actually, someone in another thread mentioned that Apple is very unlikely to update anything big before the sales reports on the 23rd ( ? ) as it would confuse anaylists .

I analysts get confused on the earnings report for Jan.-Mar. by the introduction of new models in April, then they're pretty crappy analysts. This logic might work mid-quarter or late in a quarter, but not at the beginning of a quarter.

Im not 100 percent sure but I think somewhere in between those two dates you stated they had an option for a 7600gt. So we still have some hope in getting a GPU upgrade.
True, but that was only for the 24" as a BTO option. The 17" and the 20" could only have X1600 graphics. I sure hope they get new GPU's, I also happy with a BTO option for the 24". :)

Not sure about new GPU's, Apple used the X1600 in the white iMacs from jan 2006 till august 2007. I'm pretty sure the new iMacs will stay pretty much the same graphics wise... :(

A couple weeks ago someone posted...

Looking in kexts of 10.5.3 beta, i found it supports ATI Radeon 3650 and 34×0.

ATI RV635 Prototype OpenGL Engine

ATI RV620 Prototype OpenGL Engine

Which are the next two ATI Mobility GPUs, could be for testing, or could go live with the next iMac update.

Been quite a few times the next OS updates sent to developers have hints of new HW.

don't the iMacs usually have the same GPU as the MacBook Pros? new MBSs have NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT with 512MB... i think it would be REALLY LAME if the upcoming iMacs didn't have the same GPU as the MBPs

Apple split vendors of the desktops and portables awhile ago, one vendor gets all the iMacs and one for the portable. And they have switched back and forth.

i just did a quick price check of these GPUs and it seems that they, and the NVIDIA processors in the MBPs are on the low end... sub $100, and not so current... i do remember demoing some of those new EA games last year at christmas time, and my dad's new iMac wasn't able to play the game because of some video card issue, which of course was crazy ridiculous... seriously, how embarrassing for Apple... totally patting themselves on the back last summer with their big idea to team up with game developers and release large titles for mac, which didn't even work on the latest hardware... total joke.

Last time apple updated the GPU of the iMac it was actually more of a downgrade so don't get your hopes up. Just prepare for disappointment and buy a MBP instead :)

Obviously you should wait for them to get a new GPU since the current one is rather old as well :)

That's nice to hear, I sure hope they will be included in the next iMac update. Not a really big upgrade, but it's better than sticking with the current GPU's. :)

New imac Rumour

Multicoloured anodizing on Ali iMac

Built in Time Capsule i.e. two hard drives.

Mighty Mouse with touch scrolling instead of that annoying little ball that gets stuck:rolleyes:

You heard it here first, can't reveal my sources.

Why do these titbits always come from newbie's?

What's wrong with being a Newbie, you were one once.

Why do these titbits always come from newbie's?

I don't know? Why do these titbits always come from newbies? Is it a trick question? Is it b'coz we is clever?

Joking aside, Wouldn't the time capsule and touch scrolling on the mouse be good?
Not too sure if coloured iMacs would be a good idea. Although it saved Apple's bacon 10 years ago or there abouts.

...and the iMac upgrade day? Try the 2008 June WWDC otherwise what else will they have to launch other than the Top Secret 3G iPhone:) Ah yes, the Mac Mini integrated and renamed as Apple TVHDD or something like that.

I've said too much already, Steve told me to keep Schtum.
Loose lips sink ships! Be like Dad, keep mum.

new mighty mouse i can see... and i hope to see... but i can't see apple putting in 2 HDs in the iMac... for one, it would cannibalize sales of Time Capsule, which they just released. and two, there's no room left, especially if they're planning on making the new machines thinner.

argreed. alum mouse.

So you guys really think a new mighty mouse is on the way? I made a thread earlier about whether or not I should take the plunge now and buy a wireless one now or wait perhaps till June WWDC just in case they announce something.

I guess I'll just wait then. Only a month and a half to go anyway. An Alum mouse would be perfect. :D

How much are refurbs usually compared to the original price? For some reason I thought it was usually like $100 less, now it's about $200 less and listed as a special price. Dunno if that has anything to do with clearing inventory.

I'm not looking to get an iMac until maybe middle-summer though so I'm not pressing for an update immediately.

they've had the "special price" since early march. Originally it was suppose to be a two week deal, but its continued on. In terms of clearing inventory, I think apple had more returned computers than they projected due to the screen issues (gradient problems) and they're trying to clear that extra inventory. Fixing the screen issue may also be delaying the next update, whether its to penryn or montevina.

Aluminum Mighty Mouse is not possible without major changes to the current MM design.

Manufacturing: stamping aluminum into a 3-D contour shape is very expensive compared to plastic injection molding. Stamping aluminum into the current MM shape is impossible, IMO.

Touch: MM uses capacitive touch. How can you use capacitive touch with an aluminum surface??

But Montevina will use Penryn processors!

the distinction has already been made on this thread between penryn processors, which have currently been placed into the MB and MBP, and the montevina platform, which is currently set for release in june and based around penryn processors.

a streamlined alum mouse with slotted touchpads is possible. a two alum- peice mouse with curvature around only one axis for each is possible, although the cost of alum is probably prohibitory at this point, considering how much the current mouse sells for with a plastic casing.

The MacBook Pro's have 512MB 8600M GT cards now... will we see a 512MB option for iMac's?
A better GPU would be a bigger benefit then more VRAM. The Mobility 3xxx Series life span looks short lived. nVidia's 9M Series is just reassigned 8M models and some mobile G92 derivatives. The HD 4xxx Series looks promising if it arrives soon enough.

There are Santa Rosa based computers already sporting the HD 3xxx Series and the 9M. I wonder what Montevina will have. The desktop field is a lot more well known.

Think apple's going to try anything surprising with the next iMac update. Most rumors point to it just going thinner with the usual spec upgrades, but maybe competition from Sony, Dell has them thinking of new ways to stay ahead. It could be something really simple, like wall mountable, clock built in the chin,
toaster oven, new base, etc etc.

A thinner iMac means we can forget about a better GPU. Makes me sad to realise but I am one of those people that will always have to wait for the next model and then be disappointed since the GPU is still ****. Please dont make me buy a pc :)

Yes the performance between a 256 and 512 8600 is not very impressive.

ok, i was about to buy the 24", 2.8 extreme the weekend passed. but i got a call from a mac insider (friend who works there in UK). he told me to wait for 2 weeks, when the new imacs will be out. date was to be 22 of the month, but it got a 1 week delay. release date is 28 of the month. mot much comparing to the time you all been waiting for it. thing is, even he did not know what the new things on it will be. it's just a mystery. :(
One week left and we'll find out how reliable your friend's info is!
