Wow ? that was fast! Like I feared, they most likely won’t even touch this until nearing the BS GM. ?Installed. Multiple white line issues with just Safari open.
Do you think there’s any chance they’ll release a fix for Catalina?Yeah, it's gotta be a driver issue. So, let's hope Apple can work with AMD on this to get this fixed. Or, it's a hardware problem. Who knows?
Ugh. I've added that as a note to my bug report.Corner issue still there, too. No difference, folks. Sharp corners and white lines persist in Big Sur beta 6.
Well I’d hoped that when Apple saw a handful of these machines get returned that they would get on it. Wishful thinking...losing hope.....
I hope you are right, but Apple has done crazier things. I recall a few times when a machine came out right before an OS update that had issues and Apple’s response was to update to the next OS. Kind of a crappy tactic to make the transition numbers look good don’t ya think?Well the previous version of this beta didn't even run on the 2020 iMac so we shouldn't be too surprised this version didn't fix the problem.
Also, if Apple had a fix for this issue, I am sure they would deploy a patch to Catalina, not fold it into a beta release of Big Sur.
losing hope.....
If you have friends who works for Apple developing the OS, can't you go direct to them and push this issue up the ladder?I'm not! The fact that they have been in touch with @kkh and others is actually really reassuring. In fact, I would have been surprised if a driver issue (assuming that is what this is) was fixed or updated as part of the beta for the next OS release.
I don’t know how Apple would issue a driver update — if that is the problem — but if it wasn't included as part of a point release/roll-up alongside other security or bug fixes, Apple does have a history of offering supplemental updates for specific models.
Maybe it’s because my day job is at a massive software company (not on the operating system, on the cloud stuff — but I have friends who work on the OS), but I’m pretty patient for them to investigate the issue. We get access to tons of telemetry about crashes and bugs and do a really good job (imho) of looking out for issues and trying to track down and solve problems, but it’s hard and can take time to replicate, figure out the issue, fix the issue, test to make sure the fix doesn’t cause another problem or regression, and then ship a fix. And since AMD is part of this too, it could mean coordinating with their engineers and their proceases.
I totally understand being frustrated and annoyed — but as long as Apple is talking to users and appears to be working on it in some way, I feel OK. Now, if another month goes by with no traction or movement, that’s another story. But I’m not losing hope yet.
The 5700XT machines have been in customer's hands for just over two weeks. I’m OK with giving it more time. For those that aren’t, I fully understand.
I agree with a lot of what you’re saying, but I’m still apprehensive simply because I don’t want this to be a BS fix only. I’ve seen that happen before. Forcing people not ready to break all their software compatibility to upgrade to an infant OS in order to fix a bug. Where I will give Apple some lenience however is in knowing they have to deal with AMD on this. It’s not totally in their court.I'm not! Yeah I just don’t think they’ve got a handle on this yet or done anything. I’m sure AMD had to be looped in. We can only hope Apple is pushing them to figure this out.Okay, so I looked at the driver versions. See attached. Ignore the dates. They obviously touch all files in the beta and set them to 1/1/2010.
Anything AMD related that is loaded:
Big Sur: 4.0.36
Catalina 10.15.6: 3.10.16
But if those version numbers are to be believed, BS beta 6 has newer drivers. Actually a considerable jump in numbers. But the issues persist. Are these supposed to address issues, as determined by Apple and AMD? Are these what they consider 100% compatible drivers since they waited until beta 6 to say it's compatible with the machines we have?Yeah I just don’t think they’ve got a handle on this yet or done anything. I honestly have no clue. But part of me thinks they simply change version numbers with each revision. I could be totally wrong. But if those version numbers are to be believed, BS beta 6 has newer drivers. Actually a considerable jump in numbers. But the issues persist. Oh I’m positive they know. They’re just playing the typical Apple silence card. It’s extremely frustrating and disappointing. A little transparency would go a long way with that company!I'd be surprised if Apple doesn't know about this issue by now, as it's now being picked up as a news item on some of the popular tech news websites. Either that, or the entire Apple team works inside a securely-enclosed bubble environment that has no connection to the outside world what-so-ever.
KKH, are you saying the white line issue is worse??Installed. Multiple white line issues with just Safari open.
I had previously written (there are so many posts, I can't even find it) that I didn't think the white horizontal line was showing up when I was remotely viewing my work PC desktop. I use Microsoft Remote Desktop from my iMac to connect to my work PC. But yesterday, I'm pretty sure I saw a quick flash of lighting while viewing my work PC desktop. So scratch my prior theory on that.
