2TB SSD

You make a good point. If the checkpoint files are in RAM and can be written out from there to RAID5 in the background that would be a better solution than using the expensive SSD and maybe its wear and tear aspect. Thanks.... :)

As an aside.... does anyone have knowledge about how the physical data paths are configured for the 4x TB3 ports. Do all 4 port share a single data channel, 2 channels, 3 channels or even 4 channels ? In comparison, the MP6,1 has three separate data channels for its 6 TB2 ports; 2 per channel.
I beleive it has 2 TB channels per PCIex4 data path. The other 2 channels the Xeon provides are use for the second NVME slot.

You know a lot has changed since Apple announced the default configuration. I was surprised to see Apple sent 10-core 64gb configurations as all the demo units. They also surprised everyone with a new 14-core configuration.

Between that and intel’s last minute upgrading the 8th gen i7 chips to 6-core to compete with Ryzen. I have to wonder if Apple is going to just make the 10-core the default configuration for the iMac Pro. It really won’t be that long and they will be selling a 6-core standard iMac based on the 8700k. They may have decided after Intel announced the 8700k to differentiate the iMac Pro line more by making 10-core default. An 8700k iMac would make it hard to justify the cost differential for an 8-core iMac Pro.
[doublepost=1513204299][/doublepost]Sounds like you’ve got a good solution. I’ve done something similar on Linux previously.

I’d worry about the wear on the SSD making regular large writes to the SSD. Could you not do the same with RAM disk and the raid array and skip the SSD.

I think that the test units had 128GB RAM.

Apple usually equips their review units to give the best impression to the reviewer with the supplied software.

I wonder if this means FCP X 10.4 will be a memory demon? Just possibly it will if editing 8K.

Also: does the Apple Store still go down before new product (categories) are made available? Something to do with the WebObjects backend.

FCPX 10.4 might eat memory, that is something to consider. The price between 64 and 128GB will be interesting to see tomorrow morning.

I know I’m probably kidding myself, but it would be great if Apple kept the upgrade prices at or near fair market value. They’ve never done that before, but perhaps they’ll take a different approach now, especially since the base model is reasonably priced.

Tippically Apple has a few standard configurations that are reasonably priced, but other BTO options come at a premium. My guess is moving from the base to mid level configuration will be really close to fair market value. Other BTO configurations will come at a premium.

Per John Gruber, they no longer have to take the store down to add products. They do it during keynotes for theatrics/marketing. I doubt they would do it for a niche product like the iMac Pro. But you never know, maybe they will want to gin up some excitement.

Does anyone know if ordering through the business department will net a discount? My phone call to Apple said no while the store said yes. Does anyone have any new release experience?

Apple does have business assioaciates that can provide discounts for purchases. Typically requires multiple units of standard configurations but eqch sales associate is different based on how busy they are... some won’t give you the time of day unless you want to order 10+ units. Others will work with you if you say you want to buy one or two for evaluation.

I know the store near me has a sales person that just works with local businesses. I happened to get referred to him when looking at the Mac Pro after I said I wanted to use it for work as an Engineer.

Hmmmmm..... Upgrading RAM maybe possible with a slight mod to the back of the iMac. It seems there are four RAM slots that are to the left of the stand when looking at the rear. If the backing is removed a 4" x 4" high (or maybe 6" x 4" high) square section could be cut out and with some clips of some sort could be held in place and easily removed to access the RAM modules. So long as this cutout was nicely sealed when in place the cooling design would not be compromised. Hey, just a thought. :):D

This is super fun following all of you! I can't wait to see what the actual prices will be. And I can't wait to see all of the configurations after they have been fully vetted/tested. Once I'm armed with all of that data (in approx 2 months), then I can pull the trigger and place my order.

RuffDraft, I didn't realize you were limping along on a 2011 MBP! Wow! No wonder you're staying up to place your order...you definitely need this machine, now!

Nice! It'll be great to make an informed decision in two months for sure. I should have six projects edited and out the door by then at the cost of the iMac Pro, so I'm just hoping to get it done and dusted today.

Really struggling. Proxy media and better performance selected in FCPX. Unless it's a close up, I can barely tell if something is in focus. I nearly bought the Trash Can Mac Pro at the end of 2015, but as it was approaching 1,000 days without an update, I held on... and held on... and held on... and I've become more and more stubborn as the days have passed. Really glad it's held up for the duration of time, as the GPU died in 2015 and Apple replaced it for free, thankfully, along with the mother board, so I've been expecting another GPU failure, given how much I've been throwing at it almost 24/7.

Really hoping the release is 8am or 9am UK time for UK... otherwise, it's going to be a lot of refreshing browsers all day long.

I wouldn't see a reason for Apple selecting to make FCPX a memory hog when they've limited MacBook Pros to 16GB RAM... and charged users over £3K for it? I think they'd have a lot of people refusing to upgrade if that were the case for colour wheels and a few other advancements.

I'm going with £1,495 to £1,995 for 128GB RAM. What's your guess?

Come on, Apple, let us buy it!!!!

If so, why apple haven't provide the review unit with 18 C ? im sure for Apple Intel could provided that chip
Lets wait and see first

Thanks Cisco... I think it's a waiting game unless you know that it's 5:30-8:30 as the Americans know, Pacific Time...

I'm not so sure we're going to have the ability to pre-order at 8 or 9am UK time - it seems weird to give us the jump on the Americans - we'll be able to tell them about the config prices or they'll be able to see it for themselves.

so almost 4 more hours ?!

Potentially, by the looks of things... our customer service agents are available in six minutes - I'm going to try to get the jump considering it's UK time and says that it's available today...

What are the chances it's midnight Pacific Time? Seems weird to ask you to get up at 4:30?
