I really miss that iMac with the disc drive. When was the final year it was released? Maybe 2013? I never did buy one. I actually still have my 2006 iMac, the first intel model which is slow as heck and I don’t use it anymore.
I believe the final disc drive model was released in 2011. Quite a nice, upgradeble machine and still useable today!

I am a graphic designer by trade and I had some fun playing with what the new design could look like. I took in consideration all the rumors - having an iPad Pro like design language, Pro XDR Bezels and I put in the visual design of the XDR stand. The only question is what do they do with the Iconic chin. My guess is they won’t be getting rid of it completely.

Which won do you guys think Apple with go with? I personally like the reduced chin look.

Option 1. No chin. It had me at 'Hello.' I can tell it's an iMac.

Mirrors the XDR design language.

Apple are secure in their own design aesthetic now to have a logo on the back of the iMac. The design, itself, identifiably Apple.

The iPhone. That no longer has a chin and the Apple logo on the back.

There's plenty of empty space in the iMac to not have any chin at all. Removal of the chin and 'oil tanker' borders can help push the iMac's design onto what it really is.

A giant iPad on a stand. Which will foreshadow teh move to Mac ARM. :p

Just as the previous plastic flat iMac was a giant 'iPod' on a stand.

Azrael.

Big chin and thicker for a new BluRay SuperDrive 😂 . Oh and perhaps a menecing looking subwoofer along the bottom and a couple of pop up tweeters from the top left and right too! I have no idea why that came to my head.

I like the idea of an iMac matching the XDR style, but that's also why keeping the chin makes sense. If you look at both of them from the front, the chin makes for an easy identifier for which screen is actually hiding computer components inside.

I'm imagining a full glass front, though, with a black chin and a metal apple logo. If the screen goes edgeless, that would make for a pretty sleek-looking chin IMO

What about no chin but have the logo on the curve of the stand?
I don’t see Apple ditching the logo - it’s too iconic for the Mac brand.

Reduced chin but have black to match a near bezeless screen would be sharp. Otherwise it just looks like any other monitor - and Apple doesn’t do that.

They have the huge Apple logo on the back.
Yes but you usually don’t see that - they still want that recognition in an office or a business. Placing it on the stand would work.

Either way I bought a 2019 last July -I’ll be skipping the new model unless it is something totally new and game changing.

Good point; in some desk setups you can't really see the back of the display.

I know it won’t happen, but a nod to the old lampshade G4 iMac but with a zero bezel screen would be welcome.
Yes, the "dome" G4 iMac was, to me, the most iconic and the most ergonomic design they ever had - the fact that the height was adjustable was a really valuable feature.

For the new iMac, a similar idea would be great, and would obviously be slimmer/lighter than that model.

An arm allowing for rotation so the screen could be used vertically as well as horizontally - that would be a nice addition too.

Why would the stand look like the pro monitor stand? I thought they might do something like the iPad Pro keyboard where you can move the screen up and and forward and back. But when I think about it I can’t remember he last time I actually wanted to adjust the screen on my iMac.

If they’re planning on making this an Apple Pencil compatible iMac, I like your suggestion of using the double hinge design of the Magic Keyboard to accomplish this.

It wouldn’t have a keyboard, just a heavy base and it would be adjustable to lower the display to the desk an angle capable of being drawn on comfortably.

The chin would make a lot of sense in this design as it would give you a place to rest your hand when in the draft table position.

This is my preferred design as well. The thing is, the lampshade iMac was built that way out of necessity to have a place to host the large internals of a Mac at the time, including a full size hard drive and optical drive, while having a thin display that was light enough to float on a spring arm.

Since they’re eliminating the hard drive and the design introduced next week will go on to using cooler ARM chips, everything will fit in a thin iPad Pro like enclosure, with no base needed.

But if they did in fact introduce a modern version of this, I would absolutely lose my mind.

Here’s a throwback to Steve Jobs introducing it.

@FrankySavvy, well done on these renders. If you’re taking requests, I’d love to see a modern interpretation of the lampshade iMac G4.

I've had the chin in front of me for the last 14 years now, so no chin for me, I'm tired to see it :)
Great concepts BTW.

I wouldn't put my hand in the fire, but it feels like we'll be able to choose their XDR stand as an upgrade. I won't do it though, way too expensive, but it's always a great thing in an industry to be able to share components between different models.

All renders are wrong, but you have no chance of knowing.

The next iMac will have a square display. Resolution will be 5120x5120, and it will be available in 2 sizes.

In the keynote, they will present the square monitor as best size for working (e.g. Pages, Keynote, Adobe etc) and that Apple TV is for movies etc...
I would love a square display for working, even if it was a standalone monitor. It would amazing at that resolution.

Someone has already done that concept and I love it (but it is missing ports and I don't like the touchscreen keyboard). It also highlights how an iMac could look individual without the chin.

NGL, I kinda hate that idea of resurrecting the G4 look. It's a nice render, but that whole retro futuristic look didn't age well. It's like something out of The Jetsons.

And good luck getting a meaningful GPU/CPU combo in that base. I think bringing the components up into the chassis of the screen like the modern iMac is always going to be the better option, because you get to scale up internal volume in proportion to the screen space.

I always hated the original iMac chin up through 2009. After 2010 the reduction made the look bearable, and I didn't mind it. That said, I think its due to the fact I got used to it. I were to make the choice back then, I would absolutely vote against any chin whatsoever.

It's clear that the iMac chin is a distraction and unnecessary.

Apple will drop it to look more like an iPad.

I think I like a more muted "chin" ala the A1407 display, but 2nd comments re: speakers compromise without so if so, I wouldn't be a fan, but do like your 'suggestion' of a better iPod PRO stand!
