ok, i was about to buy the 24", 2.8 extreme the weekend passed. but i got a call from a mac insider (friend who works there in UK). he told me to wait for 2 weeks, when the new imacs will be out. date was to be 22 of the month, but it got a 1 week delay. release date is 28 of the month. mot much comparing to the time you all been waiting for it. thing is, even he did not know what the new things on it will be. it's just a mystery. :(

One week from the 22nd is the 29th, not 28th. And not to add fuel to this fire (as I don't post here too often so take my words for what you will), but I have it on good word that the 29th will be the day we are given our new iMacs. Again, I'm not saying this is 100% definitely true, but the last 2 times he has given me info like this it has turned out to be accurate. We'll see a week from tomorrow, but if I'm right (and I likely am) I want credit! :p

Not to burst anyone's bubble…

I haven't been following this topic from the beginning, but I thought I'd drop in since I'm going to be in the market for a new iMac before the end of the year. Quite a ways off I know - but I was curious about the speculation. And what a lot of speculation we have here!

Just my quick two cents though. Historically speaking, the last TWO iMac models made their debuts in the Fall. The previous model went almost 12 months without a refresh. The white 24" debuted Sept. '06, the aluminum debuted Aug. '07 (according to Mactracker). Previous iMac's saw a refresh approx. within about 6-8 months. The original Intel iMac introduced in Jan. '06 was refreshed in Sept. '06. G5 iMac's saw a refresh every 5 months!

While an April update is still definitely possible, I'm betting on a 10-12 month refresh, which would put it at a June-Aug launch. I'm not sure I'd bet on WWDC for this, there will be a lot of iPhone hype going on around that time. That being the case I think we're looking @ a July/August refresh of the iMac line up. :apple:

Two things:
1. as the rumor goes, the alum iMac was suppose to released at WWDC last june, but was held up by manufacturing problems. This delay is apparently part of the reason so many photos of the alum keyboard showed up, even though apples pretty good at keeping secrets

2. the iphone and iMac are in completely different markets, and apple doesn't have problems releasing multiple products in targeted at different markets at the same time (mac pro and xserver update, time capsule/mac air, etc...)

So I need to get an iMac for work, and I've been putting it off now for about a month because we are way overdue for a refresh. Any words of encouragement to help me keep the willpower to keep holding out? I'm making due as best I can by using a g4 powerbook but I really need to get XP up and running on parallels to access our PC-only app.

i Have not read this whole link, but I would expect them very soon. Apple's internal stock system in Oz is showing no stock of any 2.4GHz models with no ETA, which is strange. Item is on "constraint"

Next week seems very likely.

1. Some of the iMac models are out of stock at MacConnection
2. The refurbished iMacs sale is still going on
3. It was almost 2 months since Apple released something new - iPhone SDK
4. The home page needs a change
5. The drivers to the ATI 3400/3600 mobility are already in place in 10.5.3 (since April 1). This means that the hardware is already complete and so are the drivers and 4 weeks should be enough to manufacture the new iMacs in mass quantities. 4 weeks from April 1st is next Tuesday.
6. For reference, the penryn Mac Pro's came out 3 weeks after the gpu drivers were added to beta builds of 10.5.2. 4 weeks should be enough for the iMac.

1. one store out of stock doesn't mean squat
2. a refurb sale indicates more supply than demand aka more busted machines they had to repair then they expected due to the gradient issue. from a business perspective, it makes more sense to reduce the refurbs to their current "sale" price after the new model is released due to the price discrepancies.
3. from the iphone introduction to the MBP updates last spring was 3 months, as was the time between the MBP update and the alum iMac
4. actually, apple is pumping up the SDK for the WWDC in june, which is now a month and 2 weeks away. i wouldn't be surprised if the SDK face was up until at least mid-may.
5. This is some decent speculation, although apple has released drivers for hardware components that don't show up before or could possibly end up in a mac pro. There's also certainly the possibility that these chips do end up in an iMac revision that shows up in June.
6. I'd point out here that the iMac is a significantly more complex to manufacture compared to the Mac Pro.

So here we are

Right in the middle ground of Penryn vs. Montevina It's April 23rd, a significantly long time since the MBP and MB's got updated to penryn based processors. So what does apple do, wait for montevina to drop or update now?

I think they should just wait for Montevina, since the Penryn offer very little difference for the iMac, even the maxed out clock speed is the same at 2.8.

If the Penryn's come, Apple won't move to Montevina for another 6 months.

99.9% sure about monday. with core2duo @3.06 ghz & 512 graph. card!! that's what it's gonna be. cannot wait really :)

do you mean a 3.16 ghz 6 MB cache 1333mhz E8500 intel core2duo desktop processor? because there's nothing clocked at 3.06 in the core 2 duo lineup for desktops or labtops based on penryn. now if its a merom, then clearly this rumors bogus, because there's no way a thinner iMac could handle the heat.

i agree with you, but reality may have different plans. also, i'd expect apple to update everything (MB, MBP, iMac, possibly the mini) to montevina by august 08, regardless of the time between updates.

if apple does hold off for montevina in the iMac, then I gotta give them props for not succumbing to a relatively useless update.

Nothing that fast until Montevina.

I believe that the iMacs, mini, Macbook, & Macbook Pro will all be updated in the timeframe between June and August as well. That is the best time and the most reasonable in my mind. Montevina will be out in June and will benefit all Apple models that use laptop components. If you look at Intel's roadmap for '08-'09 it shows that a new mobile CPU will be out in January and will fit in well with the update cycle for all of these units. It gives a good 7 months if they are updated in June and then again in January or later. I am holding out for a new iMac as I do not currently "need" a new one until the new ones are available. ;) To all that have been waiting like I have for the new iMacs/minis...keep it up! We've only got 6 weeks until June! :D

i would question all those so-called refurbs from the Apple Store as being refurbs at all... they're probably just clearing stock like all the other resellers have been. this method would allow them to keep their standard pricing, without having some grand sale to make their products seem cheap... or overpriced...

I think they should just wait for Montevina, since the Penryn offer very little difference for the iMac, even the maxed out clock speed is the same at 2.8.

If the Penryn's come, Apple won't move to Montevina for another 6 months.

since Intel and Apple are totally having hardcore sex with each other, maybe Apple will receive some exclusivity on Montevina and ship new macs well before june? maybe even this coming week... ;)

Montevina is clocked at 3.06GHz.. If what macattackamac said is true, then the new iMac must have the monevina processor :)

Just being vain and quoting myself. I was right :) .. remember my name (and macattackamac).. we've got the good source ;>

since we have a tentative date, what's the speculation on the specs then?

Think apple is important enough a 'partner' too intel to have an 'advanced' order on the Montevina platform?
