Exactly the same for me. Stuck here for about 20-30 mins and no progress yet. I’m guessing it’s frozen, but going to leave another half an hour and see...
Ended up restarting the machine. Looking at the Beta APFS volume I created, nothing got installed. It's just the standard installer files and nothing else. Or so it seems. Let me know what your experience ends up being.

Yep, same. I rebooted in verbose mode just to see if there was a specific error. It hangs very early on during boot up, see picture:

Soz guys, I got tired and decided to erase the whole thing and pack it up in box for collection.... hopefully tjramage will satisfy us all!

I thought the failed installation had something to do with the extra security that comes with the T2 chip, but that doesn't seem to be the culprit either. Assuming it is not compatible. We did sort of laugh at what seemed like a typo in their release notes... mixing up beta 6 and beta 7 verbiage. Let's see what @tjramage says.

I don’t blame you. Here you guys are working for Apple, yet paying them. How’s that for irony?! It’s become glaringly obvious to me that ‘we’ are now Apple’s QC and beta team. The problem is we work for free. 🧐

(Had some issues with this thread not updating.)

I guess we've then collectively figured out that Big Sur does not want to install on these machines. Yet. I was hoping that by doing this test install we could've determined if Big Sur will be "the fix" or not. Of course driver updates and such could also be very last minute before Big Sur officially comes out... so, not something we would know 100% today. Also, I would’ve tested what software (audio plugins specifically) that I currently rely on would continue to work in Big Sur. To see if it’s an option for myself and others to immediately switch to Big Sur when it’s officially out. I guess we’ll continue to wait.

I have no idea. I was asking people who’ve tested this. I haven’t tried yet because I’d have to order a second display. I am looking for feedback here.

How about using your iPad or iPhone as a second display using Duet Display or Sidecar?

Thank you for putting in the work. Team Apple should send you a check. They can just sit there and watch this thread receiving clear direction on what’s working and what’s not...

Don’t know the answer to that either, but excellent question!

So when a secondary display is connected all these issues go away?
I haven't seen a single graphical issue since connecting my external display (1440p via a USB-C to Displayport cable). That said, I didn't have/notice the window corner issue so I can't speak to that one. But the white line hasn't been exhibited at all.

Totally bizarre why having another display connected would remedy the issue. Whelp I just ordered an LG QHD display off Amazon. Awfully sneaky how Apple has gotten me to play their ‘workaround’ game and spend more money huh?

Just looking through the boot logs and the first error is related to csr-active-config, which from what I understand is SIP related. I'm wondering if disabling SIP would allow the install to go ahead... 🤔

Well this is a Beta release. End user testing is what Beta releases are for.

I’m not referring to testing BS. I’m referring to all the work we are doing here to try and figure out what the issue is with the 5700 XT machines.

Oh, go on then — I'll be the sacrificial lamb! Signing up for the beta program now...

That 'signing up' makes me think you're using the public beta rather than the developer beta, which I believe is still at beta 5 (someone correct me if I'm wrong!).

Resolved in macOS Big Sur 11 beta 6
  • macOS Big Sur 11 beta 7 is now supported for iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020). (67093251)
This has been corrected; the release notes now say beta 6.

Thank you for this post! This is bizarre but my profile was set to the public beta program. I had to re-install the profile from developer.apple.com so it says Developer Seed Program again. I must've inadvertently tried installing the public beta 5. And of course that's what @tjramage must've done, right? Failing to pay attention to things today! Gah! Re-downloading now. This should be the real deal.

Excited to hear what you discover! Not just with the bugs, but also with the overall stability of your audio plug-ins and software. Which DAW are you using?

Because they called me to get information on what I was experiencing; because they requested video, screen shots, and logs; because they followed that up to request more information; and because they mentioned that they would be in touch again if they needed me to confirm anything else. And they have contacted many others regarding this. Do I know that the relevant team at Apple is looking at this right now, this very second? No, I do not. And I would not expect that. Software development does not work that way. This issue is likely in an extensive backlog from where it will be assigned a priority, it will be associated with a sprint, and people will be looking into it. Among any other issues. Some time from now, a fix -- if a fix is possible in software -- will be rolled out as a part of an overall macOS update or as a hotfix, should it receive special priority (which it won't).

I would assume any issue directly affecting sales - in this case for the iMac 2020 5700XT - would receive special priority.

I don’t think this is affecting sales yet because people are none the wiser. It will take awhile before these issues totally catch fire. It’s super hard to notice if you even blink. I’d say we are only simmering right now. Also, I don’t believe there is any such thing as ‘special priority’ with Apple. More than likely Apple won’t even touch this until the BS GM, which is quite troubling. 🥺

It's actually installing now. Clearly I'm an idiot today and didn't even confirm it was beta 6 before attempting to install. Wish they would spell out the build numbers upfront.

@kkh Huh? Where are you seeing that? Can you point me in the right direction?

Great shout @Nermal!
Apple has a profile tool that sets you either as a public beta tester or a developer. I'm an Apple developer but had my profile set to public beta somehow. No idea how. Never seen that happen before. So, we were both trying to install beta 5. Which does not work on these machines. I didn't even think about that when you said you had signed up to download it. And I didn't spot the difference in System Preferences > Software Update.

Ahh I see... There's a yearly fee to get access to the developer stuff, right?

Looks like you're on your own from here!

Well Apple stock fell 8% today. They are probably all focused on that. Some ‘quality’ QC would go a long way for them right now. 😉
