i would question all those so-called refurbs from the Apple Store as being refurbs at all... they're probably just clearing stock like all the other resellers have been. this method would allow them to keep their standard pricing, without having some grand sale to make their products seem cheap... or overpriced...

since Intel and Apple are totally having hardcore sex with each other, maybe Apple will receive some exclusivity on Montevina and ship new macs well before june? maybe even this coming week... ;)

this first part is interesting. i know its illegal to try to sell refurbs as new, but new as refurbs? it seems to me apple would probably be losing money on this, unless they're just scraping any of the real refurbs. can anyone comment on the legality or business aspects of a maneuver like this?

it's conceivable apple could get the montevina early, but an entire month ahead? this would certainly hurt Intels relationship with other PC manufactures, given how apple's market share keeps growing, unless they feel they really have the market cornered and are blowing AMD out of the water.

cmon now.. it will be a penryn processor.. why would anyone expect any different?

I think the most important thing here is if there is a graphics update and if they tried to address the screen backlight gradient problems at all.. if they did then it will be a worthy update

i would bet with monevina your going to see a more substantial overall revision including maybe a thinner case or something

New GPU and I'll be the first in line for a new iMac.

I have a confession to make. I'll be playing Age of Conan on my new iMac :)

 iMac Wish List 

Here’s what I’m hoping for. I’ll be happy with 1 or 2. Otherwise, it’s the current 24” refurbished for $1499. Could next Tues be the day?

Wants - More Likely
• Penryn processor (too early for Montivena)
• Matte screen option
• Matching keyboard and mouse (Aluminum and black like everything else Apple these days)
• Backlit keyboard like the MacBook Pro
• Support for more RAM
• Magnetic or other mount for remote

Wants - Less Likely
• Blu-ray (ain't going to happen)
• HDMI port
• Dual internal HDs to use with Time Machine
• Quad core model
• 30" version

Optional - New Apple peripheral
• Apple needs to sell a USB or Bluetooth mulitouch trackpad that can be used in place of a mouse and that would support gestures. Much more realistic than a multitouch screen and more practical to use. Like an iPod Touch for the desktop!

The iMac is way overdue for an update. The aluminum iMac was released last August. I think the next iMac refresh will include Penryn processors.

3 things comes to mind instantly:

1: a Penryn iMac update could have happened months ago, perhaps at the same time the MacBook was updated with Penryn, only 4 months after it had already received a speed bump.

2: Penryn chips don't hold much advantage to desktops. in fact, their only real advantage is they use less energy, so notebook computers have longer battery life...

3: Montivina is only a month away from it's official launch... do you think they're still working on the chip? no... it's finished, it was finished months ago... Apple is a huge player in the computer market now, and they're partnership with Intel is tight. besides, it's happened before that Apple received early chips from intel for the Mac Pro line...

1 - true
2 - false from a marketing standpoint - plus a cooler chip in a slim case is always a positive
3 - yes i think they are still working on the implementation of the chip into their imac design. There are alot of things that come into a product revision or development. Your not going to see a totally different CPU type all of a sudden. It is going to be rolled out with more substantial changes than what makes sense at this given timeframe for apple.

lol Common sense just seems to escape some speculators out there

The question shouldn't be whether the next iMac will use Penryn processors, it should be whether the iMacs will stick with the current Santa Rosa chipsets or upgarde to the Montevina ones?

The Montevina iMacs will still use Penryn processors.

ok, i was about to buy the 24", 2.8 extreme the weekend passed. but i got a call from a mac insider (friend who works there in UK). he told me to wait for 2 weeks, when the new imacs will be out. date was to be 22 of the month, but it got a 1 week delay. release date is 28 of the month. mot much comparing to the time you all been waiting for it. thing is, even he did not know what the new things on it will be. it's just a mystery. :(

waiting...anticipating...

An even better question is how many of you think that Apple uses the Santa Rosa chipset? The answer is Apple does not. To be accurate, the computer needs to use several internal components to technically have a Santa Rosa chipset. Currently Apple does not use all of these products - most notably the wifi chip.

What I'm saying is, Apple will not really use Montevina because they don't really use Santa Rosa now. As a result, it is possible that Apple could release new Penryn processors with a 1066 bus.

According to wiki, these processors will be available in May.

I tried to customize a new iMac on monday, the standard configuration would be shipped after 24 hours. However, today, it will be shipped in 5 days.

Would you consider such information relevant to the arrival of new iMacs?

Note that it was the Danish Apple Store, maybe they just have a shortage on Danish keyboards. :D

According to AppleInsider, the new iMacs are entering the retail system in the US.

Although this info could mean something, several retailers have created placeholders for new Apple products in the past. Amazon had a placeholder for iLife 07 which never came to be.

That being said, I'm hopeful new iMacs arrive soon. I just want them to include a 1066 mHz bus, processors up over 3 gHz, and a better GPU.

I'd buy it if it did, but something tells me I'll be holding on to my money!
Personally I hope they don't come out soon (unless they are as Sped wants which I find very unlikely) as if they come out later i.e. June - August time, they are more likely to be at this level as opposed to something not quite as nice which will delay an iMac of this kind of spec (which is what I'm after, especially if you throw in a redesign and multi-touch wireless mouse! )

apple's had some manufacturing problems recently. my friend ordered one of the new ipod shuffles, and its shipping followed the same exact course as your new iMac.

I sincerely hope you are correct sir. In fact, given the timeframe, apple changing the websites frontpage, and the way they handled the Mac Pro update (got it out of the way before Macworld) I'd say its a fair bet that new iMac's will arrive in one to two weeks from this tuesday with the 1066 bus.

I SO hope your right! I really don't want to buy a Santa Rosa iMac...

If they don't fix the TN panel problem on the 20" I don't want it. If that's the case, do you guys think they will still have the current 24" refurbs at $1499? That's the option I would like to take if they don't fix the screens.

Magnetic Alu Remote
Improved Alu Mouse :)
Decent Graphics Card :D

I couldn't give a funk about having a faster CPU or bigger HDD !!

Dang it Apple !! Give me a computer I can play the latest games on !! :(
