Wait, why don't people think iOS 12 will drop 5s?? At least one iPhone is dropped every version of iOS.

5/5c gone with iOS 11.

Making 5s next for iOS 12.

Thats my point. Its very similar, way underpowered, especially the big screen of the Plus, it won't be able to keep up.
Well , NOT every season . The iPhone 4s got iOS 8,9 .Iphone 3GS got iOS 5,6 . So, not every season an iPhone is dropped . At least now .Maybe iOS 11 will change that .
[doublepost=1493997864][/doublepost]
Not sure if I am following, so did the iPad 2...

iOS 10 killed off support for devices with less than 1GB.
iOS 11 will kill off 32bit
iOS 12 will kill off devices with less than 2GB.

Seems pretty straight forward.
So , iOS 9 should have killed devices with less than 1gb of ram. iOS 10 did

Yes, I stated that above. They made that mistake with the iPad 2 allowing it to live on. But I think they felt obligated because they were still selling it in 2015.

iOS 10 killed off 5 iOS devices. iPad 2 is the only device to receive the amount of updates that it did. You are telling me that the iPhone 6 will receive more updates than the iPad 2 even though it hasn't been sold in 2 years. It won't happen. It doesn't have the performance to keep up. As it is iOS 10 has seriously limited capabilities on 5/5c/iPad 4.

The only way the iPhone 6 supports iOS 12 is if it gets only the security updates and not a single new feature.

But as this thread is iOS 11. Its pretty obvious that 5/5c/iPad 4 are done.

They add an extra version every S model so far. Hence the 5s getting iOS 12. Not that far fetched considering the A5 chip ran iOS 4,5,6,7,8 and 9.

They never drop two generations of iPhones/chips at the same time. That would be a bad business decision causing inconsistent life cycles in the flagship product. The iPhone 6 will stick it out an extra year like the 4 did on iOS 7. That's my logic anyway. It's been right so far.

For iOS 11 I'm pretty sure they'll drop the 5/5c and anything else not 64-bit.

As I have outlined multiple times, the A5 is the ONLY chip to run that many versions of iOS. Its at most 4-5 version, and the A5 got 5.5 versions.

Whats worse for business, making a device completely unusable and angers a bunch of people, or dropping support a little early but the device still runs decently. The former is worse. I was furious that my iPad 2 got iOS 9. It made it worthless.

So they drop two generations of iPhone together in iOS 11. You disapprove your point in just a matter of seconds.

The 6 will get iOS 12 . Apple never dropped two iPhones at the same time .
And this time (iOS 11) they will.
Nothing is impossible.
Plus, Apple drops device based on processor, not generation.

5 and 5c have the same A6 chip. The A8 is actually slightly improved over the A7 so iPhone 5s and 6 are not the same. "Plus, Apple drops device based on processor, not generation." One of the reasons the iPhone 6 will stay on longer.

Which is worse, dropping support or slowing the device down is opinion based. The iPhone 6 Plus can't possibly be as bad as the iPhone 4 on iOS 7 lacking both RAM and processing power, same with 4s on iOS 9. Apple clearly isn't above giving updates the hardware can't fully handle.

The chips after the A5 are much more capable and resilient as well. Getting an extra year or two out of them isn't out of the question. The 4s and A5 is the most recent chip to extend the life cycle, before that it was the 3GS, we'll have to wait for iOS 12 to see if the A7 and 5s continues the pattern.

iPhone 5/5c features an A6 processor
5S -A7 processor
6- A8 processor
5s and 6 are almost indetical in processing power . So , it may be possible to drop 3 iPhones at once :5s,6,6Plus .

I can't imagine an iPhone 6 Plus running iOS 12.It will be a terrible experience. It will be more laggy, slow. Like iPhone 4S with iOS 9, or maybe worse .This phone already laggy since iOS 8. This phone is underpowered.

We don't know how iOS 12 will run on it though. The A8 is much more capable than the A5, there's not really a comparison. The iPad 3rd gen was also underpowered from the start and they kept it updated until they dropped the rest of the A5 devices.

With iOS 4, they made it run on the iPhone 3G even though it had the exact same specs as the original simply because it was newer. The iPhone 6 should be fine, it's only about half the processing power of the 6s and 7. As opposed to the 1/12 (12.5%) the 4s had vs the 6s, or 1/3 it had vs the 5. I don't think they'll drop the 6 just because of the 6 Plus. Obviously this is just my guess, not a fact.

iOS 10 runs pretty well on the iPhone 5/5c and I think this would be a good time to drop those devices from iOS 11, rather than supporting them and reducing performance further.

This would be ideal; I remember the clustercuss that resulted when Apple updated the iPhone 4 to iOS 7 and really brought its performance downhill. This left a lot of iPhone 4 devices with a mediocre user experience.

The 4S was also a bit hobbled with iOS 7 and worse with 8. They pretty much took both the 4 and 4s out back and shot them for us.

It looks like they won't be doing that this time around with the 5 and 5c. I certainly hope so; I want legacy devices to still be usable and fast! My mother has a 5C and if iOS 11 supports it, I will be telling her not to update.

No, the A5 chip got 6 versions, not 5.5, regardless if iOS 9 had limited features on that SoC. It still got it, hence 6 versions.

A5 didn't launch until March 11, 2011 with the iPad 2. iPad 2 launched with iOS 4.3. 9 months after iOS 4 came out.

Therefore, A5 got "5.5" versions of iOS. The only iOS versions A5 got were 4.3-4.3.5 of iOS 4. So you cannot count A5 getting all of iOS 4. If A5 came out in June 2010, then it would have gotten 6 full versions of iOS. But it did not. It only lived for 5 years 3 months, not 6 years.

Edit: It now that I think about it, after you mentioned it. It truly did get limited functionality of iOS 9. So the fact that it got 1/4 of iOS 4 and like half of iOS 9. It barely even got 5 fully function versions of iOS.

iOS 5 didn't release until October.

If the iPhone 5 was 64-bit I think it might be powerful enough for another release. But Apple wants to get rid of 32-bit so I doubt it, it's not an S model either. The only thing in its favor would be the 5c and I doubt that'll be enough.

Okay so it got 6 of 18 months. My point still stands. The A5 wasn't created for iOS 4. It was created for iOS 5. It just happened to launch a few months earlier.

Apple saw the mistake to update the iphone 4s to IOS 9. Consider this fact, I think IOS 11 will be the end of the line for Iphone 5S and A7 devices. Otherwise, if Iphone 5S gets an extra year , The "Iphone 5S and other A7 devices will be the next A5". IOS 12 will kill these devices if they will be compatible.

The iphone 3GS got IOS 5,6 and perfomed better than iphone 4S. So, Apple tought that would be the same thing. So,The 4S got an extra year like the 3GS , and IOS 9 made iphone 4s more slower. Now , I think Apple saw the mistake and an extra year for S models will not matter anymore.

Ipad Air 2 and Iphone 6S will be the longevity models IMO.

I think it may have been the opposite, the A5 was always intended to last for a relatively long period of time but the technology jumped too dramatically for it to keep up once they started building their own CPU with the A6. iOS 7 and up were designed mostly with A6 and up in mind. Maybe Apple stuck to the original plan for the A5 with future devices in mind. The 5s/A7 has the processing power to handle more updates as long as there isn't a huge jump again.

The iPhone 5 already runs circles around the 4s and 4 on iOS 10 in comparison to their last OSes. Pretty impressive considering the 4 only got four versions of iOS.

Well
Iphone 3gs - 4 IOS versions
Iphone 4S -5 IOS versions
Iphone 5S - 5 or 6 ?
Only time will tell , but lets speculate !!!
