The folks to who are update ludites should move on to another platform, lol. I hear android phones typically don’t get updates, I would start there! Personally I have never had an update issue and no one I know has either. I think this forum concentrates the crazies.

Move to android

Isn’t an argument for poor quality software

Especially for people who were happy until a certain update

Or you could just cook the steak properly and I could stay where I am? And get what I thought I asked for?

I like updates, I updated to the new versions of iOS on the first day every year besides iOS 9. iOS 11 is crap, it doesn’t even run smoothly on a 10.5 inch iPad Pro.

if you’re on 10.3.3 currently i’d advice you don’t update your device as ios 11 is filled with bugs and lags .
REASONS
1. apps aren’t running as expected like they were before the update
2. app launch time is slower
3. battery life is bad
4. slowness across the whole os
5. you can’t downgrade back to ios 10.3.3 if you update your device to 11

So if you plan on holding onto an older iPhone for a while, you probably shouldn’t update. Just keep ignoring those prompts from Apple if you don’t want your phone’s performance to take a hit.

with ios 11 everything is slower not faster !
Bugs and lags are peculiar to iphone 5s, iphone 6, iphone 6s , iphone SE and iphone 7 users

Works fantastic on my iPhone 8 and IPad Mini 4.

I think that the majority of those populating this forum are, by definition, Apple enthusiasts who view the whole Apple world as an ongoing battle for perfection. Each update is minutely examined and the "flaws" are blown up, perhaps out of all proportion, to their real seriousness.

My iPhones (2x32gb SE) and two iPads are tools and they perform well. I freely profess to not understanding most of what those criticising are even talking about !

The rest of us just get on using these tools quite successfully.

Perhaps I am on the wrong forum.

Perhaps you have a hardware problem.

I've used 100s of iPads on iOS 11 because of my work, they all lag and jitter.

I'm more than happy to say most wouldn't even notice the jitters that drive me crazy.

I noticed that tinder can crash whole ios11 when runs in background. Probably reinstalation of tinder helps but still testing it.

Right?

The whole "Don't like the updates bruh? Go leave to Android then!" argument is childish and lazy.

Of course the next smartphone I purchase years from now will be from a manufacturer who is more transparent and doesn't silently cripple phones via updates the way Apple does... but in the meantime that doesn't excuse just how bad iOS 11 works on older devices or Apples recent shady behavior.

Fix your software Apple! Focus more on maintaining good performance (even in older models) instead of so much attention on nonsense like animojis

Agreed!

Apple has more than enough resources to support older models of their installed phone base, and it would make good sense to keep these legacy users happy for the eventual upgrades and "not to switch platforms". Most legacy phone users are probably using many other apple products as well and the cost of pushing upgrades on iPhone's will impact future purchases in other areas like ATV, iTunes, iPads, and especially MAC's

Why not sign and support older iOS versions? and not use "security" as an excuse to push everyone forward to a new iOS and thus a new phone

R&D for cars, new emolji, AI, homekit, are fine but how about showing some loyalty and appreciation for, past buyers and supporters of Apple?

100’s? What job requires using 100’s of iPads etc? Seriously curious.

Beautiful post mikzn. You put it much better than I could have. Wish you were running the iOS R&D department as we would all be taken care of better than we currently are.

I've been an Apple customer for the last 8 years (3Gs -> 4s -> 5s -> 6s), but I've gotta say I'm getting tired of the planned obsolescence way of things. The throttling scandal recently and Apples non-response just pushed me a little further away toward the Android side of things. I'll keep my 6s on 10.3.3 and stick with it until a year or two when Apple artificially degrades its performance.

Who knows what the smartphone landscape will be at that time but if I had to pick a phone today I most likely would go with a Samsung device?

