It got a lot of time during the keynote, so I wouldn’t consider it a “little thing”, but I haven’t seen much about it here on the threads...the Translate app. It actually helped me out with a patient at work last week!

Hopefully they are working on adding more languages. My wife’s first language is Hebrew...and I work with a few people who are fluent in Polish. Being able to translate between English and those two languages isn’t a necessity for me because my wife doesn’t speak in Hebrew outside of religious stuff, and the Polish people I work with speak English 98% of the time at work. For me, those two languages would fit into the “cool to have” category, but I imagine it would be a big help to other people. (Especially when you consider that Google Translate has both)

The Translate app just runs functionality that's already there, I believe.

I have shortcuts that translate what I say into German and one from German back into English. I use it as a learning aid. The advantage of the Translate app is one doesn't need to create a load of shortcuts, and I don't know why the app wasn't available earlier!

On iPadOS 14 safari, whe. You long press a link you can “open in background tab”. Not sure if new or I missed this previously.

Has this always been there? It actually shows what is playing on my Apple TV’s when I select audio options from my phone??

Never noticed it before...

Seriously need a mail widget and call favourites widget again and the ability to pick the album shown on photos widget but other wise it's a fantastic update.

I can't wait to see what Spotify, WhatsApp and others do with the widgets.

Yup, it has.

I suspect that the ones Apple had previously, that disappeared, will come back in the new style by release.

I can almost replicate the missing Favourites widget by creating shortcuts to facetime video / facetime audio / iMessage my contacts and putting them in one of the new folders that shortcuts allows now. However, you can only fit four shortcuts in a widget that takes up the space for 8 icons. Crazy.

I didn’t realise until I installed the beta (public), the in safari translation function doesn’t work outside of the US. This is pretty disappointing.
Also, I wonder if anyone else is experiencing this issue; on my iPhone, (8plus) Siri is still the original full screen Siri. The new Siri works fine on my iPad Pro.

With the translate, it does say on Apple’s iOS 14 page, it says US, Canada and other countries only(see screenshot), which isn’t a surprise whilst in Beta.

As for Siri being full screen, make sure this setting is turned off. (See other screenshot).

Ah thanks, I had always liked ‘normal’ Siri with hey siri, amd type to Siri by pressing the home button. But thanks. That fixed it.

as for the translate, yes I realised afterwards. Still very disappointing though as it wasn’t made very clear. The weather app differences, for example, were quite clearly announced.

I’m sure it will come - just hadn’t realised it wasn’t there form the start (in the uk here, so no real reason to not include it especially as the translate app is present and working well).

Does Memoji have new haircuts? Looking to see if they've added undercuts or anything similar

seven new hairstyles which include man bun, top knot, and simple side part, is what’s going around on the news sites. I’m not sure what the other 4 are, as I haven’t got anything to compare to (As no devices handy on iOS 13).

Not sure if it’s been mentioned yet... I seem to be able to listen to websites like YouTube in the background (at least on iPadOS 14). Not a tab, a whole backgrounded Safari window. This works using any other app and also on the home screen. I’m pretty sure this was not possible previously.

The Home app now alerts you to updates in HomeKit enable apps. I got notified that the maker of my smart plugs had an available update and then it took me to the update page.

Hmm I'll have to give that a try. Hadn't even thought about doing that, since I usually just use the YouTube app (and don't usually have the need to use background audio from it, so it's not even something I normally think about).

Discovered it by accident whilst checking out the improved PiP features.

Adding an app to a home screen

Is there an easy way to add an app to a home screen? As i work to find the setup i want, i am doing this frequently. No doubt it will decrease as i find the setup i like, but would still be nice at times. Right now I activate pages and find the app i want and move it to one i intend to keep active.

There is a setting in settings to download the app to the home screen rather than the app drawer, if that’s what you mean.
Or if you mean out on Home Screen after you already put it in the app drawer, then locate it in the app drawer and long press. You’ll get a option. Or you long press and drag out. I forget which. If you mean anything else then you can just move the app in the traditional way when wiggling.

*edit- actually you can drag out of the app draw for sure. Long pressing offers the option on some app, but not on others.

Thanks! I did mean the 2nd part, i knew about the setting and that is another reason i wanted an easier way to get apps to a home screen from the drawer. I had long pressed on at least one and had only delete and share as options. I had also tried to start the "wiggling" from the app drawer and that did not work.

Your method does, and i should have guessed at that too. Swiping to the app drawer once in edit mode allows the app to be dragged to a screen. I do like this new setup, but a UI that had me guessing is a tad annoying.

Thanks for the help.

i just tested it, and you actually don’t need to start the wiggling and then swipe to the app drawer.
You can press, hold and drag left the app in the draw and it will pull out and automatically start the wiggling on the home screen.

Yep, it works pretty well. A few times I've had to redo it but so far so good.

🔥 Pressing Command-B in universal search opens your query directly as a new search tab in Safari 🔥

Been waiting for this Mac feature to make its way across for a long time. Finally, quick Google searching from any app :)
