The reason why they moved on was to have something newer and different. It doesn't necessarily mean anything one way or another about the previous design (aside from it having been in use for some time and people being used to it).

Kind of like many design and aesthetic elements making returns throughout time in one form or another? Something that is subjective is just that.

"Newer" is another word for "not ugly" :D

1) Bring back Forstall.

Don't let him touch the UI... however allow him to be his good old obsessive self regarding software quality, performance, and battery life. Yes, you can positively impact software quality, performance, and battery life without having control of the UI design... it's just harder. Challenge accepted should be the attitude.

I say they threw the baby out with the bathwater on that one. He should have been de-scoped (less or no UI influence,) and if that made him want to leave, throw money at him.

2) Fix notifications.

I have to sit and wait 5 minutes to use my phone.

Why? Well that's problem number 2. Notifications ALWAYS pop up over what I need to touch, the split second I need to touch it, so that an app I don't want to be in opens in the middle of something important.

I know I can turn notifications off... but if we could have a small part of the screen dedicated to notifications and a little creative design... the problem wouldn't exist.

I also don't care to spend endless time configuring types of notifications, when, etc etc to solve the above issue. The default version/settings of notifications should be tolerable out of the box.

Some icons are excessively skewmorphic, but oh boy, do they look good. Camera, Wallet, Videos, Reminders, Safari and Music are master pieces
I like that style, it makes the device feel alive instead of feeling like it exists because it has to. That's why I like 6 and older and OS X Mavericks and older. They look so crisp and clear on high res displays, provide such a nice experience, and feel alive and happy to be there.

Interesting that most of the expectations here are really only minor tweaks. Operating systems are really reaching maturity now, there's not a whole lot of major features to add like there was years ago. Curious to see whether Apple has some bigger changes in mind to fundamentally change the iOS experience.

It doesn't matter what you think. That ugly **** is history and will never ever get back in iOS.

Good that the people who think it look good don't make the decision :D
Seems like they did for quite a few years. Given how design works, it will likely be back yet again in some iteration at some point down the line.

Here is also a nice topic with loads of feature wishes. I especially would love to see these things implemented in iOS11:

Here is my top 3:
08. Customisable control center
05. Multiple user accounts on iPad
31. Wi-Fi network priorities, like in macOS.

But it was really hard to pick out these three because I do want and hope to see all the below (16 + 3 of myself in iOS11. See the three I would like to see as well below:

* Finally build in a word sliding/swiping feature in Apple's own keyboard (so we won't have to use 3rd party ones like Swype, Gboard, Swiftkey) which tend to be buggy either by the API or by third parties
* Have a good search feature / a way to (de)select apps from the Slide Over/Split View supported apps list
* Kind of like 07. to make URL schemes mandatory for each app and preferabbly also actions within apps so you can easily launch those via other apps or e.g. widgets such as Launcher / Magic Launcher. Instead Apple recently started asking developers to remove the URL schemes to Settings features :(
* a proper way of cache cleaning per app without deleting an app. Some apps do already have this features but others where I definitely want to see it like the horrible Facebook app don't have it.

As far as 90. I think indeed that Apple should finally implement that you can see a full day appointment in your calendar widget. I'm currently using a third party widget for that. Also I'm missing the support for Google's calendar way of address and showing travel time (in minutes/hours) and distance. It now only works with an Apple calendar but I can't easily access that via iCloud to add appointments on a (Windows) laptop/desktop. I'm currently using a third party calendar instead (Week Calendar).

01. Ability to change default apps for Mail, Calendar, Contacts, ...
02. Widgets on lock screen, like Complications on watchOS.
03. Multi-tasking multiple instances of same app
04. Drag and drop between apps in split view on iPad
05. Multiple user accounts on iPad
06. Secure individual apps or documents with password or Touch ID
07. Some type of Finder or easier way of letting apps access each others files
08. Customisable control center
09. Force Touch in control center to select WiFi network, Bluetooth device, ...
10. Dark mode
31. Wi-Fi network priorities, like in macOS.
39. Weather on iPad
40. Calculator on iPad (too much to ask for a Graphing Calculator like Mac OS of old?)
82. Make it more usable for people who only use their local downloaded library, no Apple Music
86. Offline Maps
90. Just start paying some active attention to these Calendar/Reminder apps rather than keeping them so basic

Keep dreaming. Will never happen. No GUI design in history of smartphone and computer reuses

It's not like the current minimalistic/flat/bright design is something new, or that skeuomorphic was something new--the particular implementations of course are generally new, but the concepts and overall design approaches are often enough something that has existed in some fashion before.

I never said it´s new but it´s a hell a lot better than the other ****.
You can argue how much you want but that **** will never ever come back to iOS.
There is a reason he was fired and they dumped it.
Because it´s ugly and obsolete.

1. Full RAW support in the native Camera app. Shooting RAW is just so much more satisfying than shooting standard JPEG with that nasty nasty heavy noise reduction.

3. Ability to arrange the icons in whatever way we want. What's the point of having a custom wallpaper if the icons just cover it all up? Smh

4. Redesigned dock, the current one is just flat out dated and ugly.

5. DARK ***** MODE!

Why don't you just change the notifications to appear as banners at the top of the screen instead??
Problem solved.

Pretty sure there was much more to it all than getting fired over design of iOS, a design that was there for iOS for years with many people being happy about it. It got stale over time simply as things naturally do, but that doesn't make it bad as far as design goes. Sure some people find it ugly and all that, just as some find the current design ugly too, or many other designs...that's kind of neither here nor there.

I love how you are basically saying the world is ugly. The old design was based off the world and real objects, not this pitiful color pencil and blank website design we have now, which I may remind you caused iOS to loose its ease of use, logic and experience overall. I continue to use iOS 6 and laugh when I see another UI change that starts to mimic the old designs. The notification bubbles, widgets, and Control Center in iOS 10 is already starting to shift back in design. Heavy shadows and more pronounced elements. Candy to my eyes. It's only a matter of time now and we'll see it reappear. You can't tell me that the experience of OS X Snow Leopard is better than Sierra, it's completely different and the laziness that is killing Apple at the moment is really starting to show, bugs are everywhere and new major updates just feel like extension packs for the previous version. It's sad, it really is. I still don't understand why iOS 6 still performs on par or above iOS 10 with normal tasks with a smoother and cleaner experience and the same story goes for Mavericks VS Sierra.

Right now Apple probably would benifit tremendously if they brought back Forstall. If they did that, iOS and macOS would go back to the clean, simple, smooth and snappy experience we used to have.

My expectations: streamline, streamline, streamline.

Long gone are the days where Apple creates software that "just works", or better yet is easy and intuitive to understand.

Still make the best hardware, but their software game has TOTALLY bombed. Fix it with iOS 11, please.

In 5 days, we'll have iOS 11 on our devices! Definitely looking forward to it.

Probably not because the actual reason for flat and non-skeuomorphic designs is to get the UI out of the content you want to see/use/etc. Together with current IT-trends like AI we won't see that coming back ever again. I'm 99 % sure.

Back on topic: I find it very interesting that we haven't heard better seen anything how iOS 11 will be and look like. Definitely feels different than last years.

I really hope to see Dark mode coming and the ability to adjust the icons anywhere on the screen (also smaller please). Bring back notification more like iOS 7-9 or at least, darker than what we have now. In other words, just fix the mess you did with system wide notifications on iOS 10 and it would be a good start.

If not, I'll just continue to be on the 10.2 jailbreak.
