I am really surprised that Apple didn’t have any more upscale models available on launch day. I have always been able to get a high-spec’d MacBook Pro on launch day, but with the Mac Studio there wasn’t anything but the base model Max and Ultra.

I was expecting to get a 64-core GPU, 128 GB RAM model with either 2 or 4 GB SSD on opening day. I instead went ahead with the base model Ultra and have not been disappointed in it, but would like to get more internal storage. The current wait for the maxed-out Ultras, however, is now out until early July, so I think I’ll just stick with what I’ve got and add an, albeit slower, external SSD to beef up the local storage.

The same for me. I did two externals.

For the last couple of days, all 12 NY Apple stores have the base Max, but none of them has had an Ultra.

I returned my Max base today and ordered one with 32 graphics cores, 64GB of memory and 2TB of storage. My estimated delivery is June 27 to July 11 :)

That sounds even worse than still waiting for original delivery.......having had one then take it back...o_O
You are very patient.....;)

How did you like it, and why did you decide on the upgrade...
So you could be waiting up to 3.5 months.....

After two weeks of use, I think that the Mac Studio/Max is going to be a great computer for my needs. I'll be using it in two countries, and one of the attractions is that I can stuff it in the overhead bin on a plane.

Upgrading the storage to 2TB is in the "want to do" category, not "need to do". It will let me cut the umbilical cord to external drives, except for backup, for almost everything.

I upgraded to 64GB of memory because I use Logic Pro with virtual instruments such as Spitfire Audio's BBC Symphony Orchestra. This use is very demanding of short-term memory; 32GB is adequate, but 64GB makes life easier.

I also use Final Cut Pro and DaVinci Resolve, and I figure that increasing graphics cores from 24 to 32, while not necessary, "couldn't hurt"; and the cost was relatively low given what I was already spending on additional storage and memory.

I'm hoping that Apple is being very cautious about delivery commitments and that I'll get the new computer this month. No? :)

I am torn between the base model options and what I’d prefer.

This is exactly the position that I was in. As I hope is clear from post #256, the base Max would have worked for me. I didn't have to upgrade. I decided, based on what I learnt from two weeks of experience with the Max, that I wanted to upgrade. I also decided that I could live with waiting to get what I think is a better configuration for my uses.

Cost was also a consideration. I didn't make the final decision to go with 2TB of storage instead of 1TB until just before I entered an Apple store this afternoon to make the return and a new order.

Having now made the order, I'm quite sure that upgrading to the new configuration was the right decision.

If that's what you want then just order it and wait for delivery.......?
Most stores around the world don't even have the base models.
Impatient I guess. I've been tempted several times to go to the Apple Store and buy the base Ultra model vs the Max just because it has 1TB.

Keep hammering Apples website for availability. That’s exactly how I got my MBP M1 Pro 16/1TB. I was facing that long wait, and then it appeared on the site, seemingly out of thin air. :). Hit the trigger.

When I picked it up they also had the iPhone 13 Pro Max I was trying to get. It wasn’t even showing available, but it hit the counter when I asked for it. So even if it’s not on the website, if you are close just drop in.

The Studio display is the delay here. I just ordered and it’s a 5 week estimated wait. I wonder if they are updating the camera.
I'm sure once Apple releases a software fix, all will be working.

In the meantime, I much prefer using the 11 year old Thunderbolt display that has the 720p FaceTime camera - it doesn't show every pore, pimple, hair out of place....

I hope it is just software and they update it.
My Studio Display came in on Friday and after watching all the review videos I figured it couldn't be *that* bad...but damn. It really is *that* bad in low light. :-( In good lighting it isn't too bad. But it does look like webcam technology from 10 years ago which is highly disappointing. That being said, I don't care at all about camera quality. The display looks and feels (and sounds) amazing in all other regards which is a huge win. Very happy with it in general!

I wonder if the demand for the Ultra is higher than expected, or the M1 Ultra SoC yields are lower than expected. All 12 stores within 450 miles of me (Pacific Northwest) show June 9 pickup availability, and ship to home shows May 24-June 8 (hence June 9 promise for store pickup).

Just glad I picked up mine opening day at the Apple Store and cancelled my delivery order for April that same day, or I would still be waiting now. But 2 month waits now seems really excessive for those that waited to pull the trigger on an order earlier.

As discussed earlier in this thread, the June 9 date that you're seeing is only the date if you order a base Ultra online today and want store pickup rather than home delivery. It does not mean that the store won't have base Ultras in stock and for sale before then. See posts #201 and #209. This is also discussed in a few other posts.

I checked our local BB stores and they claim they will have them for pickup on Friday. How do they get them 4 weeks faster than Apple?
Yes, Best Buy is receiving the monitors they ordered from Apple months ago sooner than you can order from Apple today.

I really wish they had a second Studio Max model for retail with a 1TB or 2TB drive.

I've checked repeatedly and that is the major issue. No Base Max 1TB available until late May. Was mid-May but it keeps pushing out. 7 weeks! They should have made this available to order with more immediate delivery, even if they don't stock it in store, it would be nice to see this config ship within a week if not sooner if they had only planned it in the pipeline.