Of course, this could all be fixed if Apple was simply transparent and customer friendly... but I'm not holding my breath l that one ;)

I think a lot of people are missing the big picture here. Security updates are necessary to be protected on mobile devices. Apple pushes these updates which can have a performance penalty due to the age of the hardware. Newer phones have more cores or higher clock speeds that help to alleviate this if used properly. I had an octocore Android Phone at 1.4ghz and it ran mediocre. The software wasn’t optimized for the cpu. You find this a lot with Android phones. Phones that can run stuff but isn’t optimized for a fluid experience. At least iOS it is optimized. 11.x may not be what you’re expecting but Apple can at least make it survive. Try opening apps on Android mid phones. It takes a bit but when compared to iOS it’s downright slow. iOS is fantastic and though phones age and slow down at least Apple lets you get your money’s worth.

How is ios 11 on iphone 7 now? Does it still have the home button delay? I'm on 10.3.3 and don't know if I should update. I wasn't planning to update unless ios got a dark mode.

Works fantastic on my iPhone 8 and IPad Mini 4.

That is the really sad thing. It (11.2.2) does run better on my Mini4 than my 7+ and IPP 12.9.
That is crazy stuff.
[doublepost=1516161389][/doublepost]Started using a Razer as my new daily driver. The issues with my 7+ have reached a tipping point.
Still, I will keep on with my IPP as I have not found a decent alternative.

RIP 7+. I will miss you. And I won’t.

You don't even know what processor you were using. 1.4ghz what processor? Is it Snapdragon 435 or MediaTek processor?

Take my Xiaomi Redmi 4X as example. It has Snapdragon 625, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage. Priced at 300CAD. MIUI 9 runs on this phone very smoothly. No lag, app launch very fast, animation feel very natrual and responsive. In fact, app launches as fast as iPhone.

You take one god know what Android phone and made conclusion that Android is not optimized... That is very convincing....

Please show proof that "Android devices don't get update"?

Galaxy S8 gets Android Oreo. My Xiaomi Android One phone gets Android Oreo and monthly security updates. My Huawei P10 and P10 Lites gets Android November Updates. How exactly Android devices do not get update?

Please stop this crap... This is simply not true

It is true, go look at fragmentation on android due to lack of upgrade paths and delays. If you are a software developer you can largely target one or maybe two versions of iOS. On Android good luck. Almost no on has the latest and most people are 3-4 versions back.

Last I looked less than 1 percent of android users were on the latest version while 52% of iOS users are. 85% of iOS users are on the latest two releases.

Having an android device older than two years still getting updates is rare. It is expected and normal for iOS devices.

I took the plunge with my 7 about a week ago from 10.3.3. Still has the home button delay but it really doesn’t bother me. And they got rid of the input blocking in the middle of the closing animation so you can touch icons and they spring open rather than waiting for the animation to finish like the iOS 7-8 days. This feels like an ok trade off.

Speed wise it’s very similar to 10.3.3. Some third party apps open a titch slower but all built in apps load a titch faster than before except the podcasts apps for me. In day to day usage it feels just a little bit slower than 10.3.3 but nothing major.

My battery life has been exactly the same on 11.2.2 or maybe even a little better than 10.3.3 with my same usage habits. Stability of the phone has been the same as well. I haven’t noticed any app crashes and zero resprings. Ram management is maybe a little bit worse with some apps having to reload maybe a bit more frequently but that again too is barely noticeable since apps load up pretty fast anyway.

The one big surprise for me is that my cellular performance has gotten better. Every where I go I’ve been getting a stronger signal and in places I used to barely get signal that would barely work and now I get useable signal that I didn’t have before. So whatever they changed with cellular performance from 10.3.3 to iOS 11 it’s definitely for the better.

I’d say if you are happy with 10.3.3 sure stay there but you’ll be missing out on security and the latest features of iOS 11. Id say it’s an ok update for the 7 and most people should be fine. I’m a very picky one and notice all the changes and even I’m happy with iOS 11. My wife has the 8 plus and my phone feels very similar to hers. Maybe a titch slower but hardly noticeable.

What are you expected with iOS update? Annual slow down? I know my iPhone 6S runs like crap with iOS 11.

I would rather have no update and my devices running greatly than continuing annual slow down.
