Oh dear! what is this and how happened?
Have you recovered from this mess (or chess)?

It reminds me of a 48k ZX Spectrum.
Fortunately I think it is indeed software. I was playing World of Warcraft and the game froze, taking the display with it. After poking around in Console and the WoW forums it seems to be a case of WoW crashing and taking the WindowServer with it.

Powering the machine off and on resolved it. I've enabled SSH (been meaning to for a while, but keep remembering while I'm out!) so I can do a graceful restart if it happens again.

While we are waiting , what is Apple doing meanwhile ? it would be great they make a press announcement and give the potential buyer some clues if they make progress solving this problem. In 99 % of the reviews on the net no one noticed this glitch, very strange.
Yeah uh, there is no way Apple will do a press announcement.

Anyway it's scary...
At least you figured out the cause. SSH is a good solution when needed, I think, not sure, that someone has also made an app in the past for iOS to reboot your Mac in such cases.

Almost half the responders to the poll with a 5700XT on this thread have not seen the glitch.

I have had my 5700XT iMac for a couple of days. I saw two flashes in quick succession during the setup process and haven't seen anything since. I haven't responded to the poll yet because I am not sure which option to select.

I have a 5700XT and have scene the white line. Seems to always be on the same horizontal plane with the mouse pointer on screen. See the line, look left or right and there is the mouse pointer... Hope we get a resolution soon.

AMD cant get their own drivers to work on Windows properly. So I guess it's to be expected.
I have to say sometimes it goes hours without glitching

Right now Apple is actively investigating the issue. Myself and others here have been in contact with them. In fact, they called me. I have supplied logs, screenshots, and videos of the issue to them. Will be talking to them again on Monday. They would not do any kind of a public announcement until they get to the bottom of this. Even though it seems to be very obviously the 5700 XT, they still need to do their due diligence and figure out what it is exactly as that will impact production potentially. Of course all of us here would like it much better if they had discovered this issue before shipping these machines out... but.

That’s a positive! Like I mentioned to ADGrant can you also please post a comment if you do see the white line again as I’m sure we’d all be interested to know if installing the updates after the initial setup has resolved the issue.

I have been using my Mac for over two days now. I have not seen white lines since the ones I saw during setup.

Not me! This is the first time a thread I created became a sticky in almost 20 years of using forums! 😂

I’m actually very new here. I was an original member of the applenova forums and a long-time member of Appleinsider before that.

All the way to to the right on "More Space" says "looks like 3200 x 1800"
The five options are
1600x900 - scaled 3.2x
2048x1152 - scaled 2.5x
2560x1440 - scaled 2x (default)
2880x1620 - scaled 1.78x
3200x1800 - scaled 1.6x

None of them scale 1:1, if that is what you are wondering
If you want to select any resolution, including no scaling at all just option-click the scaled radio.

Yes, I also discovered option-click displays reveals the extended dynamic range option. "Secret" options.

I haven't added my vote yet because I'm unsure if I actually saw the white line of eternal doom - I may have once. i7 with 5700XT running at default display setting. If in fact I did, it was so brief it wouldn't have attracted my attention if I hadn't previously read this thread.

I will maintain my vigilance.

Just curious to know, for all of you who have this horizontal white line flicker issue... if you knew your new iMac had this problem before you ordered it, would you still have ordered it anyway?

Hey folks. I purchased two i7 + 5700XT iMacs, delivered this week.

Both have the whilte line glitch and the weird rendering on rounded corners of various applications.

@kkh – thanks for being proactive with reaching out to Apple about this. Please feel free to get in touch with me if there's anything I can do to help contribute to Apple's investigation into the issue.

I’ve seen one white line glitch since I received mine on the 28th. Didn’t see one until after I had been using it for a day.

I have postponed mine in any case. For this amount i think you have the right to insist on a flawless device. It’s like buying a Ferrari who loses now and then his enginepower for a few seconds.

It’s nothing like that at all. It’s more like the windshield wipers on your car squeaking for a second once every 10 times you drive.

I’m not going to tell anyone how they should spend their money but let’s not be drama queens about it.
