But will this put us on path to use regular updates moving forward or is the GM "stuck" in beta mode.
Barring any glitches, the GM is the public release. It has no "mode" attached to it. You were able to get it today because of the beta profile on your phone. Remove that and you will glide through public release day on likely the very same software as comes out that day. If its not the same, you will be prompted to update to the publicly released version.

If you leave the download running it will speed up, just like a torrent. Look at my MacRumors join date - been doing this kind of thing for a while now with OSX,

Why do you think that? Many of us didn’t expect the shortcuts app before the public release of iOS 12. Is there news that Shortcuts won’t be released then either?

Lol I think it’s going to be released as a “3rd party app” on the Store. I wanted it to be natively included too but I guess just updating the actual Workflow app is what will happen? *shrugs*

Given that Apple never released Shortcuts as part of a beta build and only made it available as a separately downloadable app from TestFlight (with an invite), I don't think it was reasonable to expect it to be part of the iOS 12 GM build. At the same time, I see no reason why it will not release either on the 17th, either. I've seen no negative statements about how its working (nor experienced anything negative while using it, aside from a few times a widget Shortcut won't fire).

Patience!!!

(and for those who say "its easy for you to say, you've had access to it" I respond: It's so similar to Workflow that having access to it has not been remarkably dissimilar to having Workflow)
