I feel like I should post this on twitter so that I can get a whole article posted about the facts that I’m about to make.

iOS 13.1 GM will be released on Tuesday at Apples event.
iOS 13.1 GM build will not be the version that’s released to the public but a future build even beyond the GM. Similar to what I believe iOS 9 was. When iOS 9 GM was released. We was on the boards saying that this build is not ready for public consumption. Sure enough. On iOS 9 public release, everything was magically fixed and was a different build than the GM

iOS 9 GM’s 2 different ones were due to on release of the GM to the developers, a major issue was discovered, which led to a different GM to the public. So, that’s not really a good example.

Hang on, I got my wires crossed, I thought so 9 was the release where we got 2 GMs before release. Ignore my post as it’s not relevant to that post I relied to. Apologies.

no biggies! It happens. I think the release that had 2 GMs was iOS 5 or iOS 6.. I could be wrong though

However, the GM should be available much before that. I hope to be on the iOS 13 GM next week.

I won’t be touching the iOS/iPadOS 13.1 betas on my main iDevices.

13.1 will likely not be the GM. It’s going to be 13.0 beta 8 (or slightly later).

I believe we will all be on 13.1 GM next week. No 13.0 GM. 13.1 beta should be considered an iteration of 13 beta. We are essentially on beta 10 right now.

Mark my words.

FWIW, because I present both sides, James Thompson, who develops PCalc, believes it will be a 13.0 GM with 13.1 a few weeks later. I still disagree but he may be in a good position to know.

I think the most logical thing would be an iOS 13 GM release as ipsw only, just like the first 13.0 betas. This way the 13.1 beta cycle wouldn’t be interrupted and it fits the ‘GM is for developers only’ story.

Logical for who, lol? There are lots of public beta testers out there, including me. I can upload an IPSW file, but for that I need to at least be able to “see” my iOS device, which my Mojave running MacBook does not at the moment. So it is either iOS 13 GM OTA for me, or bye-bye beta profile and see you all when the official iOS 13 is out.

Your first mistake is believing you are entitled to a smooth ride to GM. Apple explicitly mentions that you‘re on your own when installing the beta on a device of yours you rely on. There are several warnings, including a point where they tell you to back up and to restore if things go south. They also mentioned that restoring requires new software.

Understood. I am of Apple’s “thrill seeker” category. :p To add some more excitement, I am running betas on my main devices. This is exactly why I started using iOS 13 betas from PB6 and am currently still running iOS 13.0 PB7, having skipped any iOS 13.1 betas so far. Depending on what comes on Tuesday, 10 Sep, I will either install iOS 13 GM (whatever it is based on) or, if I cannot install it, remove my beta profile altogether and wait for the public release. Either way is fine by me.

So you are thinking just a release around the time the new iPhones hit store shelves
I guess so. Key word is "guess".

The annoying part is Sidecar will be available in iPadOS 13 weeks before that, but you won't be able to make use of it without Catalina.

I think Mojave came out the Monday after the phone was released, so I’d expect Catalina to be out on 23rd September

Never mind Sidecar, without Catalina we won’t even be able to restore our iOS devices, thus flushing any previous beta code. Hopefully iOS 13 and Catalina won’t come out too far apart.

I’d not be surprised if there’s some Mojave update to allow people using that can deal with iOS devices on iOS 13.

I think iOS 13.1 will be the GM for iOS 13 release since there are only one iOS 13 beta profile and Apple will seed the GM next Tuesday to the devices have the iOS 13 beta profile. As we all know, it is impossible to downgrade via OTA (,and wiping the whole device storage). Therefore, the GM build must have a build number same as or ahead of the iOS 13.1 beta 2 build number.

Moreover, 13.1 betas have "A" in the build number unlike the previous X.1 betas that have "B" in the build number. It indicates that 13.1 betas are in the same branch with the iOS 13.0 betas.

Probably, iOS 13.1 will be the release. This seems like unusual but 10.0.1 was the GM for iOS 10. Naming the release 13.1 makes sense because there are features such as Automations packed into 13.1 which were disabled in iOS 13.0.

I want to add that: my guess is the final release or GM release note in Settings->General->Software Update section will just display "iOS 13" as software update rather than iOS 13.1. However, after you install the update if you check the version, it will display iOS 13.1 in the Settings->General->About page.

iOS 10 GM was iOS 10.0.1, but the update was shown as just "iOS 10".

Good point. Sounds likely to me.

that’s why I personally think that Catalina will be released when iOS 13 is released... theirs just too much going on and everything needs the latest on both sides.. side car, new music app, Apple TV, Apple TV +, Siri automations, Apple Arcade, side car.. plus the iCloud changes...

I agree. Whatever shows up will most likely be a 13.0/13.1 17Axxx build with a name being whatever Apple wants to call it. Being that 13.1 in its current form is technically a 13.0 build using the current 13.0 profile and versioning scheme they can roll out whatever they want and it will update all users on build 17A5831c or lower. So folks on current 13.0 or 13.1 betas will have no trouble updating. Whether they choose to label it 13.0 or 13.1 is debatable. IF they label it 13.0, I suspect the next 13.1 beta build will move to the normal 17Bxxxx build versioning to reflect a true x.X update.
