Just curious to know, for all of you who have this horizontal white line flicker issue... if you knew your new iMac had this problem before you ordered it, would you still have ordered it anyway?

Probably, the only safe alternative would have been an iMac Pro.

This was reported here while I was deciding which card to get and while I haven’t had the effect yet (that I can tell), I have no regrets. I don’t believe this is something that can’t be fixed.

Hard to say, namely because I ordered this new one the day after they were announced. No one had any benchmarks or tests or had them for any break in period so to speak, so I was just diving in sight unseen. Despite my 2017 iMac being perfectly fine, I salivated over a new one with a beefier graphics card.

Assuming I had waited and started reading reports of a random horizontal flashing white line, it would probably have given me enough pause to hold off buying it to see how the issue progressed. It's hard to judge the severity and frequency of it just by reading rather than using. But having the machine now for about 11 days and seeing the flashing white line myself, it's so sporadic that to me it's really a minor annoyance. I use my iMac maybe 8 hours a day and sometimes I see it flash once, maybe twice over that time, somedays I don't see it at all. The analogy @torifile gave is a close fit.

My return window is closing and I don't want to go through the hassle of sending back an otherwise faultless machine especially if the one minor problem can hopefully be resolved with a software fix. And in time if not, I have Apple Care, and should I need to send it in I'll have that option.

No horizontal glitches all day. Resolution change fixed it.
I wanted to mention again, it’s been several days since I switched the Display Resolution on my iMac Display from DEFAULT to 2048x1152. Still no horizontal lines using this resolution. Not the fix some of you were hoping for, but it is a temp solution that does work. Still trying to figure out if that means this is a hardware or software problem.

No way, only fools would pay full price for a defective product.

Btw, people here reporting on average twice a day flicker. For me it flickers sometimes every ~30mins, sometimes not at all for hours. Annoying AF! And it’s not only that, there are multiple rendering glitches on the iMac 2020 (none of which were present on the last year model I used):

  • intermittent white line flicker (as per thread subject)
  • window corners flickering on switching between panes
  • window corners not rendering alpha channel
  • some text fields in UI controls intermittently rendering text as if selected
  • Safari text selection rendering with pixel gaps until hovered over
  • screen tearing on window drag in Recovery mode
  • oh and the fans… jfc they are loud af

This list is only what I’ve noticed during first two days of usage. If you need a machine for more than checking your email, this Mac is not for you at the state of it right now.

Welcome to Macrumors. That sucks your new iMac is exhibiting such glaring issues. If you aren’t satisfied with your system it’s best you return it before the window closes on you so you can get your money back.

I was all ready to order the 5700XT, but have been waiting to see if some new info comes to light.
Will likely order either the regular 5700 or the XT version this week.
I am just editing 4K and the like.
6K and 8K are not likely to be part of my workflow.

Well, the consensus seems to be that this is isolated to macOS. I have no problem running this as a Windows 10 machine until Apple and AMD figure out what is going on here.

Running Windows for the long haul is a likely outcome for us intel Mac users anyway.

Seems like an extremely step. Is the flicker really bad on you Mac.

Almost all products are defective in some way. That said flickering every 30 minutes would be annoying. The window corner problem is so minor as to be not worth worrying about IMHO. The fans seem really quiet to me but then again this iMac is replacing a MacBook Pro.

What is annoying me is having to restart Finder to access my NAS. That is a known issue with Catalina though, not with this Mac in particular.

In your case I think you might be happier with an iMac Pro. Quieter fans and more mature GPU drivers.

Catalina my have its share to this kind of problems, I also noticed a white little line flashing for a while on my MBP 16" yesterday, upper left corner, just over a safari tab.

Which GPU were you using at the time?

Does the new iMac come with 10.15.6? Sounds like a driver/software issue.

Since updating my 16 inch MBP to 10.15.6 my screen dips to black when switching to the 5500M. Didn’t happen on 10.15.5.

If 10.15.5 is compatible with the 2020 iMac it would be interesting to see if it also experiences this white line issue.

I know this is a little off topic, but are the fans audibly noticeable when just doing general productivity things like web browsing and emailing on the iMac 2020 with 5700XT?

I can perfectly understand they would kick in during intensive work like video editing and even gaming but I'm hoping not so for lighter productivity work.

I think the graphical glitch survey at the top of the page is useful, but somewhat skewed by the fact that most of the visitors to this thread are most likely to be affected iMac 2020 5700XT owners searching for a solution to this issue. Although I must admit it is interesting to see a fair number of users who aren't experiencing this issue so far. Makes me wonder what's going on if this issue is not consistent across the same spec machines.

Yes, it is very infrequent and if I had not seen this forum, I probably would have thought I was seeing things in the corner of my eye occasionally !
