I have this very very old iMac that had like 4GB of ram and it has been limping along for years. I could not even log into it as it kept getting stuck at iCloud enable. My son has been using it via the guest account, but it was time to put it out of its misery. I booted it up in recovery mode and erased the hard drive. I moved my LG 5K display into the area with the iMac as I got the Studio Display for my needs. Was thinking about getting a Mac mini for the area. But that M1 Max Studio Mac is calling my name. That's pretty much overkill for what it needs to do, but who knows what it'll need to do in the future. Sounds like a good excuse anyway.

If it's in your budget I would get the Max Mac Studio. I looked at the mini but I went with the (crazy I know) Ultra Mac Studio... it was whispering my name :)

I feel the same way.
Overkill for what I use the Mac for daily.

You should look at the more affordable M1 Mini - that's what I have been using without any complaints for the past year.

I traded in the Mini for the base Mac Studio.
Got a good deal ($370 trade in + $200 EDU + $50 Apple Card cash back) and it came out to $1400 spread out over 12 months at 0% interest....

The main reason I traded in my perfectly working Mini is the Studio can support more than 1 Thunderbolt display. I have the old 27" Thunderbolt and the new Studio Display which I want both to run (Mini can not).

What I am asking myself is what I would do with 32GB RAM!

No Ultras in Pittsburgh yet. Come on babyyyyy
By the time you wait for a base model, you could have one ordered in the system (3-4 weeks approx).....;)
Saying that, they have started to appear in UK Apple Stores for pickup.

Ah haaaaa, scored one earlier! :) I was worried you’d be right!

For what it’s worth, my 3x Pittsburgh stores definitely do update during the day. And for sure it seems a little random - I jumped on the store that was further away, then like 24 minutes later after placing the order, the closer store updated with stock. -_-

Of course, about 10 minutes later, all Studio Ultra stock was gone.

The Ultra base model is available everywhere in Austin, just ordered another one for pickup for my company. Too bad Costco doesn't have it in stock, another 2% executive plus Visa points would be slightly better than Apple Card cb.

Ugh my local store has both the max and ultra in stock. Dammit if only the max had 1tb. I have a 2tb nvme in my mac pro. Really want to get rid of my 5,1 mac pro. Just dont know if I want to pony up the money for the ultra.

They really should have at least 1 other configuration available in the stores other than the base models. I mean I get it not stocking 128gb/8TB models but they should at least have 1TB Max models in the stores.

I'm also surprised that the 1TB Max isn't available in Apple Stores. I think that this is going to generate a lot of returns combined with an order for the 1TB version. However, I spoke with an Apple "Sales Specialist" about this on Monday (post #179) and was told that the Stores will only be carrying the base models.

I just went to Apple.com and loaded up an Ultra and instead of saying 'Not available for pickup' as it did previously, it now says, 'Order now. Pick up in store or curbside:Mon, Jun 27 at Apple Millenia'.

Get the Max and add an external enclosure and a 1TB Samsung 980. You can do that for $150-200, the cost of the Apple 1TB upgrade price and end up with 1.5TB total storage. Sure the external storage will top out at 2500MB/s compared to the 7k+ on the internal, but is that a major concern? If so, order the 1TB Max and you'll have it soon enough. My guess is that the early May ship date is underpromise overdeliver and you'll have it sooner.

Agree - the base Max is a great value for me and I use many of my La Cie SSD 1TB drives to shuttle between machines.

My base Max picked up at the Apple Store was $1400 due to trade in, EDU and Apple Cash.
