They did carry over what was already setup for DND, either. I had to go through and select those notifications I had defined previously after the update. Didn't know this until notifications began coming through after I had gone to bed. Very frustrating!
Tell me about it. For years I have used DnD on a time schedule to silence the phone at night. Today it woke me up in the middle of the night when some emails arrived, because iOS 15 did't carry over the DnD schedule. Then I had trouble finding where in the settings the feature now is, all at 2am and barely awake. I also find the "focus" settings overloaded and pretty confusing.

I’m not sure what the purpose of Do Not Disturb is now, aside from if you’re in a meeting and want to block any alerts?

Either way, the moon symbol needs to be changed as the sleep focus mode appears to have taken over its role now.

You will find all your notifications in notIfication center if you learn to use focus.
We want banner notifications while the screen is on. But we don't want the screen to light up if it's already off. I'm not seeing how to do this with focus modes. (What I have done now is gone through and turned off lock screen notifications on individual apps, but this is not ideal and has nothing to do with focus modes.)

For one thing, DnD seems to be the only "focus" option that can automatically activate on a time schedule (e.g. during the night hours). For meetings I find the mute switch much easier than fiddling around in the settings.

I could never get notifications to stop showing up while on the device in DND. What was the magical thing except for actually disabling notifications?
In iOS14 you had the option to silence Always / While iPhone is locked, as shown in the image in the article.

While useful for some I was always annoyed at being in DND and using the device and still getting notifications. I wanted it all to be in the background.
Didn’t the “only when locked” switch worked for your usage scenario?

Apple giveth, Apple taketh.
The ways of Apple are mysterious, but good for you in the end.
Apple should tell in every update not only the “new” features, but also what features they removed!. Like the Up-next widget in ios14 (now I can’t know when is my wake alarm until I remember to open the app, etc.), so we can make an educated decision instead of blindly jumping into a “improved” IOS version.

This always wound me right up. I want to get notifications on screen if the device is in use, but compleatly silently, including no vibrate. But the only way to disable vibration was to turn off vibrate on silent compleatly, meaning I got no alerts at all in standard silent mode. Does the new setting allow me to get vibrations on silent, but no audible notifications at all in DND, even the device is in use?

i used to use the night mode, but it's a bit of a hassle when i do want to look at my notifications, so i went back to using the good 'ol 'do not disturb'.
Yes, it is a hassle. I just found that it was more peaceful to set a schedule to go into bedtime mode 10 minutes after i normally go to bed and go off when I normally get....during the work from home days. Now that I go in randomly and get up much earlier on those days I will turn it off via the watch.

Not the only thing they got rid of…Siri’s volume is no longer adjustable in Maps while playing media (podcasts, music, etc.). Its only setting is LOUDLY overriding the media while giving a direction. Discovered this rather unpleasantly on a ride with my brother this morning. His phone is still on iOS 14 and we ended up just using his for directions. Really genuinely disappointing regression.

Something that annoys me is there’s no way at the moment to mute the iPhone. With shortcuts I can mute and unmute my watch when I arrive and then leave at work but not my phone, I get you can turn volume to 0% but that’s not the same

I have notification sounds turned off for essentially everything, this is still annoying to hear. I went through the process of setting up all the focus modes and deleting them so I’m left with just DND ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Apple is turning easy things into a complicated and useless mess!. Turning little by little into a Microsoft. Or had the home office some effect in this year’s version?.
We will have to wait one more year to *maybe* get back what we lost in the “update” to ios15. Beta testers did not warn about this change, at least to be aware that it was missing from beta versions and could be in the final release. Shame on Tim for not using his products only saying “we are so excited” every
year and “the best processor on a smartphone ever”, same tired speech and zero innovation.
I am seriously thinking on jailbreaking when it becomes possible, that community has 1000 better ideas and realizes them.

make your voice heard.
Got tired of that link. Apple is like a corrupt politician and only pays attention when there is enough media noise. Like the CSAM affair or the antenna gate or the bend-gate or the tab bar in Safari 15 and several other cases.

Just another example of “we know better and you customers are all dumb^&%” mindset. I don’t know why dev in Apple loves to remove those small features that doesn’t matter much to architecture or security or whatever. iOS 14 also removes the dialer feature when selecting time for no apparent reason.

To be fair, I don’t think previous DND is sophisticated enough to suite better needs, but what they are doing now isn’t a clear improvement either, being me unable to receive random but urgent calls for no apparent reason. It doesn’t make sense for me to add those numbers as contacts only to contact them once or twice.

Oh, also they remove the volume limit feature in music app which does a way better job than whatever current solution is. Frustrating.
