Impressed? Yes and no.

There IS room in the market between smartphones and laptops. That's why we see so many netbooks. They're one version of an in-between device. This is another version.

Price and [apparent] battery life of the iPad are its saving graces.

Video: Being able to watch hours of video while traveling, on something bigger than an iPhone and less cumbersome than a laptop, is a HUGE plus. That alone would have been worth the asking price when I used to travel a lot.

Ebook: Backlit, glossy screen. Not a chance I'll read a whole book on it.

Internet: Way better form factor than a netbook and hardly more cumbersome. Still, the iPhone is sufficient for me while traveling. But the pay-as-you-go connectivity makes this a winner.

Apps: Running native iPhone apps is a stop-gap measure. There's going to be GREAT apps for this.

Apparent is key for the battery life. If you can run 10 hours of video or games then that's great. We'll see.

Based on the price, and the fact the 3g data is $29 I think that was the biggest suprise to me. I expected low end $799 and up from there. The OSX vs iPhone OS really wasn't a big deal as I already use my iPhone for a ton of things on the road. I think people want to be perceived as a "power user" when in fact this device will more then do what they want.

Outside the tech forums the general consumer will eat these up as well. Toss all the blog/forum users together and were probably less than 1 or 2% of the consumers buying Apple products.

Like it or not this will sell like crazy.

you are right sir.

this will sell like crazy, just because there are people on here complaining, they have no idea how marketing works....games...books....music....movies....thats what sells.

take a successful ipod touch and make the screen bigger....people will buy it.

i will buy it.....

like it or not....more for me :D

Not an eBook

I'm going to be very curious to see how Apple does with their iPad in the next year or so. What it most definitely is NOT is a truly decent or dedicated eBook. I was skeptical whether it would be, but rather than refining the Amazon Kindle concept, they've gone off in a different direction.

What that might be, I'm not sure. Will have to study it more to learn the specs, but apparently it is not powerful enough to substitute for a laptop, which if it could might be what it is best suited for. For just communication, why wouldn't I prefer an iPhone, rather than lugging that thing around? Perhaps the best feature I can discern is an unlimited data plan at $30 per month.

It is nice and slim, although the bezel too wide. But at the dimension of a magazine, I'll stick with a paperback in bed. I was looking for something similar to a Kindle, but simpler and better, even perhaps less expensive. Apple obviously has other ideas.

Personally, I am not impressed, at all. I am more impressed at the price than I am with the product!

I'm sure the iPad will fly off the shelves but I personally will not be getting one. If you already have a smartphone for on the go browsing, email etc. & a laptop for portable computing around the house or on a plane/train, why would anyone possibly need the iPad? Sure it's a cool new gadget but it just doesn't do it for me.

They should have just made a slightly larger iPhone with a higher resolution display and packed most of this stuff in it.

I'm really unsure what to think of the iPad. It'll go the way of the Apple TV.

There's no real purpose - it's too big to carry around in your pocket, and if you were to carry one in a bag, you'd be far better getting a MacBook so you can at least do more.

I think basing the whole thing on the iPhone OS is a bit weak..

If you were able to run your OS X applications on it, it'd be far more appealing.

There may be a market for this, students and so forth as they are making deals with content providers.

The point seems this is a niche product and is not designed for everyone.

Though we'll see 100's of post lamenting the fact that it doesn't do a,b,c,d,e,f,and on and on:rolleyes:

The only really cool thing about it is the new iWork apps. Other than that it's basically just a bigger iPod Touch. Who needs one of these if you already have a MacBook and an iPod Touch?

Because my macbook is too big and my iphone is too little, and this iPad is just right.

You never read the three little bears?

so, it's not a phone in any way, ie, you can't make/receive phone calls.....

No native phone capabilities. There's always Skype, but I'm not sure it has any kind of built in mic or line in for a 3rd party mic.

Edit: it does have an internal microphone, so yes Skype would be an option, but of course no video conferencing due to the lack of an iSight.

