For those interested, it looks like Best Buy still has the base system and display available on the 23rd to ship out (probably quicker than Apple):

Anyone who bought the latest MacBook Pro online for in store pick up on launch day have any insights to share?

I’m curious what time next Friday I should be refreshing the page repeatedly at in an attempt at purchasing one same day for pickup. 12am local time? 8am? Etc. I’m located in New Jersey and there are a few Apple Stores I can trek to if need be.
I’m pretty certain it’s 8am local time. I vaguely recall going on the online store right at 8am and getting the only blue AirPods Max in the area on launch day.

I'm inclined to agree with a post in another thread saying that the Apple Store initial inventory (maybe also Best Buy's and B&H's) is already in, or on its way to, the U.S., and won't be affected by the Shenzhen Covid 19 lockdown.

I'm also inclined to think (going out on a limb here) that the basic versions of the M1 Max and M1 Ultra will be available on Friday in most Apple stores in decent, if limited, numbers. These aren't inexpensive computers, and I don't see any reason to believe that they will be "scarce". I think that the main question is whether variations on the basic configurations will be available, and, if so, which variations.

I’m thinking they might be scare in terms of actual quantities. Apple knows this isn’t a new iPhone, plus they are facing a chip shortage.

I mentioned this above already. In the past it’s been 8am ET.
So I'm curious on this... At 8:00am EST your Airpods showed available for pick up the day of launch correct? Did you check the night before and they were not available?

I'm trying to gauge when I should check to see if the studio in the configuration I want may be available.

Correct. I had checked at midnight and several times in the morning. I vaguely remembered from my days working Apple Retail that store inventory gets updated at 8am. Sure enough!

Thanks. Exactly what I was hoping the answer would be. Hoping the M1Max with 1TB ssd will be available in my area.

If I put a pickup request in on Friday, can I defer collecting it until Saturday?

If you've paid for it, of course. However, I doubt that a store will hold one for you until you go to the store the next day and make a decision about whether to buy.

Hands-on reviews of the iPhone SE were released yesterday, and reviews of the new iPad Air started this morning at 9 AM Eastern Daylight Time (1 PM GMT). Mac Studio reviews tomorrow?

Looks like Apple stores already have Mac Studios on site. An Apple store in France has accidentally delivered an M1 Max to a customer early: https://www.mac4ever.com/mac/169836-un-lecteur-a-deja-recu-son-mac-studio-photos-video-maj

The article was published yesterday. Note that it's in French.
Yes, I thought so!

Last time I ordered the M1 Mini - it was promised on launch day but never saw any movement on the Apple order track.
Then the night before launch day, FedEx & Apple alerted that the shipment went out.
Found out the Minis were already in country and got it delivered the next day on launch day.
It came from an AI warehouse in Rialto, CA.

All that worrying was not necessary

To avoid the worry this time, I am ordering mine for local Apple Store pickup at 5am (PDT).

The problem with in store p/up is that the base config is a M1 Max with 1TB SSD for $2,199 which Apple has inconveniently made a CTO machine. So you can’t just go get one in store. With the SSD speeds this thing boasts, you should not pick up a 512 model and go external on your storage. Upgrade to 1TB for the $200 and wait. Otherwise you have bought an expensive over performing machine with no storage.

I assume you meant to say that the base Max config is 512GB.

We'll see what happens with this release, but my own past experience is that Apple stores have one or two variations on the base machine at launch.

In another post, you say that your current computer is a 2014 Mac mini with 256GB of storage. I can see why you want more, but maybe be less assertive about telling other people that they need 1TB. Because I use my computer strictly as a workspace, I buy 512GB computers and typically have over 450GB of free space on my internal drive. That is plenty for my needs. This time, I'm considering a 2TB Mac Studio, but for specific, atypical reasons that I certainly wouldn't extrapolate to the needs of other people.
