I'm not impressed at all - for all the reasons already mentioned (no OS X, no Flash and no multitasking are the massive dealbreakers for me) and I won't be buying one even though I'd love a new toy.

So after yet another disappointing Apple announcement (no OS 4 or iLife 10 either) I've decided it's about time Apple reconsidered their new products being completely under wraps and think about doing some consumer research.

Just look at that poll!

Basically its the tablet equivalent of an :apple:tv (highly restrictive, and like most things, has just enough power to fit its job description i.e Front Row)
What most of us who voter negatively wanted was a tablet equivalent of the mac mini (can do all the same things the apple tv does but has no restrictions, far more power/flexibility and runs mac os x)

:apple:tvs don't sell, partly because mac owners buy mac minis to do the job the :apple:tv was designed to do.

If the iPad doesn't take off in the mainstream market them Steve Jobs better not rely on the Mac-faithful:eek:

Not for me, if it ran full OS X then yes, but not with iPhone OS.

I feel the same. I feel it is just a glorified ipod touch. Running OS X would have appleaded to me more. I already have an ipod touch don't really need one that does the same thing for 3 times the cost

I feel like the people in my age group are going to snap this up. (over 50)

We don't need portability, but we want a lighter computer with a bigger screen.

This seems to have just what we need.

I think Steve Jobs developed it for his generation, not the texting smart phone age group.

so there was no mention of updated MBP's in the presentation?

if the iPad supported OSX, maybe, but since it doesn't i'm waiting for the next MBP update.

any news?

Nope! - Not impressed, not gonna get it...

No built-in camera
No built-in 3G in the standard unit
No built-in GPS in the standard unit
No built-in SD card slot, forcing us to buy a adapter
No Multitasking
No Mac OS X, running the limited iPhone OS
So much to name

For now I won't be buying one, maybe the next version if they make most of those things I listed standard.

For you there is a "non-standard unit". And that one is cheaper than most forecasts for the entry level unit. Oh wait, you just need to complain, moving along...

No thanks i'll pass

Like the other posts, when it runs Mac OSX not the very limited iphone OS, I'll be more tempted.

my best friend is looking into getting a macbook...we saw this and he's now def. getting a 13 inch mbp.

this ipad thing just isn't practical...especially for a college student. the battery life is great but what about typing...

and no flash?! gimme a break.

I'm impressed. Multi-tasking can be turned on via an update. Will it? Who knows. Personally, while I totally understand the want and need for it, I really am not too bothered. The OS interface is just so sleek and functional that a click of the home screen and a click of the next app is pretty routine and easy such that I don't care too much about it.

The biggest setback to me is lack of a camera, but I always have my iPhone on me, so no biggie there.

I'm a college student and I think it's quite practical. ****, it's all I really need for school as opposed to lugging my MacBook to and from. Get an iPad, keyboard dock and iWork (which is all I use anyway), and I'm all set for taking notes. It's small enough that when I have to stand up on the train in the mornings I can still review notes or, in a best case scenario, read my textbooks.

I agree with the no Flash thing, but all in good time. It'll happen. Same with multitasking. OS 5.0 will see a dock introduced with limited multitasking (3-4 apps at once type of thing). All I need in class.

Windows on tablets has already proven that a full OS doesn't translate well to a tablet.

Thats a good point.

For a moment I thought about the iPAd being not too bad, considering $30 a month to always be connected online. Not having the iPhone made this appealing to me. I lug around my MBP w/ me everywhere but thats not a big deal. The truth is I wouldn't even consider this iPad for a second if I had an iPhone...

Though the keyboard dock is appealing to me as a college student, and the 10 hour battery life as well, the lack of flash and a real OS just makes it obsolete in my mind...

....plus.................... only up to 64GB?!?!?!

My mbp currently has a 500GB HD which i absolutely love.

No thanks Apple.

Sucks too cause the iPad itself does look sleek.

