It’s been a mess since iOS 7. iOS 8 was also a mess until 8.3 and even then it still had issues. Same story with iOS 9, same with iOS 10... it is so consistently bad that I ended up going to the dark side (Android). I still use my 6S which I have just updated to 11.3. It is better than previous versions of 11, although that isn’t really saying much.

Every single version since iOS 7 has had frame rate issues, it no longer runs at a solid consistent 60fps like it did with iOS 6. It’s a shame most people in here have forgotten what that feels like, which is probably why they still think iOS is “smooth”. When you have an iPhone 5 on iOS 6 like I still do, and compare it today’s iOS running on the latest iPhones even though the processors and RAM etc have vastly improved, it is still smoother. What does that tell me? It tells me that the software has took a nosedive in quality since Forstall was fired. Having a hardware guy like Jony take over software has proven to be a disaster. I understand Craig is also behind iOS these days, which makes it even worse since he’s a software guy. He and his team just aren’t as good at their job has Forstall and his team were.

Home button delay is still there. No issues with iPhone X but I will never forgive Apple for ruining a great phone. My iPad Pro is still on iOS 10 and it stays there forever.

I’m thinking of doing the same. I’ve had enough of it. It like you buy a new device and for half of the year you own it, it is in beta form. That’s assuming they manage to fix everything in 6 months. With iOS 11 I doubt they will ever fix it. The new 11.3 just broke carplay with wasn’t working all that well to begin with but it worked most of the time. Now it disconnects in the middle of every connection. This product has gone useless. My concern with using android is having google on my backside constantly. Are there ways to use android without being signed into google constantly?

I wish they would redesign the music app. It's just plain ugly, and has been for a long time now.

Other than that 11.3 seems to be pretty good, but jury is out on battery life still. Was really good on 11.6.2 though.

I installed iOS 11.3 via DFU mode and iTunes from scratch on my iPhone 6s and set the phone up as new. Finally it's not lagging any more with every tap and I can scroll in apps without lags! iMessages seem to be in order again. Before, the answers to my texts showed ABOVE my initial text oO

“You will never forgive Apple”, what does even mean? Other than specter and meltdown vulnerabilities iOS 10 is great.

It was a great phone they ruined with their shoddy updates. It went from 1.5 days battery life and a perfect home button to barely lasting a day and a delay which drives me up the wall every time I try to use it. Thanks to their incompetence I am not buying any of their budget products ever again until they give them the respect they deserve.

Spectre and meltdown is only a consideration if I can use the device properly. If I upgrade to iOS 11, reduced battery life and stuttering on a 120hz screen is a virtual certainty. It's a trade off between security and performance/battery life. I happily chose the latter. I don't want to replace the battery earlier than expected.

iOS 11 is so bad, even Apple acknowledged it by turning iOS 12 into a performance update with no new features. We need a complete OS overhaul to fix this mess.

Ok, so you are only going to buy flagship products from here on out. My comment on the home button on my i7, is was working fine on iOS 11 and was working fine on iOS 10.

My 6s has great battery life on iOS 11.3, although, tbh, it’s better on 11.3 than 11.2.

Good luck and hopefully you can avoid specter and meltdown.

As far as iOS 12, nobody knows what or why Apple said what they said, and their rationale could be quite different than your “interpretation “ (or bias) on the matter.

My relatively aged 5S is on 11.3, sure it's a wee bit slow and I've turned off much of the eye candy as I don't like it, but it's never let me down, will play video, make calls, do email, Whatsapp and browse etc without issues. I don't have the home button issue people describe. Battery lasts 1.5 days, at least.

I'm not just another fanboy however, I do have plenty to say to Apple about their progressive abandonment of pro-users for starters.

I never install any OS/IOS updates until they are thoroughly "cooked", a habit of mine since the dawn of processor based technology. I occasionally wipe and re-install too, strangely I've had very few issues in umpteen decades of heavy pro use.

That's not the explanation for it. I just tried double clicking the home button on iOS 10 and I don't see any jump animation prior to the app switcher. I compared both iOS 10 and 11 here. It's just an excuse because the button is designed to wait a split second for the second press to app switcher even on iOS 10. iOS 11 just takes this too far with a 1 second delay.
My iPhone 7 has no such 1 second delay. You may have defective hardware.

My 5s on 11.3 is clearly slower than my 6s and that’s where the age shows, but with 11.3 it’s pretty zippy in its own right. Since it’s my backup phone it’s been on the betas do I have a view of the quality of these releases.

Except it's not even close to a 1 second delay, as even you yourself have mentioned in the past. And your perception of it seems to be different than that of others.

Technically it's probably around 0.5-0.6 seconds but it feels like 1 second especially when I compare it with the iPad on iOS 10. Each and every home button iphone I have handled has this delay.

You should use an iPhone X or an iPhone running iOS 10 for a day or two and then try using the iOS 11 home button. There's a huge difference. I use an iPhone X, iPad Pro simultaneously and whenever I use the iPhone 7 Plus, the difference is instantly noticeable.

On my i7 if there is a delay it’s not noticeable. In fact I never heard any discussion about a delay except on these forums and Youtube videos that don’t show anything except human error.

No mess here works just fine. Don’t like it move to something else. Plus post lost all credibility with the mention of Steve Jobs.

It was a mess when it came out, which was when the OP posted

11.3 is very stable, very smooth and nice, but it's a bit of a shame it took about 7 months following the 3 months of summer beta to get to this stage

Oh well. Here's to hoping iOS 12 really is about stability and performance first.

by any chance do you have accessibility home button short cuts added? I accidentally had that on my 6s and I had a delay...but took them off and the home button reacts very fast

Impressive! I don't have a 5s anymore, but I absolutely loved that phone. One of my favourite iPhones. I had it replaced with an SE that served me well, and still serves well as a travel phone (that Plus model level battery life is incredible in that form factor)

To make your phone last that long, do you use it normally? Or do you turn off certain things like bluetooth, LTE, location services? I used to be able to make my 5s run quite long, easily a day, but I had to turn a bunch of those features off (i presume that's what you meant by eye candy)

Back in September when the OP posted, 11 was a mess. 11.3 today is fine for me.

Well mine has never been a mess then or now. I guess I'm just lucky

Same. Been running 11 since 11.0b3 (or 4). Yeah, in the beta it had a few bumps, but since then, nothing noteworthy enough to complain about. It's been a great phone/iOS so far!

A simple Google search reveals plenty of people have this problem and those who did have dealt with it by either getting the iPhone X or simply grin and bear it. The Youtube video in question is 100% accurate as regards showing the effects as if you see his other videos where he compares 2 iOS 11 versions, this effect is never observed.

Apple has given up on the home button iPhones at this point as even the budget model will use gestures this year and considering the fact that the new iPad Pro will also use gestures, its a given the 2017 iPad Pro is next on the chopping block. They will probably cripple another aspect of it to get those users to upgrade. I am staying on iOS 10 till 2019 which is probably when I get the next iPad with an OLED display running iOS 13

I, for one cannot tolerate that home button. Its a deal breaker to me and if Apple didn't have the iPhone X in the lineup I would have jumped ship to Android.
