast of a machine. But, the smart play is to get the regular 5700.

The only time I've heard the fan in my new iMac was when I ran a 20+ minute render in Blender. Otherwise, this iMac has been silent for me.

While web browsing, email and such it's perfectly quiet. But once the fan does kick in, gosh, it will blow your hat off, so loud.

I don't have a crystal ball, but I'm willing to bet this issue is resolved soon and will be a thing of the past. That 5700 and 8 gigs of VRAM will be forever... I'm not saying it's a bad card but the reason many of us went big on this iMac is because it's the last intel iMac and needs to last us a good long time.

Well, I just got off the phone with Apple CS in UK and after an hour discussing with people at various tiers, they asked me to return my iMac for a replacement, even though they aren't able to guarantee the replacement won't exhibit these very same problems.

Btw. they just straight dismissed any similarity with the glitch discussed in this thread, saying something like "each and every case needs to be assessed individually". So no, they are not on the case and not registering any increased number of returns/reports on the 5700XT model. At least not in UK it seems :/

In all fairness, the vast majority of us aren't having the issues you described. Your machine does sound actually defective.

The glitching window corners have been confirmed by several users here and elsewhere too.

As for the regularity of the white line glitch in the subject, there are users who experience it every ~15mins, me every ~30mins and some users once in a day. I believe this *is* the same issue just perhaps a) different stage of degradation (if HW) or b) different user interaction with certain triggers (if SW).

And as for the screen tearing in Recovery mode — have you tried to go to recovery screen? Would you mind please?

That really bites that you're having graphical issues to the degree you are, the way you describe them sound like they're bad enough that the machine is not giving you a positive user experience. If I were in your shoes, I would return the machine as soon as possible and get my money back. You did say "only fools would pay full price for a defective product" and this totally sounds awful and unworkable. The usability of a machine shouldn't also rile you up to the point you describe the fans as "jfc they are loud af" either!

Don't be that fool who pays full price for what you seemingly describe as a defective product you simply aren't happy with. Speak with your wallet and get your money back from Apple, as I'm sure others in your situation would do.

Cool, would you mind trying to go to Recovery mode please and see if you can reproduce the screen tearing? Cheers

That's reassuring. Just out of curiosity, do you have the i7 or the i9 processor in your machine?

I ordered 2 identical iMacs (two weeks apart). Both had the same horizontal line issues. Are you telling me I'm that unlucky?

OK, thanks. It must be really only my unit then. This is what I see when dragging any window in Recovery Mode:
When I boot my machine in Safe Mode, dragging windows produces all sorts of graphical glitches along the sides of the windows. Any of you have that issue as well? I told Apple about that and they said that since it's in Safe Mode, lots of important stuff didn't load and that probably was causing it. Hmmmm.

Isn't tearing normal in Recovery mode since it probably doesn't have all the graphics acceleration of normal macOS?

Probably same thing as Recovery - some stuff is just not loaded.

Ah, that would actually make sense. I was able to repro the tearing on my MBP2016 Catalina Recovery just now As well. Ok, so that’s off the list now.

(But how come @PieTunes says he got no tearing in Recovery on iMac 2020! Puzzling!)

To be 100% clear, graphical glitches, tearing, stuttering etc are all to be expected in safe mode. Only generic drivers are loaded.

@shywizard, I wasn’t saying the white line is an anomaly but the rest of @airpoint’s issues seem more extreme than what any of us are noticing.

Interesting that they describe it as affecting "a handful of users," and made no mention of any of their staff experiencing it.
I'm naive, but I just don't understand how there are people not experiencing the horizontal line glitch. If it's a software issue and we are all using the same exact machine (and same operating system), then everyone with the new iMac and 5700XT should be seeing the same issue. Unless it's related to hard drive size, processor speed and amount of ram, but very doubtful.

Well, the white lines are not the easiest to spot. When this thread was started, we all kind of mentioned how we first thought we were seeing things. People hadn't noticed the rounded corner issue necessarily either. And the rounded corners issue can be reproduced simply by opening Mail or any other similarly constructed window. Personally, I do a lot of visual work every day for a living so I'm probably more likely to notice (and be annoyed by) these kinds of things. A person "reviewing" an iMac may simply not spot these issues. Most "reviews" these days seem to consist of unboxing, running some benchmarks, and parroting what others have said. Seemingly, anyway.

Apple called me again today to follow up and confirm some things about the materials I provided last week (videos, screenshots, and sysdiagnose logs).

They are gathering a lot of data from those of us having these problems. And of course it will take some time to issue a fix. Especially if they have to involve AMD. And obviously Big Sur is coming out soon so I assume they're trying to understand the implications of that, too.

I would encourage anybody here to also post in the official Apple forums. There are a handful of posts there (including mine). Because then Apple will likely contact you and you can describe your exact personal experiences to them. Collectively, that may amount to something that actually pinpoints them to the exact cause.