I think it was Gizmodo that just wrote a review about how the iPAd itself isn't completely flat, meaning typing while on a flat surface would mean slight wobbling when typing on the screen itself. I agree the iWork and keyboard dock are very appealing, but along with the reasons i just stated in my post above, it sucks that its just not a real OS. A real OS.

but hey, if someone came up to me and gave it to me for free, I'd have no problem accepting it and leaving my MBP at home. But i'd still not be happy with the 64GB's. I'm currently using 300GB and need it all.

It's a big iPod Touch, that's all.

See, I have an iPhone and I want to couple it with an iPad. I just wouldn't bother getting a 3G one. WiFi is enough for me when I use my MB, if I MUST be connected I can use my iPhone.

If I'm typing on the screen with the device flat, it'll already be in the case I'd have bought for it. Problem solved.

It's a big iPod Touch, that's all.
And the problem is? This thing is meant to compete with netbooks. For every use that I would buy it for, it's perfect. Yes, I want multitasking and flash, but since I'm a good 2 years away from needing one anyway odds are pretty good one of those features will be added. Otherwise, the iPad is a good product that will be a success.

Oh yeah, the Calendar app. Holy living crap I want that application.

"No escape from Reality...”
Apple wanted their Vitual Boy and Sega CD. Here it is.

LOL... (starts frowning...) I love my Sega CD...

What a disappointment. Nothing but a big expensive iTouch.

What exactly was everyone expecting?

so much for all the smack apple was talking about netbooks, huh.

Apple doesn't make "cheap computers" (remember what Steve Jobs said?) - the NetBooks are really in that category - a space that Apple will never compete in.

OHHH a bigger iPod touch OMG i must have it...

That would be a Tablet Computer. iTablet? The multitasking/OS X version (with the MBA HD) of the device? $899?

I remember when the iPhone came out - people wanted an iPhone without the Phone part - and we got it... :D

huh?

Apple is using the same business model they applied with the iPhone and iPod...profit through iTunes. They're pricing the iPad so aggressively because they know that the real profit is not in the hardware but the media you will use with the hardware.

Ummm, I think you might be wrong there. From all that I've read Apple more or less breaks even on the iTunes store (probably now turining a nice profit with their cut from the app store) and has always used the store as a way of selling more iPods/iPhones because they make more through the hardware.

I think you've flipped the argument around.

Edit:

Actually, now that I think more about it, you might be right. Initially the iTunes only barely broke even and they used it to sell more and more iPods. I wonder if now that there are 140,000+ Apps, and Apple gets a 30% cut, that Apple has changed its model and is using the money they'll make from more app sales to decrease their margins on the hardware? Interesting.

I'm on the fence, I'm not hating it, but I'm not loving it either.

On one hand, I can see myself using it, but on the other hand, why do I want this when my MBP can do this and more. Yes a larger form factor but it runs all the apps I need and want.

it looks GORGEOUS!

but why do i need an oversized iphone that cant do as much as my iphone can?

right, i dont.

Ill keep my 3GS and month old unibody white macbook...together they are much more productive than a iPad.

Oh yeah, and so is my $300 Dell Mini 10v with os x...i have flash and a full fledged computer!

I posted this on another forum and it's applicable here since you seem so focused on lack of Flash.

Flash is a proprietary product from Adobe. While the browsing experience might be limited by lack of Flash, this should show you how pervasive this technology is.

The future is HTML5:

"HTML5 aims to reduce the need for proprietary plug-in-based rich Internet application (RIA) technologies such as Adobe Flash, Microsoft Silverlight, and Sun JavaFX."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTML5

Flash is very 1998, .. time to move on..

I think Apple is forward thinking and hoping Flash will die a miserable death and the web will continue to move away from crap like Silverlight and Flash.

Bad poll subject as well. Someone doesn't have to be 'impressed' to buy it. I'm not impressed, its basically a giant iPhone, but I certainly will buy one. It will find a nice place in the family and get used alot.

Edit: I went back and read alot of previous posts, WOW,.. alot of complaints about lack of Flash. I'm putting my money that the web will change (and already has) and will move to more H264 encoded content.
