Not to pick on you, because it seems like a common sentiment, but why do people feel a need to have someone “know” their computer is a Mac?

This supports the idea that Apple products are fashion accessories meant to show off your ability to pay more than you need to for the actual performance just to prove that you can.

I love my Apple products, but it’s not my job to advertise for Apple, nor do I need to impress anyone.

It’s not that we want people to know we have a Mac. Apple wants people to know it’s a Mac. For portables having the logo on the back means people will still see it. For a desktop the back means mostly it will never be seen. The iMac will almost certainly have an Apple logo on the front of it because Apple wants people to know it’s a Mac.

I am a graphic designer by trade and I had some fun playing with what the new design could look like. I took in consideration all the rumors - having an iPad Pro like design language, Pro XDR Bezels and I put in the visual design of the XDR stand. The only question is what do they do with the Iconic chin. My guess is they won’t be getting rid of it completely.

Which won do you guys think Apple with go with? I personally like the reduced chin look.

I hope for the middle option. I fear the last one is more likely...

Oh I think the chinless design looks best, but the chin is currently where the iMac exhausts (or is it intake?) I think, so they’d have to re-think that I’d bet.

I personally think a "chinless" iMac with a thicker bottom bezel and a silver Apple logo like the one on the thunderbolt display would look the best.

@FrankieSavvy Instead of the XDR Stand, would any other Stand-like new product by Apple from recent months come to your mind....? Something "magical" maybe....?
;-)

some Kind of chin is necessary otherwise it looks like a generic monitor. either the reduced chin or the wider bottom bezel as mentioned above works for me.

the chin is iconic to the iMac look and honestly, yes, the 2019 iMac still looks better than any modern desktop design IMO, even with the thick bezels that I never minded in the first place.

for everyone saying iPads and iPhones don’t have a front logo, well that’s true...and they all look generic. from a distance I can’t tell an iPad or iPhone apart from most other brands from the front view if the screen is off BUT I can spot an iMac in the background of a film or TV show and know immediately it’s an iMac. That’s timeless, great design.

I like the chin, but maybe in black glass? Like the old 24” Apple display.

That was my idea, too.

Why does the chin have to be silver? Could the display glass not extend over the chin? Like the Thunderbolt Display? That seems like the most modern looking idea.

Apple wants a unified design language for some of the mac product and the chin is not iconic which does not make it look better and only increase the final BOM.

The iPad doesn't have a chin. Therefore, it is no brainer that the iMac is better without a chin.

This is the the best looking render imo. Keep the height adjustability of the Mac Pro display stand, with the more refined design like the existing tapered base. Remove unnecessary design elements like the chin.

For all those who bemoan and criticise uneven bezels on many Android phones, there’s only one answer, chinless. 😏

BTW, why wasn’t this a poll?

This is exactly what I would want. The color of the finish on the current iMac is distracting. Might be good for a showroom but day to day it's not ideal over a matte. I want my eyes to be only focused on the screen. The iMac Pro was definitely a good step but ideally I want something like above that sleek and shows off the monitor. Watching content in the dark on the silver iMac is distracting.

well, that’s all subjective. I’m good with a unified line if they remove the chin. I’m still buying whatever they release next in the 27” size. I’m just saying I like the chin design. Now, I do agree we can lose the bright aluminum color. Definitely needs to go to space gray or darker.

If the chin means that they can put better speakers in it then they should keep the chin.
Speakers are pretty good on my iPad Pro... but if you really care for quality sound from a computer like I do you’d get some small monitors and an amp like I have.

You must not watch many TV shows or movies since they are littered with Apple computers and we all know that because they have an Apple logo. If it was a blank screen then no more Apple product placements or advertising revenues. Apple cares much more about this than I do and besides he Apple logo is iconic and cool looking unlike the ugly Windows logo.

I always thought it'd be cool if they'd incorporate Touch ID into the Apple logo on the chin.

VHS is a classic design. Should we have kept that. No chin in the future. No need for a chin

That’s not a good comparison of what’s at stake here. Here, people are discussing form, not function.

One thing to keep in mind about all this bezel angst: all that’s being done is taking more away and getting to basically a screen on a stand. What’s left once all that is presented is a screen with no bezel? Everyone’s happy and will never ever again have something new to ask for?

When Cadillac radically minimized their logo decades ago in an attempt to be new and hip it was especially interesting initially not because in and of itself but only by comparison to the prior, more detailed logo. A basic, reduced design that has none of the thoughtful, unique story-telling detail of the one that replaced. The new minimized design was interesting because it was different, not necessarily because it was “nicer” or more thoughtfully unique to the one it replaced.

I don’t find the current Cadillac logo ugly, but once you think about it, one can only understand its context by going back to the original logo with the wreaths, colors, ducks I think and a few other flourishes now gone.

So pretty soon, the iMac bezel will be completely gone and it will be edge to edge. If the rest of the lemming tech designers follow Apple‘s lead like they always do, so will other makers follow. Then all look alike. Then what’s next?

Just food for thought.

I believe the "how will people know it's an iMac" bit was more of them thinking from Apple's perspective rather than the consumer's. That being said, neither the iPod, iPhone, nor iPad have ever had an Apple logo on the front (though of course it is on the back) and that hasn't seemed to be an issue.

Also, I don't think aapl owner is meaning to impress anyone that they own Apple products. I mean, really, does that even impress anyone in the first place? It may be a conversation starter, but I don't think it screams "Wow, look at me!" anymore than driving, say, a BMW does nowadays. They make models at various price points and of course can be acquired quite cheaply on the used market (the car and the computer).

Maybe they could put the Apple logo on the base of the stand so you could still see it from the front.