Well, I definitely plan to buy the Wifi version. Pretty much what I wanted (except for the lack of multitasking but I guess I'll listen to Pandora on my iPhone): Bigger screen, more powerful processor for apps, updated UI, good for internet.

wow,its not real 720p. they are charging to have wifi built in and the diff prices ranges are rediculous. and wots with this 1ghz, it would have been better to use that along with tegra 2 at least. its such a huge let down. i thought it would at least be full internet like going to any site i can go to on my mac even those sites that use the java based chat windows etc.

pc companies with make there own xp based tablets with tegra 2 and will be faster and more computer like than this.

i guess i just thought it would have been more computer like, maybe even to run osx apps at least.

obvioulsy they left out the good stuff so they can make more money in the future like they did with iphone etc.

i like apple but this is just not wot i expected.if anything id rather buy an iphone cause this doesnt do much more than that, except a few things.

1024-by-768- lol

1GHz Apple A4 custom-designed, high-performance, low-power system-on-a-chip- the 10 hour thing is good

its like having a parent that only lets you do wot they think is right for you and as you get older you get more options.

ill wait for a full on pc xp based tablet or wotever os they will use

I'm not impressed, but I will get one. I often surf the web while watching TV, or play games while listening to TV that you don't have to watch (if that makes sense), all on my iPhone. I've always wanted a bigger iPhone to do this, and now here it is.

I'm going to get the non-3G version, but with 64 gigs so that I can load it up with movies when I travel. I like the keyboard dock and the cover/kickstand too.

I'm expecting developers to go crazy with apps that take advantage of the bigger screen and greater horsepower this has over the iPhone.

Anything groundbreaking? No (battery is awesome though)
But it is exactly what I wanted.

Nope! - Not impressed, not gonna get it...

No built-in camera
No built-in 3G in the standard unit
No built-in GPS in the standard unit
No built-in SD card slot, forcing us to buy a adapter
No Multitasking
No Mac OS X, running the limited iPhone OS
So much to name

For now I won't be buying one, maybe the next version if they make most of those things I listed standard.

I'm impressed with the technology but not quite what I was hoping for. I don't need a big iPhone...what I needed was a more intuitive replacement for my MBP.

It's an Apple Tablet. It's well designed, slick, intuitive. It's a touchscreen TABLET. I think Apple delivered pretty well on that. Yes it runs on iPhone software, because that software has proven to be extremely user-friendly and popular. Why reinvent the wheel? It works. It's not meant to run OS-X... because it's a tablet. Not a Mac.

I'm not sure what everyone was expecting, honestly.

Am I totally impressed, no.

But I'd rather have the iPad than my 3G 32GB touch. I got a buyer so I'm selling it this weekend.

i think this is for people who are most likely iphone users who like apple products but would never pay $999 for a laptop.

half the price, half the functionality... but then again many non tech savvy people only use computers for what this is meant for.

now what i want to see, is new versions of mail, ical, etc. in 10.7 that look like the new ipad apps. those look pretty sweet.

I am impressed, because it's exactly what I expected. Basically an apple version of a netbook, with a killer gaming library, which will do wonders when traveling.

If I did expect a fully loaded product, (basically a touchscreen macbook), then I would be disappointed, but know that **** like that can't possibly made without costing an arm and a leg.

That being said, I am on the fence because I do have a macbook and an iPhone, and don't really have a need for it. But I do recommend it to anyone who basically wants a nice on the go, lite web machine with TONS of fun applications, and a great screen to watch HD videos if you have some.

While I think this is a great start to a new Apple product, I have a few issues with it. I wish that this wasn't so similar to the iPod touch. I really do love the addition of iWork and the iBookstore, but I wish this thing was really a PAD. I wish it came with a pen, that we could jot down notes with, and when we wanted to, use the keyboard. I'm still debating if I'm really going to buy one (I thought I definitely was at first) but now that I think more about it, I'm wondering how often I would use this.

If it was truly a digital notebook, where I could take notes in class or draw, and was something totally revolutionary, I would be 100% sold.

Not sure what everyone was expecting as well but I do know what a lot of the consumers were hoping for. I don't believe that user friendliness had much to do with Apple's decision to go with the iPhone OS. Apple is using the same business model they applied with the iPhone and iPod...profit through iTunes. They're pricing the iPad so aggressively because they know that the real profit is not in the hardware but the media you will use with the hardware. Much like game consoles - the manufacturers barely break even on the hardware but the amount of money they get from the games is what makes it lucrative. I don't hate Apple for doing this; it's a business model that worked very well for them. I'm just a little bummed that the iPad does not fit me specifically as a consumer, at least for now. But it's okay...after 2 iMac's, a MBP, 4 iPhones, proprietary Apple softwares, and my need to try every application out there; Apple is making out just fine with my bank account.
