You saved yourself with the qualifier. But why even comment on it? The re-indexing thing is a well known phenomenon. If it’s happening after 2-3 days, then it’s a thing. Until then, it’s really not.

Please, stop spreading this indexing lie. It’s not possible that your phone takes up to 3 days indexing. It should be completed the first night when you’re charging it.

There is no evidence that iPhones take this long to index stuff, especially when the device has already been set up!

The only change I see from this 14.4 release is the introduction of stutter on iPad Pro 10.5 even while scrolling simple webpages in Safari. Planned Obsolescence taking birth again. Terrible.

Can I ask if anyone updating to the iPadOS 14.4 also has issues with their iPad just not getting to finalizing the install.
The message on my iPad is in Danish so I'm paraphrasing in English "Your iPad will restart when the update is done"

I began updating around 1pm and now it's close to 3pm here in Denmark and the iPad hasn't finalized the installation of iPadOS 14.4. Does anyone know the solution here? I've attached my iPad to my computer right now, but nothing's changing.
Edit.. just put my iPad in Recovery Mode to see if that does anything.
2nd Edit: nope, iPad dead. Full iPadOS restore only solution. Unknown Error code 9.
Thanks, Apple. This was just because you saw me install macOS Mojave, wasn't it.. you ---you. Computer company.

Mine, finish update from 14.3 around 6am today. Comparing idle Window on 00-05am (14.3) versus 7pm-9pm (14.4), 14.4 is more flat (less battery drain) than 14.3.

From my experience, the iphone can index for 3 days but that certainly means something is wrong or stuck. If it is still indexing after the first night, I would try to troubleshoot / find the culprit. it's usually messages that gets stuck for me

Fractional bug fixes rate a jump from 14.3 to 14.4, rather than a 14.3.x?

Looks like the boffins at Apple are running out of ideas. They need to be working at the donut again, rather than at their kitchen tables.

Not even something there that is irrelevant and sparkly - a 'Squirrel!' moment to distract from the lack of product.

How do you see what's being indexed?

Seems to be the case. To be honest, I'd rather they stop piling features into iOS as it seems to have reached a point where they can't keep it balanced with acceptable performance. I'd love to be able to go back to earlier versions where the OS isn't so weighed down and complex. Can you imagine running iOS 6 or 8 on today's hardware?

From my findings, these issues still exist:

The activity widget still doesn’t update in a timely fashion,
The wash hands 20 second completion sound still hit and miss (watchOS obviously),
Stutter

More to come I’m sure.

It absolutely can take 3 days, or even longer.

The term “indexing” is misleading though as many assume that’s just spotlight indexing your files. However, keep in mind that many of us use iCloud Photo Library and even keep Messages in the cloud.

With that said, after a restore, your phone has to download your entire photo library (if you set for download original) and often times your phone rescans for faces after this.

All of this is not only very processor heavy but is constantly using WiFi or cellular to connect which can cause major battery drain for the first few days.

Still having the stutter when swiping up in an app to go back to the home screen on my iPhone 12 Pro Max

How and why is this still a thing?
why? because Apple doesn't care, fixing the stutter isn't going to make them more money.

Interesting article. Depending on the scope, I can see a .1 jump.

There is no indexing after the update has finished. Every OS is indexing during the update process, otherwise you would not have a stable system to work with.

The only "indexing" is done for the fotos app, but that happens only when connected to a wall charger and when the phone is locked. And this only for new pictures.

This false information about indexing came up long ago when Apple messed up an update and things worked slower than before. People looked for excuses that their expensive device isn't as good as before and found something to adapt to the new experience. After a couple of days they got used to the slower system and did not care, and this made them believe there is indexing, while in fact they just got used to it.

Sorry but that’s a silly thing to say
Apple make lots of fixes to iOS that isn’t going to make them money either. Apples whole ethos is to have smooth running software & hardware, that makes them money in the long run simply by “just working”
So it’s either they can’t fix it, or don’t think it’s an issue at all
Both of which are unacceptable

That’s not really the case, I would say. The last almost flawless macOS was Snow Leopard. It worked perfectly.

Nowadays, Apple is all about adding features while breaking other things.

The most important fact is that Apple has to satisfy their shareholders. That’s their first priority and customer‘s satisfaction is second.

I'm having problems with ios 14.4 iPhone 11 Pro Max when I forward calls to be made using macos big sur 11.1. Sometimes it transfers to the mac, sometimes it doesn't.

I have to say that the last few years, in my experience, the old adage regarding Apple of “it just works” certainly doesn’t apply anymore. This is across-the-board with my equipment: phone, iPad, watch, Apple TV, HomePod, and don’t get me started on Siri.

Sorry, I’ve gone off track there. Back OT.
