Been testing the “Spell” and “Speak” functions and they are all over the place for me. Here’s some fun. Can some people carry out the following tests and describe their results?
Note that you will need Settings -> General -> Accessibility -> Speak -> Speak Selection turned on for this. I also have the default US female voice selected.
1) Select the word “the” above and choose “Speak”. This is a warmup, but report what word was spoken.
2) Select the word “quick” above and choose “Speak”. For me this says “The”. In fact it’s always one word behind!
3) Choose “Speak” again from the still present menu and verify it says “quick” now.
4) Select the word “iMessage” and choose “Speak”. For me it says “quick” again.
5) Choose “Speak” once again from the still present menu. Now it says “iMessage” in a weird male French sounding voice. No matter how many times I choose to speak that particular word it does this but...
6) Select the whole sentence and choose “Speak” twice in a row. First time it says “iMessage” in French accent again but the second time it speaks the whole sentence normally, including the word iMessage.
7) Choose any word from the text and select “Spell”. Like “Speak” it operates on the previous selection, though spell only reads the first word so it should spell “The”
I’d be grateful if one or more of you would try this out to see if my iPad is haunted

(and so I can write a cogent report)
