So far it seems there is no flash on this device, which sucks.

10 hour battery life is awesome though, but no flash?

I was considering ridding my MBP for this...but now, hah!

Macbook, iPod Touch, and a Dell Mini 10v running 10.6.2....

I have no need for this, and i would not trade my iPod Touch and my Dell Mini Netbook, which combined prices are cheaper than an iPad, for this new device.

I think it has a lot of possibility, im buying one when they are released. The first thing I wanted when I got my ipod touch was a bigger one.

thats a good point. if it has snow leopard on it then im sure it would have a bigger following, though of course that would eat up the battery life too.

I'm on the fence right now. I think it looks really good, because since I got my iPhone I've wanted a bigger one, but I certainly won't be buying until I play with it in the flesh. I want to make sure the form factor is conducive to use. It almost looks as if it's impossible to type two handed while holding the thing landscape, and I'd hate that.

I would have gone out and bought it if it could run OS X, but at this point, it's just a big iPhone, but without a camera and a phone.

At that price ($499 for 16Gb), I see it as a great alternative to the Kindle.

I've been thinking about eBook readers for a while now, and held off until today in the hope that Apple would release an eBook reader that also had email capability.

I want to watch the keynote podcast first, but it may be everything I hoped for, plus more.

The only really cool thing about it is the new iWork apps. Other than that it's basically just a bigger iPod Touch. Who needs one of these if you already have a MacBook and an iPod Touch?

The only thing that separates it from an iPod Touch is that it's bigger and has 3G capability. So, it's way too expensive, IMO, and you still have to pay for the data use. I was hoping it would be auto-tethered to the iPhone. It's definitely not "magical."

Impressed? Yes and no.

There IS room in the market between smartphones and laptops. That's why we see so many netbooks. They're one version of an in-between device. This is another version.

Price and [apparent] battery life of the iPad are its saving graces.

Video: Being able to watch hours of video while traveling, on something bigger than an iPhone and less cumbersome than a laptop, is a HUGE plus. That alone would have been worth the asking price when I used to travel a lot.

Ebook: Backlit, glossy screen. Not a chance I'll read a whole book on it.

Internet: Way better form factor than a netbook and hardly more cumbersome. Still, the iPhone is sufficient for me while traveling. But the pay-as-you-go connectivity makes this a winner.

Apps: Running native iPhone apps is a stop-gap measure. There's going to be GREAT apps for this.

I guess I'm impressed. It's just that I don't need another device.

No flash isn't a problem.

If this device becomes popular, along with iphones and touches, no sane website will rely on flash any longer unless they want to seriously limit the number of people who can see their website.

Ultimately it looks like Steve will win this war, and flash will be used by few people and the newer standards will be used instead.

Too early to say really, but my initial reaction is that it's a lame missed opportunity. But I said that about the iPod

Based on the price, and the fact the 3g data is $29 I think that was the biggest surprise to me. I expected low end $799 and up from there. The OSX vs iPhone OS really wasn't a big deal as I already use my iPhone for a ton of things on the road. I think people want to be perceived as a "power user" when in fact this device will more then do what they want.

Outside the tech forums the general consumer will eat these up as well. Toss all the blog/forum users together and were probably less than 1 or 2% of the consumers buying Apple products.

Like it or not this will sell like crazy.
