That's the problem. Apple doesn't seem to be able to update their apps individually; they have to send out an entire new OS each time they want to add something to e.g. Mail, Safari, Maps.

Yeah, I find that weird since some of them can be removed and re downloaded via the app store; and they can do a LOT server side, like they just did with Apple Music..

Still, the mere fact that Facetime is now more like Zoom, Maps is more like G-Earth, the camera and photos is now more like Google Lens.... seems underwhelming anyway you cut it lol

The more interesting stuff is in the Accessibility software they announced weeks ago and I expected it to make it into the keynote but, nope.

Apple has to skirt the line between innovation and reliability - the iPhone and iOS is a mature product now and people expect a certain level of polish from the apple ecosystem, even if that means you miss a "bleeding-edge" feature.

Yes so niche that the entire world switched to group video chatting as the main form of communication last year
The group listening stuff is VERY niche and feels targeted toward kids. And without getting into a society rant, maybe that is what is wrong with society (and part of stuff like school shootings, online bullying, etc) instead of actual human interaction watching TV or listening to music "like the old days" not even 10-15 years ago. You know put down the device.

I can't figure out why I would want to see someone and try to watch a show at the same time either. Or why I care to see their face while watching it.

But to be a tentpole feature of the presentation was really weird.

Didn't he use to work for MR or some Apple site? Or do articles or vids for one?

Regardless, he's more an Apple fanboy/user than not. And just because someone doesn't like something doesn't make them a "hater" of all. It's a clickbaity title, sure. But the premise he makes isn't wrong either and a lot of people (who are hardcore Apple fans) are saying similar stuff about iPad and its confusing right now.

Not to you personally, but that is becoming such a MR thing- "you are with us or against us" nonsense that you can't have an opinion on one thing (or like one product) and opposite on another.

M1, 16gb RAM, 1tb ssd, Thunderbolt 4 - and that lets me move widgets around multiple screens or use the same old clunky multi-tasking except now I can find it easier at the top of the screen because the gestures sucked so bad? This is not only a disappointment, it is an insult to those of us who dropped $1699-$1999 on the 11/12.9 for no good reason. Not a SINGLE feature or app aimed at the M1 processor. Thank goodness Apple has already accepted my return...and I'm sure many more will follow (not to mention cancellation of orders out there lingering through July)...

Also, a bunch of features are still region-dependent, like the new Maps interface or the Wallet benefits and the rest are aimed for the newer products, like all the audio features and the connectivity stuff for the ecosystem with the Mac; iPad OS 15 on my "super old" 9.7 Pro it's just messy and slow (yeah, beta 1 but on newer ipads it runs ok).

If you need a Mac, buy a Mac, don't buy an iPad and expect it to be a Mac.
I own a Mac. I’m buying an iPad for versatility. It’s held back by limitations.

I am not expecting it to be a “Mac”. I’m expecting it to be “iPadOS” with more capability. What you want is to hold back iPad’s potential even though you can still continue to use it as a entertainment device even after it becomes a powerful software.

let’s not limit it to one use case. I’m really asking for is quality of life improvements anyway: Apple has already begun the slow and egregious process of making the iPad into a pro device. Pencil, keyboard, trackpad, context menus, file management, large RAM, thunderbolt, marketing the processor as a Mac processor, etc. it’s all there. Your argument is moot

There is the issue. It is likely intentionally being held back. The iPad hardware is MORE than capable; especially this year.

But if it can do what a Mac can for 98-99% of people (and pro apps) then most people would not buy both a Mac and iPad; Apple's ecosystem strategy.

It is in their best interest to make it iOS plus a bit and get people to buy both devices.

Not a single feature that the casual user will be hyped about. All this FaceTime and group sharing is so niche, weird they spent so much time on it
I'm not the type to always complain about new changes the way a lot of Redditors and I guess MR users do, but...

Between Big Sur having some very questionable UX choices and now iOS 15 looking to be surprisingly underwhelming for a X.0 refresh...

Yeah, I'm somewhat bummed too. Totally agree.

Agree 100%

iOS 15 …Apple releasing a new OS because it’s just what they do every year (even if it is underwhelming). Most of what they announced could have been done with updates in 14. Not excited at all after yesterday’s announcement, but seems I’m not alone

waiting for the “blame it on covid” excuse in 3-2-1…..

I think we’re just hitting the law of diminishing returns at this point. They can only do so much.
A springboard update would have been nice, I'm still waiting for them to add the ability to place icons where I want them and not block the wallpaper when I'm using my phone.. I know App Library is an option but still.. it would have been nice.

I have a **** memory... Back in the early iOS and Mac OS X days, did they also do yearly releases? Or did they take more time on them back then?

Buh buh buh COVID

Ohhhh wait...... Somehow Google managed to overhaul its OS visually, widgets, notifications, etc. Actual function and (big) appearance updates during COVID.

It's not COVID, it's Apple saying they think the OS doesn't need improving in typical Apple fashion; until it does and their mind changes again and backtrack. Very Apple-like.

But hey, those memoji outfits were worth a team's time on

waiting for the general “just get Android and leave” ignorance for pointing out simple facts as they exist in 3-2-1…..

I actually feel sorry for Google. They go to all the trouble of redesigning the OS, and the majority of android OEMs are just going to layer their own skins over it anyways.

I’m going to bend over for Tim just this once and say,

Maybe. Just maybe, iPadOS 16 will get the powerful OS we’ve been begging for.

In April, we saw Tim Cook steal the M1 chip from the MacBook Air. That was only two months ago from WWDC. For Apple to implement FCP, LGIC, Xcode, and all the other powerful features, that would be an unrealistic timeframe, they were too focused on the Mac. They didn’t plan this in advance, obviously, since M1 came out in November. That has to be it.

Now with all these expectations Apple noticed prior to WWDC about the upcoming iPadOS being a powerhouse and users expecting pro apps, maybe they can finally shift over their priorities to the iPad this year for iPadOS 16 now that the hardware is now capable, and give us what we’ve been complaining for.

Because Apple likes to prioritize controversy.

Last year I can´t wait to get public betas, but this year? Boring.
The only thing I really like is the button to get directly to the app library. But I want it on IOS.
The then too long way to app library is the reason why I don´t build up a second or third homescreen with widgets.

To see what what's new and at the same time hear (rumor) a possible lockscreen update was delayed is disappointing. Something major like that would have made this collection of meh more impressive.

Gee it took 10 minutes longer to get this subject started than it did last year and the year before and the year before.....

What I really like here: People complain but don't give a smart, doable (transform iPad OS in 1 year in a macOS light f.e. is not doable) solution, what they want. Just bashing iOS 15. Do I need all features? No. But I like them. And I get them for free with my devices. Does Windows have a yearly upgrade cycle with this amout of features? I guess no. Does any other company grant those upgrades to 5 year old devices? I also doubt it... so: I take it for free and use what I can use in my daily work.
Considering one dude made the remote app years ago and now it’s part of control center. I’m pretty sure apple could do that with calculator on iPad. Same goes for weather app. They did a full redesign on iPhone. Sooooo one or two guys couldnt adapt it for iPad????? Gimme a damn break.

How about actually proper external display support???

None of those are a giant ask and something that doesn’t require some massive undertaking compared to the stuff they announce. They brought voice memos to iPad like it was the second coming last year. I’ve used it once…..ONCE. I check the weather multiple times per day and cringe when I need to do some quick math on iPad and have to go get my phone. Speaking of the damn watch has a calculator…….THE WATCH!
